00:00Hey guys, welcome to Billboard's Rock the Look.
00:03I'm Neha Joy, here with beauty expert Aditya Madiraju.
00:06Okay, tell us, what iconic look are we recreating today?
00:10When you say iconic, the only person that comes to my mind is Rekha.
00:13Now, Rekha is the 60s, 70s, 80s actress.
00:16She can act, she can sing, she can dance, she can emote.
00:19She's a diva, she's a princess, she's a queen.
00:20But she had a very specific look, like a matte face,
00:24with a smoky eye, but with a white or a cream eyeliner.
00:28And I think back in the day, nobody did that.
00:30And that is so camp, and I think the world needs to know.
00:35So let's talk about why you wanted to choose this look in particular.
00:40I think this look in particular, it's like a matte face with a smoky eye,
00:45but you see the white liner.
00:47And I think this is so relevant even today,
00:50because you see this on TikTok all the time.
00:52I feel like she started this iconic makeup trend.
00:55Absolutely. How would you describe this?
00:56I would say like blurred porcelain skin with beautifully defined eyebrows,
01:01but not overdone.
01:02Okay.
01:03Very smoky eye, which is balanced out with a glossy lip.
01:06So glossy, matte, smoky, overall clear complexion.
01:11Yeah.
01:11Like, I think Rekha is everyone's dream girl.
01:14Yeah.
01:15Even today, she's 72, I think.
01:17And yeah, she recently, like two years ago, did a shoot with Vogue Arabia.
01:21Yes.
01:22If I didn't know who she was, I would think she's an empress of some era.
01:26Like, yeah.
01:27Also, I didn't realize how recent.
01:29How recent that is.
01:30That she was.
01:31She looks exactly the same.
01:33Whatever skincare she has, that's what we need.
01:35That's what we want.
01:36We want Rekha's skincare.
01:37I know.
01:37So the eyebrow for me is a very defining feature on your face.
01:42Depending on how dark you go, how much you fill in, how much you hold back,
01:47it's going to define the rest of your makeup.
01:48Okay.
01:49So what did we do on the brows here?
01:52I'm using Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Pen.
01:55I filled it in with two different colors.
01:57I'm combing and diffusing the harsh lines as I'm going.
02:00And I'm trying to create a gradient where it's a little lighter and goes a bit darker
02:04as we hit the tail end.
02:05But at the same time, I am trying to hold back and not fill it completely,
02:09so that we are a little bit closer to the reference image that we have.
02:12So how long have you been doing makeup?
02:15I think my journey with makeup started when I was a kid.
02:20I always say that I came out and then I came out with my makeup.
02:24So I think all these years of hiding who I am growing up, especially in India,
02:29where at that point it was not okay to be gay.
02:31I think it was, I needed an outlet and I think painting, makeup, anything creative,
02:36art with color became my outlet.
02:39So I've always loved makeup and my family is like always surprised.
02:42They're like, where did you even start with this?
02:43I'm like, I have no idea.
02:45But thank you God, because this is the only thing I know how to do and I enjoy doing it.
02:49So yeah, I think it's childhood love affair.
02:52That's what it is.
02:53Yeah.
02:54So we're going to head into skincare.
02:55I'm using two different things on you.
02:57I'm using a serum.
02:58I'm using a thick, thick moisturizer because I'm actually going to do your eyes next.
03:02So while the eyes do that, I'm going to marinate your skin in this.
03:05This is Augustine Spatter, the rich cream, one of my most favorite.
03:10He also created a bunch of things with Victoria Beckham and he's coming out with a line with Dua Lipa.
03:15Oh, no way.
03:16That's tea.
03:17Are there dupes for something like this?
03:19Like a good moisturizer, drugstore moisturizer that you think would work for something like this?
03:23L'Oreal.
03:24L'Oreal Revital Lift.
03:25I absolutely love it.
03:27It is light.
03:29It is thick.
03:30It has hyaluronic acid, which is great for oily skin, dry skin, any skin.
03:34Are there any like standout red carpet looks that you loved in terms of beauty?
03:39Oh, yeah, absolutely.
03:40Like Doja Cat.
03:42Oh, yeah.
03:43She slays.
03:44Like she is so good with her makeup.
03:46Like she gives it her all.
03:48I love the fact that these pop singers and artists who actually like are established singers don't shy away from the beauty aspect of it.
03:56Like Selena Gomez, like her whole rare beauty line, the way she does her face is like the soft girl.
04:02Similarly, there is like so many, right?
04:04Dua Lipa now.
04:05Like she has a very specific look.
04:06Her makeup artist is a good friend.
04:08And you can see how like that inspired Dua's look quite a bit, right?
04:13Yeah.
04:13So it's like I love the fact that the singers are finding their rhythm even in makeup.
04:18Yeah.
04:19I am locking in her eyelids with a little bit of powder before I hit it with the powder eyeshadow.
04:24I love this new Patrick Ta eye palette.
04:27Have you seen this?
04:28No.
04:29This is the new one and this is medium.
04:31Okay.
04:32This is beauty.
04:34It's brand new.
04:35And you know, you're going home with this after this.
04:37This is yours.
04:38You guys, I feel like I just won a contest.
04:41If you're brown skin, this is the kind of palette you need.
04:45We are doing the smoke show.
04:48And the thing with eyeshadows is less is more.
04:50So you have to build it up very, very gradually.
04:54And if you're a beginner, always remember hold the brush really, really far away.
04:57Less pressure, less stress on the eye.
04:59You have to be super gentle.
05:01Your client has to fall asleep.
05:03So I'm going to dip into this palette a little stronger now because I want to bring in the
05:08cool tone looks.
05:09This is Natasha Denona Eye Sculpt Texture Tone palette.
05:12You see how this shade, this shade is a bit more cool tone.
05:15Yeah.
05:16This is more neutral.
05:17These are warm.
05:18So it's a good match.
05:19So I think I'm going to use this to really tight line near the lash line.
05:22Yeah.
05:23To bring in that grayness.
05:24There's like overall warmth in the face.
05:26Okay.
05:27So you do mix like cool tones and warm tones.
05:29Yeah, absolutely.
05:30That's our body too, right?
05:31Like, that's just naturally how nature works.
05:34Yeah.
05:35Like there are no rules in terms of sticking to one versus the other.
05:38There's no rules, but there's technique.
05:40As long as you know the technique, break the rules.
05:43And you can see how there is depth here, depth here.
05:46There's a bit of a shade here.
05:47And I'm building it out into a smokey eye.
05:50I'm going to go in with Makeup by Mario's Master Pigment Pro in the shade is Perfect Brown.
05:55So this is how we add the smoke.
05:57I take it on a clean canvas or on the back of the hand.
06:00I use my back of the hand for everything.
06:02So by then you'll see how crazy my hand looks.
06:04The crazier your hand looks, the better your makeup is.
06:06That's my theory.
06:07And this is brown, not black.
06:09This is the perfect brown, not just any brown.
06:12So I'm going to take it on this brush.
06:14And this is how we're going to create that smoke that she has.
06:17But not that intense.
06:18Okay.
06:19Because this is Neha, that's Rekha we've got to modify.
06:22It's all about adding the depth at the right places.
06:25And let the smoke like look natural on your eye rather than forced.
06:31Adding a little bit of black as well to intensify it.
06:36Before I do the lashes, I'm going to tight line your eye.
06:39These are velour under lashes, different brands make it.
06:44But they go under because they have stickiness right on the top here.
06:47So they stick under.
06:48I used to struggle with the regular lashes because it's hard to get them to sit.
06:53These are so easy.
06:54This is the 80% done eye look.
07:03So her face is completely primed right now.
07:05I use one size secure the blur.
07:07Anything that smooths the face, fills in the pores, what pores?
07:10But you know, it creates a beautiful canvas for foundation.
07:13This is really, really good.
07:15So talk to me a little bit about how we found my shade or the shade matching for this.
07:20We prayed to the gods of foundation.
07:22Yes.
07:23No, actually.
07:24That's number one.
07:25Yeah.
07:26No, I took Laura Mercier, which is actually your foundation, which is beautiful.
07:28I love this one, right?
07:29Then I went in with one of my most favorite palettes from Make Up Forever, HD Skin Palette.
07:34And I mixed them together to create the perfect base.
07:37It's so hard.
07:38I'm always mixing and matching.
07:39I know people do that a lot.
07:41But it's tough to find one depending on your undertone and skin tone in general.
07:48How do you feel about inclusivity and diversity in the beauty space now as compared to before?
07:53Oh, it's much better because we have been so loud.
07:56I mean, in the creator community at least, we have all been so loud.
07:59The fact that we are missing it and we need it that brands are finally listening.
08:03Like, it's time.
08:04Like, it's time we got the right shades with the right undertone because we are the consumers
08:08and we're ready to buy.
08:09And like, but why are you not selling it to us?
08:11You know?
08:12The whole conversation got really deep, especially during COVID, if you remember.
08:15And here we are.
08:17Today we have shades.
08:18It feels like it comes so naturally to you to be able to know what works for someone else's face.
08:25And you talked about a little bit how beauty was always something that you loved.
08:29Was there a specific moment or experience or maybe it was watching something of Rekha's
08:34or maybe another Bollywood actress, your own mom.
08:37Like, what was the kind of inspiration for getting into beauty?
08:40See, that's such a deep question because whenever I think of like what really inspired me,
08:46it all comes down to the fact that I was told that I as a man cannot wear makeup.
08:53I should not get into this.
08:55And I was a rebellious kid.
08:56So when someone tells you don't do it, you definitely want to do it, right?
09:00Yeah.
09:01But then for a very long time, I thought that's why I did the dancing or I did beauty
09:05because people said don't do it.
09:07But it was much later that I realized that I think in my 30s, to be honest, that I genuinely actually love it.
09:13So talk a little bit about color correction when it comes to under eyes.
09:16Yeah, no, absolutely.
09:17I use a lot of color correctors.
09:19They are really good drugstore color correctors like e.l.f.
09:21This is what I usually like to do.
09:23Once the color corrector dries down a bit, I take a little bit of powder.
09:26And you can see I'm taking like a peach powder because it's close to the color corrector's color.
09:30And I'm going to just press on it so the color corrector is mattified and it doesn't mix with the concealer.
09:35That's what happens when you add too much color corrector.
09:38The concealer mixes and everything turns orange.
09:40And then people are like, why is my makeup looking orange?
09:43This is one of my most favorite things that I use.
09:45It's Makeup by Mario's Soft Sculpt Skin Enhancer.
09:48So it looks super dark here, but it sheers out beautifully on the hand and just adds the right amount of depth.
09:55It's like somewhere between a bronzer and a foundation.
09:57You're just going to lift up those cheekbones, add the shadow in there, get it to sit beautifully on your face and we're done.
10:05This is a blush and a bronzer mix.
10:08It's Trumpton SM Irix and the beauty is that it looks like this.
10:11So what do you think this is?
10:13It could be anything that you want.
10:14Yeah, I would say it's more of like a bronzer contour, right?
10:17But this is technically a blush.
10:18Yeah.
10:19So I'm just going to use it as a blush and just add a bit color here.
10:24Also, you want to make sure there's a smooth flow of color from your concealer to your blush to your bronzer.
10:30And it kind of helps when you use a deeper blush like this because you're lifting the face and there is less separation between the concealer and the bronzer.
10:37Powder bronzer, this is Armani.
10:39We love a beautiful satin finish.
10:42So when did you start first wearing makeup?
10:45That's such a funny question because I don't remember.
10:48But the truth is that I think when I started making money because I didn't have to justify to anyone that why am I buying a mascara?
10:56Yeah.
10:57Like why does a guy need a mascara?
10:58So I think I would say when I moved to US in 2010.
11:02Oh wow.
11:03Yeah, I was working off campus.
11:05And you know, you make some money when you work off campus.
11:08And I was like, yeah, finally, I can do what I want to do.
11:11And I think the first thing that I bought was a mascara.
11:13That's why I keep saying that mascara is not makeup.
11:16It's a way of life, basically.
11:18Because that was like your first.
11:19That was like your way into expressing yourself through makeup.
11:23Exactly.
11:24Wow.
11:25Yeah.
11:26So I think that that was the beginning.
11:27But as I said, I've always seen my mom since I was a kid wear makeup.
11:31Rock amazing makeup looks like she didn't wear too much makeup.
11:34Honestly, she didn't wear anything other than lipstick.
11:36But that lipstick had an impression on me because my first lip kit with Anastasia Beverly Hills was inspired by my mother.
11:43I know you said that, you know, the reason why you really wanted to get into this is because you were told that there wasn't a space for you in the beauty world.
11:53Exactly.
11:54When was that moment for you?
11:55When did you feel, I finally feel like there's a space for me here?
11:59I think the credit has to go to my husband, to be honest.
12:01Like, he's a huge supporter.
12:04And I think he always told me that you got this.
12:07Like, people love you for this one.
12:09So your husband was your...
12:11He's my everything.
12:12He's like the best thing that happened to me.
12:14You know what I really love?
12:16Second skin.
12:17And that happens when you melt the powders and the creams together.
12:20So we're going to do that.
12:21You take the creams, you layer the powders on top, you let them sit so they melt in with your natural body oils and heat.
12:27And then you go ahead with a setting spray, which is dewy.
12:30And you melt all those layers to create one layer, which looks like porcelain Barbie doll.
12:35Yeah.
12:38I'm using Charlotte Tilbury.
12:40Airbrush Flawless.
12:41And I like to drench the face.
12:43Right.
12:44Now.
12:45And we don't talk.
12:46We don't move.
12:47We respect the makeup, because then makeup respects you.
12:50But we're going to take this up one more notch.
12:53We're going to go matte.
12:54Right.
12:55So Danessa Amaric's Yummy Skin.
12:57It's literally powder in liquid format.
13:00And this will mattify your face even more.
13:03Okay.
13:04So we're going to make it dewy and then we're going to make it matte.
13:07So it's a roll, right?
13:08Like you can make it dewy and melt it in.
13:10Then you make it matte and set it.
13:12And then you add back the highlighter on top to make it dewy again.
13:15Guys.
13:16Okay.
13:17It's a sandwich.
13:18It's a sandwich.
13:19That's what it is.
13:20Makeup sandwich.
13:21And you don't need a lot of this because you don't want to look like an over-powdered
13:27cream.
13:28Like you still want to look like porcelain skin.
13:30Now is the time we bring in the drama.
13:33The white eyeliner or the cream eyeliner.
13:35This is Urban Decay.
13:36This is what it looks like.
13:37And this is a signature water line.
13:40Okay.
13:41So this is the key to this look.
13:42This is it.
13:43The whole look is centered around this.
13:45Yeah.
13:46Right?
13:47Wow.
13:48Oh my God.
13:49Like the depth.
13:51Like this is what you call the brandy eyes I think.
13:53With like the baby doll lashes too.
13:55Yes, yes, yes.
13:56That is beautiful.
13:57So we are at the lip stage.
13:59And it's a beautiful, beautiful cool toned lip.
14:01I don't know if you can see it, but it's very, it's nude.
14:04But it's like a more cool toned nude.
14:06So I'm going with Makeup by Mario.
14:08The shade is called Dark Chocolate.
14:10So I love over lining the lip, which basically means I'm going to bring it up a little above
14:15her natural lip line onto the hydration line.
14:17And I'm going to just shade the lip liner right there.
14:22Diffusing out the lip liner completely.
14:28A lip liner honestly does 90% of the job in your lip combo.
14:32So finding the perfect shade is very, very important.
14:35Rekha's lip is more cool tone.
14:37I am going a tiny bit warmer to suit Neha's undertone.
14:42We're now going to go in with a darker shade from Kylie Cosmetics.
14:45I think this one is called Coco.
14:47And it's more, a little bit more cool.
14:49So with that, I'm going to line the lip again to add that depth.
14:54And the beauty is that this matches the smokiness on her eyes so beautifully.
14:58So this is MAC.
14:59The shade is called Signature Move.
15:00It's now getting into a little bit more cool tone.
15:01I'm going to add it right in the center to create that satin finish.
15:13This is MAC lip gloss in the shade bittersweet.
15:20Every brown girl loves MAC.
15:22So this is like a rite of passage.
15:26Setting spray.
15:27The final one.
15:28Close your eyes.
15:29I'll leave your eyes.
15:30That looks like that.
15:31I'll tie it tight from this.
15:32I'll tie it right here.
15:33I'm going to show you what I'm going to show you.
15:34This isamu.
15:35Inspired by this look, I give you Neha.
15:37Thank you guys so much.
15:39This is billboards.
15:54Billboards, rock the world.
