00:00If you told me just a few years ago that Florida's Republican governor would respond to a deadly threat with

00:04these waves are something you just have to deal with, I'd have assumed they were talking about Miami sinking into a warming ocean.

00:10John Oliver is addressing those parents who are upset that their children are being required to wear masks

00:15as kids across the country start heading back to schools.

00:18Oliver kicked off his HBO show Sunday night by noting the highly contagious Delta variant that's spreading across the world

00:23and quote, wildly around the country, particularly among the unvaccinated,

00:27and cited reports that about 15% of new cases are among children.

00:31The Last Week Tonight host said that there are at least seven states that have banned the mask requirement in schools,

00:36including Florida and Texas, and showed footage of U.S. Representative Madison Cawthorn at a school board meeting in North Carolina,

00:43arguing that the greatest threat to our children today does not come from COVID-19.

00:47It comes from local liberal government officials like you who think they are all-knowing and all-wise.

00:53I'd say I was surprised by that, but this is a man who once posted this video of himself beating up a tree.

00:59Oliver then showed another video where a school board member who voted in favor of masks was harassed outside the meeting afterward

01:05with people yelling things like you can leave freely, but we will find you and we know who you are.

01:11Holy s**t. It is genuinely hard to imagine a five-word phrase less welcome than we know who you are.

01:18Aside from obviously new Jeopardy host Mike Richards.

01:21Oliver went on to note that the first major wave of COVID cases in children is mostly in low-vaccinated states.

01:28The host noted,

01:29We are only fighting about masks in school right now because there are a bunch of foolish adults who have decided not to get the vaccine.

01:35And to all of them, I can only say, to quote a bunch of upsettingly loud idiots,

01:41we know who you are and you're the f**king problem.
