Kyle MacLachlan dissects Sunday night's polarizing finale of 'Twin Peaks: The Return.'
Transcript
00:00Are you still reeling from Sunday night's Twin Peaks The Return finale? Well, join the club,
00:09which includes no less than FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper himself among its members.
00:14The Hollywood Reporter's Josh Wigler spoke to series star Kyle MacLachlan about the haunting
00:19ending in which our hero seems to have failed. The beloved Special Agent stands outside the
00:24Palmer residence with Carrie Page, a woman who looks exactly like Laura Palmer and is, in fact,
00:30played by Cheryl Lee, but the world is apparently completely unaware of their existence.
00:36Are they in an alternate universe? Is the timeline reset? Is it all a dream? Who is the dreamer?
00:41No easy answers are given, but Cooper's final words will linger. What year is it?
00:47I'm still reeling at Mitz McLaughlin. Reeling, I think, is the word about what it all means.
00:52When it comes to the polarizing audience reaction to part 18 of David Lynch and Mark
00:56Frost's Showtime revival, the star points out, well, good art asks questions, you know. It doesn't
01:02always provide answers. I think that's what we're experiencing right now. It's not always the most
01:07comfortable or the most satisfying feeling. Things certainly aren't comfortable for Cooper at the
01:11end of his long path as he appears unsure of himself and lost in the final on-screen moments.
01:17It's certainly a hero's journey, says MacLachlan. I have the same questions that everyone has.
01:21Is this it? Was he successful at all?
01:24If he wanted to, the longtime Lynch collaborator could pose those very questions to the show's
01:29notoriously tight-lipped director and co-creator. But, unsurprisingly, MacLachlan won't go down that
01:35path. I don't ask him, and I wouldn't ask him actually, knowing him as I do now, because the whole
01:40journey was for the audience to experience and to take away from the experience their own interpretation.
01:45The actor also notes there have been no discussions for a follow-up season to this point.
01:50So, as we potentially kick off our next 25 years of theorizing about Lynch and Frost's latest
01:55cryptic cliffhanger, be sure to dive into THR.com's complete coverage, including Josh Wiggler's full
02:00interview with MacLachlan, a rundown of how the return ended for every main character, and 18 burning
02:06questions about the finale, including, What did Laura whisper to Cooper in the Red Room? Where in the
02:12world is Audrey freaking Horn? And for the love of humanity, Mr. Lynch, who the heck is Billy?
02:17Do you have answers to any of these questions? Should we enter the White Lodge now and beg the
02:22fireman for a new season? Does anyone know what year it is? Let us know your thoughts on everything
