Brian Tyree Henry spoke with The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet of the 'Bullet Train' movie premiere. The 'Atlanta' star talked about his chemistry with co-star Aaron Taylor-Johnson, the most badass moment in 'Bullet Train', and his upcoming movie with Jennifer Lawrence.
Transcript
00:00You and Aaron Taylor-Johnson worked very close together on this movie.
00:04How did you form your on-screen bond?
00:06You know, it's kind of crazy.
00:07I've been a fan of Aaron's for quite a while,
00:09and when I saw that he was playing my other half, I was very excited.
00:13But I was also very nervous because I was like,
00:15you know, we're supposed to be identical twins, which we clearly are.
00:18And so, you know, David did a chemistry read very early on,
00:22and he made this fake train car where we sat across from each other
00:25and we put our scripts down, and we just went off.
00:28Like, we just started, like, just ripping and having a good time
00:31that we forgot our script.
00:32Like, we just, like, tossed it to the side.
00:34And it was really fun.
00:35And what was really great about it is that we wanted people to feel
00:38like these were true brothers.
00:40Like, we wanted there to be heart to them.
00:42We wanted you guys to care if they made it or not.
00:44And a lot of that came from our true relationship, Aaron and I.
00:47I mean, I have a brother in this guy.
00:49Like, he's my emergency contact.
00:51Like, he has my passcodes and my garage door opener.
00:54Like, he knows the secrets.
00:56He knows where the bodies are.
00:57So, once you meet somebody like that, they're in your life forever.
01:01That's amazing.
01:02I love that.
01:03And this is a crazy movie, definitely a badass movie.
01:05What would you say is the most badass moment in this movie?
01:09Oh, man.
01:10Can I be honest with you?
01:11So, a hero who plays the elder has a cane and a wind machine
01:16that's on him at all times.
01:17And I'm telling you, when you see this man come down this aisle
01:20with that cane and that wind machine, you know it's business.
01:24And it's just, it was unbelievable.
01:26That was something that I signed on for.
01:27I remember asking David, I was like, do I get a slow motion walk?
01:30Like, do I get one?
01:31He was like, oh, let's see.
01:32And I got one.
01:33And I was like, dreams fulfilled.
01:35Dreams fulfilled.
01:36How much of your own stunts did you get to do on this movie?
01:38Most, most, until I got hurt.
01:40But then I even still did my own.
01:43What happened?
01:43How'd you get hurt?
01:44You know, I got very overzealous and was like, oh, I know how to jump up in the air
01:49and kick somebody in the chest with both of my feet off the ground.
01:53And I tried it a few takes.
01:55And then a machine gun kind of ran into my leg.
01:57And I couldn't open my leg again.
01:59And I was like, we got it, right?
02:00Okay, let's do another.
02:01David was like, sit down.
02:02Just take a break.
02:03But it's David Leach, you know what I mean?
02:05Like, when you get an opportunity to do a David Leach movie with David Leach choreography
02:08and David Leach stunts, you want to do it.
02:11And I did.
02:12And I had to sit down, too.
02:14So I'd do it again, though.
02:16I really would.
02:17Coming up next for you, you just had a movie get into the Toronto Film Festival, right?
02:20You worked on it with Jennifer Lawrence.
02:22What can you tell us about that?
02:23You know, it's a movie called Causeway, directed by this up-and-coming director named Lila Neuberger,
02:27who's amazing.
02:28We went to Yale together, actually.
02:30So I've known her for years.
02:32And this is one of her first features.
02:33And I chomped at the bit to work with her, but also with Jennifer Lawrence.
02:37I mean, I've been a huge fan of hers for a long time, as well.
02:40And it's just a story about these two people who are navigating trauma in New Orleans
02:44and finding an unlikely friendship in each other.
02:47And it's really heavy, but it's also heartwarming.
02:50And it's beautiful, and I'm really glad that it's there.
02:52I can't wait to premiere it.
02:53We're excited to see it and excited to see the movie tonight.
02:55Thank you so much.
02:56I really appreciate it.
