Jermaine Dupri shares his pride and excitement to watch Usher receive a lifetime achievement award tonight at the BET Awards. He also explains to THR how he continues to develop hits.

00:00Hi, Jermaine.
00:01What's up?
00:01So, Usher is being honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award,
00:05and you work very closely with him.
00:07Yeah.
00:08So what does that mean for you as being his longtime producer?
00:11You say what now?
00:11What does that mean to you that he's being honored as his longtime producer?
00:16I mean, it's like a dream come true of something that, you know,
00:19being a guy that was sitting there from the beginning
00:22and having these conversations with him every night in the studio
00:25and saying, you know, I hope we make records that get us to this point,
00:29and I hope we become the artists that people talk about and do this with.
00:36All of those things, we had these conversations.
00:39So to be here and to see it happening, I couldn't miss it,
00:44and I'm excited about it.
00:45I'm excited for him for this.
00:47And you have worked with other great artists like Escape,
00:50and I feel like you keep your ear to the streets.
00:53You have a very good ear for music.
00:55So when it comes to maintaining relevancy as far as the modern sound,
00:59how do you integrate, like, the skills that you've developed over the years?
01:03You don't pay attention to the – once you're the algorithm, you're the algorithm.
01:07That's what it is.
01:08I just – I view myself as the algorithm.
01:10I don't really view myself as a time place or whatever time space.
01:14What I did for Usher, I could do for somebody else,
01:17and what I did for somebody else, I could do for that person.
01:19So I just – when you've got that belief, it's just what it is.
01:22And I know you're from the South, you're from Atlanta,
01:24but when you hear they not like us, what does that mean to you?
01:28It means a lot because I'm from the South,
01:30but they not like us from the South.
01:32So it means a lot of different things.
01:34But, yeah, it's a lot of things that we move,
01:37a lot of ways that we move and a lot of things we go by in the South
01:40that resonates with me.
