thank you so much to the hollywood reporter for this incredible honor um writing this script for
00:12
me was an amazing education and so i would say both as an artist and as a human being
00:20
so i want to thank some of the people that helped me on that journey um first of all the real life
00:26
codas who were generous enough to share their stories with me as i was writing the script
00:32
my deaf collaborators who read drafts of the script and gave me notes um my asl masters and
00:40
thomasetti and alexandria wales who were amazing partners for me in not only doing the translation
00:47
of the script but also being my eyes on deaf culture and making sure that this film felt
00:53
authentic and real and i could not have done it without them and my collaborators in front of
00:58
the camera marley troy and daniel thank you for trusting me with this story um and helping me
01:05
to shape it and tell it and make sure that we did it right um and you know i hope that the success
01:12
of coda kicks open the door because this is one story of many and i there are so many deaf artists
01:22
out there talent not only among the acting community but directors writers and i this is an incredible
01:31
language it's an incredible culture i was so honored to be a part of telling this story and i hope that
01:37
it means that more of these stories will be told so thank you so much again to the hollywood reporter
01:43
this is amazing and i feel very lucky to have taken this journey
01:47
i have so much to say but so little times but thank you to the hollywood reporter for honoring sean
01:59
with this wonderful recognition she truly deserves two three four thousand percent for this work because
02:10
all these years that i've been in the industry as an actor i've had the opportunity to see so many
02:17
different writers scripts actors directors productions in general and as far as all of them they were
02:29
almost pretty much the same they knew what to expect as for myself i knew what i was going to expect
02:34
i learned my lines i work with the actors i work with the directors but on this film on coda sean
02:43
really made a very exceptional not special because we are special characters because we happen to be
02:50
deaf she wrote a script that really was authentic to the point where we as actors who are deaf
02:58
knew this was a very important story to tell and as sean mentioned it is one of a thousand stories
03:06
to share in the future i know sean understood our culture she made a point of understanding our
03:14
language she made a point of understanding how deaf actors work with each other on a set
03:18
and that's called collaboration she understood she offered respect she listened she trusted us as actors
03:28
and with her directing with just her words of um you know as a human being she was just so warm
03:38
and creative and so passionate about her work and she really passed on a great deal of empathy and as
03:44
actors it was a joy to see us be able to explore from the first day to the last without any sort of
03:53
boundaries it was really i mean american sign language is such a crucial part of our culture
04:00
a tool if you would like to say that that it allows us to express ourselves in a genuine manner and i just
04:09
can't imagine sean not directing coda i hope and i trust that directors and writers will follow sean's
04:19
example of what a good director and writer is all about particularly as they relate to collaborating
04:29
with cultures that we've not seen before in film that we've never experienced
04:34
the opportunity to learn to do your homework and ultimately to communicate
04:41
allows you to represent and sean really is a shining example of that she's
04:50
i mean she knows what it takes to be a good director particularly with actors like ourselves
04:57
i feel really honored to have had the opportunity to work with sean and i'm so honored that my name
05:03
is included in the same project as hers and i hope that we can work together again if she'll have me
05:12
we will we will thank you sean thank you thank you for
05:21
all the things that you've done for us for listening to us and thank you
05:29
for your heart it is golden thank you for being in my movie marley
