00:00You know we used to make things in this city, we made steel, we sent it down the
00:29river to become buildings and halls for boats and 747s and all the while here at sydney's jazz lounge
00:40we made music my father played on this stage with lena horn we had culture we made legends and tonight
00:50on this stage there's a legend to be made ladies gentlemen i have seen them all but i have never
00:58seen anything like annabelle lee
01:11that's
01:28that's how it was you know that's really how it was you play like that at 11 o'clock
01:43and that talent scout from atlantic won't know what hit him you'll have no choice but to sign you
01:48scout son what you talking about man what is this 1975 you still got record scouts i got one coming
01:56on down to pittsburgh
02:02the point is that he's gonna be here tonight
02:06annabelle you all right yeah yeah i'm just gonna go um splash some water in my face
02:11no no you're going to the hospital no no no i'm fine i'm fine i'm not gonna miss my shot just to
02:29sit in the er for hours you don't have to sit there you can go in through the vip though he just
02:33got a kid that work no not john not my son i know the medical director over there mary will get you
02:39back on time shinwell take that to pathology
02:45hmm is there an issue usually when i take delivery of fingers in a bag there are no doctors present
02:54no licensed ones anyway i see i still don't get why the patient wanted them gone
03:00there are obvious benefits to having six fingers on each hand well i once had a competitive bowler tell me
03:05it was the secret to his top spin exactly he had a leg up on his rival i think you've got your
03:09anatomy wrong there i'm gonna skip the amputated fingers banter if it's all the same to y'all
03:14do you mind if i go home i have a video call with uncle june to plan his visit
03:18uncle june i can hear those scare quotes how's he related to you again he was married to my
03:24birth mother's younger sister so not a blood relative convenient i'm just saying it's harder
03:29to verify otherwise you could steal a hair and run his dna hypothetically of course his wife
03:34died of leukemia early this year i'm his only other family member in the states but it's been
03:39nice june's gonna give me cooking lessons he used to run his own chinese place in new york has he
03:43mentioned other sasha's june says that my birth mother is still in china but he's just following my
03:49lead so i figured i get to know him first see what goes from there okay sasha you can go home shinwell
03:54deliver those fingers if anyone needs me i'll be down in the er is everything good hope so my father just
04:00showed up there he has a father hamish is fine he's not the patient it's his protege he wanted me
04:10to bump them to the front of the line i've already made arrangements but i wanted to loop you in yeah
04:15but why didn't he just call me we have a good relationship what you both say that a lot
04:22when's the last time you talked last sunday when i called my mother he told me
04:25all right fine fine she told me that he wanted to invite me to a late night set at the club
04:32layla and i are going to try to make it well thankfully i am no longer the designated interpreter
04:37for the two of you look he's in with a patient if you want to know why he didn't call you
04:42why don't you ask him yourself how are you hamish hamish what happened to dad a divorce judge
04:54happened forget about all that come give me a hug hey dad john oh good of you to come
05:06it's it's uh yeah it's good to see i didn't want to pull you away from your research your mother's
05:13always talking about how busy you are i'm saying mostly patients now so yeah it's um yeah hey annabelle
05:22have the er doctors been in here to see you uh a resident came in and said she would be back soon
05:28that was 30 minutes ago oh someone needs to talk to management about that well i can exam you now
05:35save you additional weight how about i take you on a tour of you hop give you the lay of the land
05:42queen in her domain more like an overworked administrator
05:48he brags about you to everybody my son is the greatest geneticist in the world
05:54i just can't tell you that you gotta have something to work for after all yeah you got
06:00that right well anyway it's good to see you again i think the last time i saw you was at a recital
06:07when you were like i had to be about 12 years old oh yeah don't remind me uh i think 12 is when i peaked
06:14it's all been downhill from there tell me what happened tonight uh i i just got a little lightheaded
06:21and took a spill after the show but i'm fine now did this happen when you fell uh no that was earlier
06:28i tripped over a stand has there been anything else that's been bothering you recently no no not even
06:38the intermittent numbness in your right foot
06:40the wear pattern on the soles are uneven i say this has been going on for i don't know maybe
06:52three four months now that's why you stumbled twice tonight
06:58it went away i mean it always goes away after like a minute or two but numbness and weakness could
07:03be signs of something more serious why would you hide those kinds of symptoms there's a record
07:10scout coming to the show tonight hamish made it happen i i really i have to get back on stage i'm
07:14sorry annabelle i need to run some more tests i will come back right after my performance and
07:19you can run whatever test you want yes we've got to be kidding i'm admitting her to the hospital for
07:25an expedited workup this has been going on for months and it's just getting more severe
07:29tonight was evidence of that that's why i didn't come to you first mary doesn't make mountains out
07:35of molehills and neither do i annabelle passed out because she's dehydrated and tired and i've seen it
07:41happen with musicians before once the show is over she'll be fine can you help me here no i'm switzerland
07:49post-divorce version of switzerland i don't take sides no no listen to me annabelle's talent is not
07:54going anywhere yes you might know musicians but i'm her doctor now worsening numbness and weakness
08:01means this isn't just fainting and i'm not just going to let her walk out the door and risk her
08:05life because you want her to play music
08:24why would a 22 year old musical prodigy develop recurrent numbness weakness and blackouts seemingly
08:31out of nowhere is the musical prodigy part relevant maybe yes maybe no you tell me
08:42this is the part where we all trade ideas we've all googled you aggressively and extensively
08:50everybody knows that your father is a local legend why haven't you said anything why would
08:54i say anything hamish watson is a renowned tenor saxophonist and jazz educator wikipedia says
09:00that he was mentored by john coltrane is that why they named you john you're not a musician though
09:07i played the alto saxophone same as annabelle but you don't play it now otherwise you'd be invested in
09:12your career instead of hers is hamish watson disappointed in you let's focus on the patient
09:20not only is she suffering from physical decline she's dealing with immense stress from her career
09:25she has a major label behind her she has a hard-driving mentor with some very unrelenting
09:32expectations can't imagine what that's like yes it'd be too much for any one person to bear but to deal
09:38with that at that young of an age it's crushing sure we're still talking about annabelle stop we have a
09:44good relationship the differential please could still be a stroke overnight ct is negative uh but the
09:53definitive study for diagnosis is an mri an mri could also help evaluate for multiple sclerosis
09:58a young woman in her 20s with episodic weakness it's practically textbook ms is also worsened by
10:05emotional physical stress excellent point dr levick the pressure from auditioning could have triggered
10:10that attack ingrid and stevens get an mri check for stroke and multiple sclerosis sasha and adam go to
10:18annabelle's apartment see how she's been dealing with all this stress where are you going i'm taking
10:24shinwell to my father's club maybe we can find some clues
10:35woman you are a lifesaver you know you didn't have to sleep here overnight john would have let you
10:41stay at his place i promised annabelle's parents i'd stay with her in the hospital they're visiting her
10:47sister down in australia
10:54this is my guy from atlantic he's going to be in town for a couple of days says he wants to come
10:58back to the club to see annabelle she must be special if he's willing to go through all that trouble
11:04she ain't just special she is it when that child plays she forces people to pay attention
11:10it's like she's saying things for them that they can't say for themselves
11:18you really think they'll sign her
11:19hmm the label knows she can break through
11:24she's a kid a kid who wants to play jazz in 2025. she ain't no fossil with
11:32double hip replacements
11:39last night i thought i was going to sign my first record deal now i might have ms
11:43how can i play the saxophone if i can't even lift my hands
11:46i just thought i had more time i thought i was just getting started
11:55so um how does women become a musical prodigy anyway did your parents start you young
12:04no tiger mom's here my parents were too busy making ends meet they didn't have time to think about our
12:10hobbies it was hamish i was six mom got a second job as a receptionist at a music school and i would
12:21sit on the benches and wait for her to finish work
12:25i could hear hamish giving lessons in his office and i would memorize the melodies he'd play
12:33and then i would sing them back to myself and pretend i was playing too
12:40he heard me one day and he told my mom i had a great year and he offered to teach me for free
12:50he's been my teacher ever since he helped me get a scholarship to pit and gave me a spot in his
12:55band after graduation doesn't sound like he gave you anything you're wrong
13:01if he hadn't heard me that day i never would have known i would just be singing in the shower
13:13he must change my life
13:17this whole scene my dad's club oh
13:22oh if i can keep the club open for another six weeks and i can get annabelle set up
13:32it'll all be worth it you're going under does john know no no no no we're good it's the club that's
13:40sick same as annabelle is she gonna be okay john won't stop until he finds an answer
13:52i mean i get sasha's excited but this guy comes out of the woodwork claiming to be a relative and
14:01now she's inviting him into her home she's done her homework on uncle june he doesn't have a criminal
14:06record and everything he's told her so far checks out with the adoption paperwork yeah there are other
14:11ways he could have found that information look i'm her boyfriend i'll be her bodyguard but only if she
14:18wants that i've got my eye on the situation but she's happy i'm not getting in the way
14:28annabelle's MRI is done
14:33there's no evidence of a mess or a stroke but it's completely negative we're no closer to figuring
14:40out what's wrong with her oh my god j hamis watson the genius of the human genome
14:55this is the master of the 88 keys yeah right look how far that got me i'm back here polishing stemware for
15:01the night shift shimuel johnson i'm dr watson's assistant a side man eddie hans hamish's piano
15:10player and club manager i've known your man since we were both 12. yeah you and dr watson play music
15:16together oh no no hamish would never let me play with eddie this man has got some real talent talent
15:22which led me to polish and i still went hey you mind if i look around i'll be my guest man so listen
15:29hey did you notice anything strange about when annabelle fell yesterday any type of abnormal
15:34movements that could be a seizure i don't think so what about when she was performing did you notice
15:39anything i was just trying to remember the changes man so hamish didn't have my heart you know how he
15:44gets oh don't i know it would it help for you to see a video you recorded the performance amish wanted
15:51it for the website i will get it now oh definitely long time boy good to see you always good to see
15:59a lot of history here yes my grandfather sydney right there he opened up this place after he
16:08stopped touring with cold train oh that's my father and my grandfather the same picture
16:12you don't talk about him much your dad
16:17heard all about your mom and the museum imagine it must have been difficult being
16:23you with a family like this i was good at something it took me a while to find it but
16:34it's one of the most you can get
16:39annabelle's apartment is so cool wow there's nothing in this place that isn't geared towards music it's like
16:47her sole mission in life stevens ever tell you about our junior high rock band no i said half
16:54the summer i couldn't decide on a musical direction i wanted to be fish you wanted to be the strokes
17:02and now you're back side by side at the holmes clinic you made better doctors than musicians
17:09what about you did you ever uh play anything as a kid
17:11hmm i begged my mom for singing lessons thought i'd be leanne rhymes then i switched the next thing
17:17that caught my fancy
17:20dang this girl makes residency look like vacation eight hours of practice on top of rehearsals
17:28even i couldn't handle that 22.
17:33screws on this outlet cover are stripped and there's where on the plate
17:36it looks like someone tried to open it with a coin or maybe a butter knife
17:45outlet box is a good hiding place i hear about them all the time in meetings
17:49you bring that thing everywhere you go before watson i used to think doctors only carried stethoscopes
17:56oh adam you good i don't want to touch that
18:14i think i know how annabelle's been handling the pressure
18:17did you know about this
18:26don't be such a prude a prude a cocaine induced tia explains all of annabelle's symptoms the numbness
18:34the weakness the blackouts many strokes caused by drug use could even explain her negative mri
18:40well that's not what happened you're a music teacher not a doctor
18:45you know i have worked with dozens of strung out players this is how they deal with the stress
18:56the travel the haunting what's the haunting there's the art form their standards then there's you
19:04the haunting is that feeling of not being able to measure up i confronted annabelle about this months
19:12ago she stopped then and there oh so so that's like your professional opinion you confronted
19:17did you give her a drug test this is so much fun you two have a good relationship who wouldn't want
19:23to spend as much time as possible around that john if you're worried that annabelle is still using
19:28cocaine why don't you talk to her directly what were you hoping cocaine would do for you i wanted
19:37to play the way i'm supposed to play if there's a powder or syringe that can help me do that i'll try
19:42all of it am i looking at me like that i run your tests i quit and for the record the numbness and the
19:50weakness that all started before i got high i was worried that my symptoms would start affecting my
19:58playing and it was distracting me during shows everyone said coke helps you focus so i tried it
20:06like i said i'll try anything you've been spending too much time around my father hamish
20:12no he turned his back on his talent he gave up everything for you what
20:17hamish could have been a legend
20:23instead he's in pittsburgh
20:27man i don't blame my father for this we're doing fine
20:32what's with the face this is a perfectly neutral expression i'm not mad at him i'm not i'm telling
20:39you i'm not okay it's it's not my father it's who
20:43it's kind of silly
20:50my problem is with the universe well that's always a productive stance i mean look
20:56he didn't do anything wrong i just want to know when i can finally stand there with my father
21:01and feel like me who do you feel like now like an eight-year-old kid who knows he needs to get better
21:08at the auto sacks annabelle's talk screen came back negative she can't have done cocaine in the past five
21:18days we're at a bit of a dead end figure we hit a fresh tomorrow you good i'm fine dr darien just
21:29spend some time with my patient
21:52so
21:59i refuse to ask for water i take a young eating many hunanese food before
22:13i'm fine i'm fine you know spicy food runs in your blood that's why our region produced so
22:20many revolutionaries the chairman mods of them was from hunan too wow no wonder i can never win an
22:26argument with you
22:30it's been special to share this time with you sasha i've really enjoyed it too thank you so much for
22:36coming all this way to see me i want to give you this gift to mark this occasion
22:42is
22:51is that her
22:52is that my mom
22:56yes
22:57you look remarkably like her oh oh dear okay okay okay okay you all right please have some
23:15oh those guys look familiar where they from oh um i got a few moles removed to medical school my
23:23physical exam lab partner she pointed them out good thing she did too doctor said it must have ruined
23:28my family i remember your mother had something like that
23:32i stopped touring after john was born my dad asked if i want to take over the club
23:44seemed like a good idea at the time sometimes i wonder
23:48hey john come join us shinwell and i uh pilfered your finest whiskey no it's no use i know that face
24:00looks what's and is in work mode how does she do it i mean how does she physically do it
24:10well she's playing in the altissimo register the highest on the saxophone
24:15well in those notes they require time to develop it needs an increase in air and intensity
24:29why what is it it's music or ambition it's you if i'm right annabelle's jazz career is killing her
24:45i'm right
24:47puffer smoke or as the japanese would call it moya moya she has moya moya disease very good dr darian
24:54now would you care to explain what that is moya moya is a rare disorder that results in the narrowing
25:00of a major blood vessel in her brain which limits blood flow the body forms abnormal collateral vessels
25:05to compensate like finding an alternate route home when there's traffic on the four pit bridge the puffer smoke
25:10sign can only be seen on an angiogram not an mri which is why it escaped our notice at first how did
25:17you know to look for it that video of her playing annabelle started getting dizzy at the end of her
25:22solo it was something about how she was playing music that caused annabelle to black out she went to
25:29your dance i helped yes he explained that in order for her to hit the high notes annabelle had to increase
25:34the speed of air that she was sending to the saxophone she blew up all her co2 she was basically
25:38hyperventilating which decreased the flow to her already blood-starved brain yes annabelle is having
25:46many strokes just not due to the drugs every time she pushes herself while playing she puts herself at
25:52risk for another one if this is moya moya it's not just tia's we need to be afraid of we're lucky she
25:58hasn't had a major stroke by now you're right but the good news is moya moya is one of the rare causes
26:04of stroke that is actually treatable you want me to have brain surgery you and i have different
26:11definitions of good news a neurosurgeon can take part of the blood vessel from your scalp and reconnect
26:18it inside your brain it will bypass the blockage from your moya moya with a consistent blood supply
26:25you shouldn't have any more numbness weakness from the mini strokes and you'll also significantly
26:30reduce the risk of having a full-blown stroke isn't there something like less invasive we could try
26:35first medications maybe i don't recommend that worsening neurologic symptoms means that your brain
26:41is already being impacted but i feel fine outside of these episodes i'm playing better than i ever have
26:46i mean i'll just take a break from high notes that's not a fix annabelle plus knowing you that's not
26:52sustainable
26:58if you mess with my brain will it affect my musical abilities the surgery would be on the left side of
27:03the brain music is mostly controlled by the right mostly but not entirely
27:10we think that musicality
27:19resides in the left brain you want to remove the soul from my music okay annabelle any effects from the
27:24surgery should be temporary a stroke could result in permanent disability or even death but but you
27:30can't even say for sure that i'll have one and if i do it could be in five ten years from now i wouldn't
27:36take that bed if i were you but can you guarantee that this surgery won't affect my talent because
27:40being a musician is so much more than just playing notes it's about making people feel them i'm sorry
27:49i can't promise you that it's brain surgery annabelle then i don't want it
27:55you have your entire life ahead of you you're more than just a musical prodigy
28:12this is about staying alive
28:14haven't you ever wanted to change the world dr watson
28:22make your mark and and leave this place better than you found it
28:29i have i can't save lives like you but i can impact them with my music
28:35i can bring people joy i can bring them to tears just with the way that i play
28:43but all of that goes away if you cut my talent out of my head
28:55you okay you've been distracted ever since dinner i'm fine i just
29:01i can't stop thinking about my birth mom what did your father say that he wish i were still that
29:08baby he carried back to dallas 35 years ago that photo brought back all his memories so it's definitely
29:15you huh which means it's definitely her there's just something else that uncle june said i'm just
29:20saying people can have a second calling look at chinwell look at me i thought my life was over
29:26after my diving injury do not equate your situation to hers you are a moderately talented collegiate
29:32athlete she is a jazz virtuoso at 22 she could be the next charlie parker i get it she don't want
29:38to look back and wonder what might have been i don't blame her we all want our chance at greatness
29:43that's why we work for watson would you risk your intelligence even if it meant saving your life
29:48you guys are all wasting your time are we trying to convince annabelle to get the surgery
29:54it's not her that we need to commit it's him do you even realize the power that you have what are
30:02you talking about i own a failing jazz club and i'm living off your mother's savings but none of that
30:07matters not to annabelle to someone who wants your approval you are like music itself your opinion
30:18means everything to her if you told her to have the more and more surgery she'd do it
30:28dad this is her life
30:33music is her life i know that that's important to her but it's not the same thing okay it can't be the
30:43same thing she's afraid of losing something that is as vital to her as breathing that's why she won't
30:51risk it i'm sorry john i'm not gonna pressure her into making that kind of decision that's hers and hers
31:00alone she's not making this decision for herself she's making that decision for you
31:05you wanted her to be this prodigy you wanted her to uphold your legacy and she wanted so badly to
31:17please you she would put herself aside if it meant making you happy if you care about her if you really
31:26care about her stop putting that burden on her and let her live her life
31:31i showed annabelle what she could do who she could be she does not want to have the surgery john
31:41oh you know if you were a musician you'd understand that
31:51i was so happy when you wanted to have lunch before i took the bus back
31:56something wrong sasha i used to wonder what my birth mom looked like when i was a kid
32:10thanks to you now i know it's good to know family that's how you know yourself
32:18the skin condition i have fa triple m it's autosomal dominant that means you only need one
32:29effective parent to inherit it the other night you said that she had it but when i look at this
32:34picture again i noticed that my mother's shoulders were clear that means she couldn't have given it to
32:39me which means he lied just like you lied about being my uncle why'd you do it you found out my
32:48family had money planned to ask for a little bit here and a little bit there and the next thing i know
32:52i'm out 50 grand i can explain i already have an explanation
33:00do not contact me again ross will call the police
33:05i'm not your uncle
33:08but i don't want the money i have enough aren't you wondering how i got that photo of you
33:14in your birth mom i know i can find her identity
33:25i'm lonely sasha i'm alone that's why i did this if you ever want to see her i can help
33:36you're good thank you thank you what do i already say is he still on the come hear me play yeah he's
33:49coming to the club tomorrow evening on his way to the train station okay i think i should start with
33:52misty he's gonna be expecting a burner so a bow to really take him by surprise it'll be like an homage
33:57to the hill annabelle about this surgery
34:08maybe maybe you should do it
34:15yeah i mean i'll think about it later i might not get another chance
34:20it's gonna be okay it's okay i'm gonna get some help john
34:30something wrong with annabelle
34:39what happened she wanted to play annabelle you have to slow your breathing can you do that for me
34:44all right here we go good job very good
34:55annabelle annabelle what's wrong john john what's wrong with her she must have triggered a stroke
35:01get that crash car
35:0222 year old female with more and more disease symptoms are concerning for an acute stroke
35:13stevens where are we with the bolus i'm giving it now very good we need to raise her blood pressure
35:17to promote the blood flow to her brain if this is a stroke it'll prevent it from spreading radiology
35:21knows we're coming they've got the scanner ready for her everybody you're ready to move
35:24john where are you taking her because i really i need you to step back i cannot beat you later but
35:28right now we need to save annabelle four stroke i've been looking for you john and his team were
35:47able to treat annabelle four stroke she's sleeping in the icu you can see her if you like thank you
