DoorDash and UberEats drivers could earn minimum hourly wage

Doordash and UberEats drivers could soon be earning a minimum wage if the Fair Work Commission signs off on a deal with the transport workers union. It would mean drivers would earn a minimum hourly rate rather than a percentage of each delivery they make.

00:00i think in reality it will be a combination of the consumer maybe a slightly higher fee

00:08at the restaurant and the platforms themselves might cover some of the costs as well but i guess

00:15the point is that for the gig economy up until this point workers haven't had any safety net

00:21and like every other kind of industry in australia these workers are now going to be covered by some

00:28standards and of course there's costs associated with providing those minimum standards this is the

00:33very first kind of agreement that we're seeing regulating you know what we call gig work but the

00:39gig economy is much more diverse than than people delivering food to our houses so we think about

00:45the care sector obviously the growth of the ndis mask last mile delivery companies like amazon flex

00:52so i expect to see over the coming months and years standards emerging across the gig economy but

01:00this is certainly a big development for this particular part of the gig economy i think now

01:05they have some regulatory certainty obviously pending the fair work commission agreeing to to the what the

01:11companies and the union have proposed today and that creates certainty for the industry the two biggest

01:18players are greats and door dash as we saw menu log decide to close its operations recently so it is an

01:26industry that has challenges in terms of its financial sustainability and i think this provides an

01:31opportunity for some certainty around rates of pay what the regulation for the industry looks like

01:36and and they can make decisions and think about how they best structure their business based on those
