00:00Atlanta's Music Midtown Festival has been canceled after a court ruling made it illegal
00:04to keep guns out of the event.
00:13The long-running Music Midtown Festival at Piedmont Park in Atlanta, scheduled for September
00:1717th and 18th with headliners My Chemical Romance, Future, Jack White and Fall Out Boy,
00:23has been called off, according to a statement issued by festival organizers.
00:27Although not cited by the organizers, the likely cause has to do with recent changes
00:31to Georgia gun laws that prevent the festival from banning guns on the publicly-owned festival grounds.
00:37In 2014, Georgia passed a law officially known as the Safe Carry Protection Act that allows
00:42people to carry firearms in bars, churches, schools, private businesses and on public-owned
00:48state land like Piedmont Park, where the festival is held.
00:51The Georgia Supreme Court made a decision in 2019 that makes it impossible for short-term
00:55private events like music festivals to prohibit guns on public land.
01:00Music Midtown has always banned guns, and many artist contracts require firearms to be barred
01:05from the premises for them to perform.
