Apple has landed 'Emancipation,' the action film that will star Will Smith and is set to be directed by Antoine Fuqua.

00:00After a heated bidding war, Apple has landed Antoine Fuqua's Emancipation, starring Will Smith.

00:06Many major studios were vying for the film, with Warner Bros. and Apple being the final two bidders,

00:11but Apple ended up taking on the project for a massive price tag.

00:15Based on the true story, the movie starring Smith follows Peter, a runaway slave who joined the Union Army

00:20and was the subject of the published photo known as the Scourged Back,

00:24which shows Peter's scars from the near-fatal whipping on a plantation

00:27and became indisputable proof of the cruelty and barbarity of slavery in America.

00:32Smith through Westbrook Studios will be producing the feature, which was written by William N. Collage.

00:37Fuqua will executive produce under his Fuqua Films banner alongside Cliff Roberts.

00:41The acquisition comes as Apple has made several large buys,

00:44including Tom Hanks' World War II movie Greyhound from Sony and Sofia Coppola's On the Rocks, among others.
