Newcastle United Head Coach Eddie Howe publicly backed goalkeeper Nick Pope following the Magpies’ 2-1 loss away at Marseille in the Champions League, despite Pope being at fault for Marseille’s equaliser early in the second half, whilst Middlesbrough Assistant Manager Adi Viveash took positives from Boro’s 2-4 home loss to Championship leaders Coventry City.
00:00Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe has publicly backed Nick Pope following a mistake from the goalkeeper
00:06that ultimately led to Marseille's equaliser in Newcastle United's 2-1 defeat on the French South Coast in the Champions League.
00:15Newcastle were leading 1-0 at half-time before Pope tried to clear the ball, was rounded by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for Marseille to equalise.
00:24Well, I think a concern when we concede goals, regardless of who's at fault, I think we have to look at everything with a balanced head.
00:31Nick saved us many times, he made some really good saves against Manchester City just two days ago, that's the life of a goalkeeper.
00:37But I certainly back him.
00:39That's a big disappointment today because we'd played so well in the first half, you know, we'd done everything, not everything right, but the majority of things right.
00:46I think we'd been a threat, we'd been athletically really good, it was a much improved performance in the Brentford game.
00:51And for me, the performance today was strong.
00:56You know, I thought we did carry a goal threat, which at times, away from home this year, we haven't.
01:00You know, I think we had 20 shots in the end and so I was pleased with a lot of the performance.
01:04Of course, the two goals, the manner of the goals, disappointing.
01:07Yes, chucking away a lead again, very disappointing.
01:10Losing away from home, very disappointing, but I thought they were positive signs.
01:13And Middlesbrough assistant manager Adie Vyvash has said that there were positives to take from Borough's 4-2 loss against Coventry City at the Riverside Stadium.
01:24I thought it was a high-quality championship game.
01:29I think, you know, you saw why they are what they are.
01:32You know, that we felt we really, really played really well at a lot of periods of the game.
01:39Started the game well, but then conceded a couple of goals that, you know, we're obviously disappointed with all the goals,
01:45but a couple of goals that we should do better with, I think.
01:49And that was a bit of a kick in the teeth because we had started really well.
01:54We had a couple of opportunities.
01:55They defended really well when Morgan got in once, clearance off the line.
02:01And then, you know, we managed to get one back and sort of then really had a purple patch again for 15 minutes,
02:07really dominated that last bit of the first half.
02:10The message at half-time was just about keep switching it, keep getting it wide.
