00:00Once again the referee in charge, now to give instructions, Nobuto Ikehara.
00:07Now we take a look at the tail of the tape to Moisa Boyan, Carlos Quadras, you see Quadras, 37 years of age but enjoying a height and reach advantage.
00:36Here tonight to go along with his professional experience advantage but Moisa Boyan pushed back on that a little bit and he brought up of course his amateur background.
00:49He said I've won more total fights than he has. I've been in more fights than he has. He doesn't think that that's going to be an issue here tonight.
00:56Well one of the things as we see Tomoya Tsuboi look brilliant in his all black A6 because we always got to check what he's got on his feet. All black A6 today.
01:06But in that pre-fight feature, Carlos Quadras was talking about his level of experience and how he's going to bring this experience to bear against Tomoya Tsuboi.
01:15Experience is one thing and what you're actually able to do on the night is something different.
01:19And if Carlos Quadras, if he starts it slowly in this fight as he did in his last fight against Kiko Rusma, he's going to find himself behind on the scorecards very quickly.
01:29So what he's going to have to experience if he doesn't start quickly is what it feels like to have to come from behind on the road.
01:37Quick intervention there from the official. A little bit of a warning for a low shot from Quadras.
01:47Tsuboi jab has been landing consistently already here.
01:56That was one of the things we noticed about Tsuboi in his last fight against Tran was how effectively, even as the shorter fighter,
02:03he was able to dominate with his jab to the head and to the body.
02:08And Tran was never able to get into a rhythm because Tsuboi kept sticking him with that jab.
02:13So we'll see if it's any different for Quadras.
02:19It's a quick combination there from Tsuboi looking effortless here in the early going.
02:24Tsuboi said that he wants to win and win strategically such that he leaves Quadras with nothing to do.
02:33round after round. And he's off to a good start in that regard because the hand speed and the timing are freezing Quadras here in the early going.
02:41That's exactly the word for Ikoria.
02:44Quadras, there's a little lag time in him seeing what's coming and figuring out what to do about it.
02:51And in that lag time, Tsuboi's getting work done.
02:57Tsuboi looking very comfortable here in the early going.
03:00There's some reddening on the face of Quadras already.
03:06You mentioned the speed of Quadras and what could be left of it at this point as he takes a nice pull counter right hand there for Tsuboi.
03:14One of the concerns that in the midst of that win streak that he's on, which is impressive for where he's at in his career.
03:21Yes.
03:22Remember in 2023 in a fight, he suffered an Achilles injury and an Achilles injury for a 37 year old.
03:28You have a lot of questions about how they could bounce back as the seconds tick away here in the opening round.
03:49Thank you very much.
04:06Now, one, two.
04:36It's round two underway, fantastic start for Tomoya Saboy, dominating Carlos Quadras
04:47in the early going, but of course the longer this fight lasts, if Quadras can remain spry
04:54enough it becomes more interesting if maybe he can find ways to slow the pace down a little
04:59bit because Saboy is about a step and a half ahead right now.
05:04And again, if Carlos Quadras' most recent fight is any indication, yeah, he had a really
05:09rocky first three rounds when it was a question of speed, he looked really slow, but as he
05:17got into his rhythm about the third or fourth round, things started to go better for him.
05:22He was able to let go with both hands to the body and see him throw that left hook, there's
05:26a lot of whip on that left hook when he throws it to the body and to the head, but the question
05:32is whether or not Tomoya Saboy will let Carlos Quadras' back into the fight if he builds
05:38this big lead on the first three rounds.
05:41And after four or five rounds, will that lead be so big that Carlos Quadras' has nothing
05:44left to do except take chances?
05:49Because Quadras already has no answers for that jab.
05:53And the jab is already causing swelling in addition to that reddening that we pointed
05:58out in the opening frame and now a beautiful chopping right hand.
06:02Look at the nonchalance in the body language of Saboy right now.
06:07And that Morgan is part of what makes Suboy an interesting character as well.
06:13He kind of has a different personality than a lot of the mainstream Japanese fighters that
06:18we've seen.
06:19And we've seen it out of Inoue a little more, a little kind of edginess.
06:22With Suboy, he's not quite as humble and self-deprecating as some of his contemporaries.
06:29Suboy, as we mentioned, straight to the point, he was respectful of Carlos Quadras, but also
06:34said, I think that I'm better than him in every single way.
06:36He's not humble or self-deprecating, but at the same time, he's this guy that takes his
06:43craft seriously without taking himself too seriously.
06:46You can see it in the way he moves.
06:47You can see it in his demeanor in the corner between rounds.
06:50He's calm.
06:51He's smiling.
06:52He takes the job seriously, but he's also still having a good time doing stuff like that,
06:56letting both hands go to the body and to the head.
06:59Really, the first good work of the fight there from Quadras, a little shoe shine combination
07:04of the body in reply to one from Suboy.
07:09For that longer range, you're continuing to see the struggles that Quadras has right now.
07:16Dealing with that athletic in-and-out movement from Suboy, the timing and the hand speed, and
07:23now Suboy getting a little bit more confident.
07:26He's smiling at Quadras as he hangs in the pocket to land one of those good left hooks.
07:35Quadras right there, Corey, you see him getting beat to the punch.
07:37He leans in with that jab to the body.
07:39His punch is on the way, and Suboy's counter is already connecting.
07:46And this is one of the dilemmas Carlos Quadras is facing tonight is that, as you said, he's
07:54the taller fighter.
07:55He's the longer fighter, but at distance, he's getting beat to the punch.
07:58So his only answer is to get inside, but on the inside, he's also going to get beat to
08:02the punch because Suboy is so much faster.
08:04He has to find some type of way to hurt Suboy.
08:06But his other dilemma is that the disparity in foot speed is so glaring that if at any
08:14point Suboy feels like making this ring bigger, he can do that.
08:20And Carlos Quadras will have nothing left to do with that extra space in the ring except
08:26to lurch around and sort of groping for Suboy, unless he can find a way to cut the ring and
08:31hurt Suboy fairly quickly.
08:36You can see the swelling on the right side of Quadras' face already.
08:41Comes out firing with a right hand.
08:43Round three now underway.
08:45A different demeanor here from Quadras, biting down on the mouthpiece a little bit, a little
08:51more intensity in his gait.
08:55Perhaps sensing what we were looking at in rounds one and two, that this could be a fight that
09:01could quickly get away from him.
09:05Before you even realize that you could be down six-zip at this kind of pace.
09:10And look at Suboy.
09:11He is just going for a Sunday morning jog here.
09:14Beautiful jab there from Suboy.
09:16You can see it right there, Corey.
09:18Suboy is the shorter fighter, the shorter arm fighter, but he's still winning that jab battle.
09:24And again, right there.
09:28Quadras winding up to this big overhand right even before he lets it go.
09:35Suboy popping him with the jab.
09:39Saw a little stumble in the footing of Quadras as well.
09:44That footwork of Quadras has really been his hallmark throughout his career.
09:52Just beautiful footwork.
09:53And you're starting to see it deteriorate a little bit with a younger, quicker opponent.
10:00Yes.
10:01Now Quadras getting to the inside, cranking that left hook.
10:04One of them low, but a good idea and a mild sign of encouragement here for Quadras.
10:13Nice right hand over the top there from Suboy.
10:17And again, those two sequences right there are going to be Quadras' problem all night.
10:23He wants to establish the jab.
10:25He gets clipped over the top with counter punches.
10:28He wants to throw that overhand right.
10:30Suboy sticks him with the jab.
10:33Inside the final minute here of round three.
10:39Quadras going to touch the body there of Suboy with the right hand.
10:44Suboy has figured out a way to just hit Quadras as he steps out.
10:59Both times catching him, once with the left hook, once with the right hand.
11:14So if...
11:15Just like that.
11:16Exactly.
11:17And if Quadras winds up landing something that catches the judge's eye, Suboy always gets
11:22the last one.
11:23Right hand to the body there from Suboy.
11:28Right there.
11:30Last one.
11:31Left hook, right hand from Suboy.
11:33Quadras stumbles back.
11:35And Toboya Suboy with a dream start here against Carlos Quadras.
11:41As you watch the two of them walk back to their corners, you can see the difference in body
11:46language.
11:47Suboy is almost floating back to his corner.
11:49You saw Quadras pull his mouth guard out, sort of shake his head.
11:53And he looks extremely frustrated, which is really understandable because he's getting beat to
11:58the punch.
11:59He's not first.
12:00He's not last in any exchange.
12:02And again, with the Blue Jay logos on the ring, there's Junto Nakatani in his trademark Canadian
12:14tuxedo, denim on denim.
12:16And there's Makito Nakatani who we will see in just a few moments as Takuma Inoue starts to wrap up ahead of our
12:28main event.
12:30Big clash against tension to Sukulot.
12:33Back to action here.
12:38Tomoya Suboy and Carlos Quadras.
12:41Suboy taking on one of the crucial pieces of the 115 pound division over the last 10, 15 years and doing so in
12:52just his third professional fight.
12:57And right, at least at this point, Morgan, this is looking like a tremendous piece of strategic
13:03matchmaking.
13:04Yes.
13:05On the part of Suboy and his handlers at Taken.
13:09Yeah, because you, by the merits, just taking two fighters regardless of what their name is.
13:15You have one guy that's really fast and another guy that's experienced but kind of slow.
13:20But, put the names back on the resume and you have, you put the names back on the fight,
13:26back on the marquee, and what you have is a tremendous name.
13:31Tomoya Suboy looks to be in the process of adding to his resume.
13:46Three or four right hands there from Quadras landing.
13:49Yeah, that uppercut was probably his best punch of the fight so far.
13:53But Quadras, too, does have this tendency to throw a bunch of punches in a row with his right hand.
13:59And his left hand gets wayward.
14:01He hasn't done it much in this fight.
14:02He did a lot against Guzmang.
14:03And you watch him do that on video and you wonder how that's going to go over with a world-class opponent.
14:10That's right hand to the body there from Suboy.
14:19Quadras, and again, regretting on a curve here, is having the most success that he's had in this fight here in the fourth.
14:26Yes.
14:27It's his best round.
14:28It's still not a round that he's, might not be a round that he's winning, but it is his best round.
14:33Nice right hand again.
14:43That one forces Quadras to take a step back.
14:46This is something that we saw for the first time in round three, Morgan.
14:51Quadras taking steps back, not because of pressure, not because of speed, but because of the impact of Suboy's shots.
14:58Because he got jolted with the right hand as he was in the process of throwing that left hook to the body.
15:03And you can hear Quadras' corner telling him to raise his hands and he does it immediately.
15:10But the problem is, is too many punches coming from too many angles.
15:16Double left hook there from Suboy.
15:21As we get to the final seconds of the round, that right hand, just a lead right hand connecting there on Carlos Quadras.
15:31And that is generally a glaring sign of a hand speed difference.
15:37And Quadras raises his arms, maybe in defiance.
15:40Yes.
15:41And there's that right hand, Corey, as a single shot, just comes so fast from Suboy, whether he throws it straight or whether he throws a roundhouse.
15:54And again, in these exchanges, when Quadras thinks he's gonna get his damage done, that edge and hand speed always goes to Suboy.
16:04So if they're throwing at the same time, Quadras might get three punches off, but Suboy's gonna get five or six.
16:10You see Panda Neijar in the corner of Carlos Quadras.
16:20You see Panda Neijar in the corner of Carlos Quadras, and if this fight, Morgan, is what it looks like for Quadras, one in which if he wants to win, it will be done through digging to deeper depths than his younger opponent.
16:46He has the right corner for that. Of course, Panda Neijar, he's been a fantastic coach for a long time in the US amateur system, but through to recognition for his work with William Zepeda and their wild training camps in Hiccapilco, up in the mountains, the cardio program.
17:02If you need someone to push you to another level, that's the man to have in your corner.
17:08The question is, what does Quadras have left in the tank to give to him?
17:12Yeah, and well, also, again, we talk about this all the time in fights, when your corner starts making the transition from giving you tactical advice to just encouragement.
17:24And what I heard in the corner from Quadras and coaches was just them saying, hey, you're more experienced. Go out and hurt this guy. Just hurt him. Hurt him.
17:31You know how to hurt him? Go hurt him without giving technical advice.
17:35Because what technical advice can you give them to close that gap in hand speed?
17:44It's one thing to tell Quadras to hurt Suboy. It's another thing to give him advice on how to do it.
17:50Good left hook there from Suboy.
17:59Well, it may be reading between the lines there, Morgan. I mean, that could be, you know, less about trying to tell Quadras exactly how to do it.
18:09He's certainly done it plenty of times, but more so letting him know, hey, even if you're losing rounds here, trying to hurt Suboy is what you have to do at this point.
18:18Because I don't know that winning enough rounds looking ahead in this fight for Quadras is a realistic possibility.
18:25Well, no. And what they told him in the corner is you have the experience. Go out there and hurt him.
18:30Hard body shot there from Suboy. You can see Quadras taking a deep breath after that one.
18:41Side break!
18:49You see Quadras already looking like he's gone 10 or 12 rounds.
18:53And he's basically only touching Suboy when Suboy makes the decision to stand there and shell up.
19:10Because Suboy has decided he wants to fight on the inside.
19:14Nice quick combination there from Suboy.
19:16To your point, Morgan, this is voluntary work on the inside.
19:25This is a good sign in terms of Suboy and what he could look like moving forward at 115.
19:33Bringing that physical strength, that sturdiness from 118 down to 115, which he has not weighed since he was an amateur in 2019.
19:42Well, they both made that weight comfortably, Corey.
19:47And there's that accidental clash of heads.
19:52And Quadras definitely got the worst of it.
19:53He got the crown of the head right to the cheekbone.
20:00And Suboy doing more of what he's been doing all night and what Carlo Quadras just has no answer for.
20:06When he lets go with both hands to the body.
20:10Again, they can be in exchange.
20:12But one guy is going to throw and land a lot more and that guy has been Suboy.
20:15Okay.
20:16Okay, so now round six.
20:19Round six underway.
20:21Now, round six.
20:35Round six underway.
20:41We mentioned earlier that Suboy pointed out that the experience gap wouldn't be that consequential
20:49or at all consequential in this fight.
20:51He pointed out his own experience in the amateur ranks.
20:56And just to put in perspective when Suboy started and kind of who some of his amateur contemporaries were,
21:04he's a part of the 1995 generation, so to speak, of Japanese fighters alongside Kosei Tanaka,
21:11who's already retired, multiweight world champion, already retired, Takuma Inoue,
21:16we'll see in our main event, Diego Higa, who's in the autumn of his career.
21:21So Suboy is starting his career at a time when his amateur contemporaries are winding theirs down.
21:28Yeah, so what that tells you, too, is he is also a veteran, like Momachenko.
21:33He's a guy who turned pro at a really high starting point.
21:37So it's really deceiving to look at his pro record and think of that as an indication of his experience level.
21:43So the questions we had about Suboy a couple of fights ago were,
21:48did he have the conditioning to last 10 rounds at a professional pace?
21:52Answer those questions last time out.
21:54And did he have sort of the depth of boxing knowledge, the layers,
21:59to be able to make adjustments over the course of a 10-round fight
22:03and adjust to your opponent's adjustment?
22:04You showed that last time out, too.
22:06Are you showing that tonight against Quadras?
22:07Double uppercut there from Quadras, not able to move Suboy whatsoever.
22:13Comes back with his own heart combination to the body.
22:21You see the sturdiness of that guard of Suboy on the inside here.
22:26I mean, a lot of these shots, Morgan, they're touching glove,
22:29but they're not having any kind of impact on Suboy.
22:33Nice right hand.
22:35That is a rocket of a right hand over the top from Suboy.
22:40And we've entered a phase in this fight and in this round where Suboy,
22:44he's just looking to prove a point.
22:46Down goes Quadras.
22:47That will be ruled a slip.
22:51The PA announcer got excited momentarily.
22:54Because he's just chosen to raise his hands and go forehead to forehead with Quadras.
22:58This is right where Quadras wants to fight.
23:00And Quadras still can't get anything done.
23:02Quadras is thinking twice about letting punches go
23:06because he realizes what's coming back his way right there.
23:12Quadras taking pains to hunch over a little bit, too.
23:14Maybe guarding against some of these body shots.
23:17They have been mounting, as has the punishment up top.
23:22Some double over with that uppercut to the stomach.
23:28Quadras just getting bullied in this round.
23:30Another left hook to the body from Suboy.
23:42And very different looks on the faces of Suboy and Quadras as they sat down on their stools.
23:49You saw Quadras right there try the old can opener on Suboy and pull Suboy's left hand down.
23:59And before he could even get a punch off, Suboy was using that left hand to rip Quadras with a left hook to the rib cage.
24:06And we're reaching the point, Corey, we think about the trajectory of this fight and the trajectory of Quadras' career where his coroner have to ask themselves what else they have to prove by sending him back out.
24:23Because he has shown that when Suboy takes this fight where Carlos Quadras wants it, Carlos Quadras still can't hurt him.
24:32And their only advice to him in the corner between rounds is to go out and hurt him.
24:36And when they fight this fight at Suboy's range, Carlos Quadras can't touch him.
24:40But Carlos Quadras is getting marked up.
24:44He's taking a beating tonight.
24:45And so I'm wondering at what point his coroner decides, as it was in Spanish, no vale la pena, it's not worth it to send him back out there.
24:54No, it's a good point, Morgan, because you could, we may look back at round six as kind of that maybe psychological breaking point.
25:03Yes.
25:03To your point where Suboy went out and proved that in the space where Quadras needs to be to win this fight, he couldn't win that round at the very least.
25:13He couldn't not even win segments of this.
25:15Right.
25:16And now Suboy just peppering the body of Carlos Quadras.
25:19Look at the look on Carlos Quadras' face.
25:22For a guy as tough and experienced as Carlos Quadras to lose his poker face when he gets hit in the body, that tells you a lot.
25:28Look at the hand speed of Suboy just battering Quadras here.
25:38And if Suboy had a little more one-punch power, a sequence like that would be where
25:43a referee just takes the opportunity to step in and stop the fight, where there's 10, 12 unanswered punches.
25:51The dilemma being that no single one of those punches makes Quadras queasy.
25:57And so you can hear the advice from Quadras' corner and it's changed.
26:13So before they were saying go out there and hurt him, now they're just saying move your head, make it hard for him.
26:16So their goals, they've ratcheted their goals down from winning to hurting him to just making it difficult for Suboy.
26:26Well, you'd have to believe there's an understanding, too, in Quadras and, of course, this corner,
26:37that at this point, either a collection of knockdowns or a knockout is the only path to victory.
26:44And perhaps the best way for Quadras to potentially accomplish that is to at least be at long range.
26:54Because on the inside, where he thought he was going to have his most success, he was getting beaten up.
26:59And again, but for him to fight at long range, he's back to the problem he was experiencing in the first range,
27:06which is when he tried to throw jabs, tried to throw right hands from distance, he was getting countered.
27:16But on the inside, he's just at a speed disadvantage, like right there.
27:19Beautiful counter left hook there from Suboy.
27:23And there's Suboy not accepting the clinch.
27:24Suboy has not taken the fight out of him quite yet.
27:48Like a sequence like this, Corey, if Suboy had more one-punch power,
27:51maybe would have wobbled Quadras and given the referee an excuse to come in and stop that fight.
28:06And each of these sequences is the fight in microcosm.
28:10Quadras letting go three or four punches, most of which don't land,
28:14and then taking a clean punch in return.
28:16Okay.
28:21The old champion, Carlos Quadras, trying to extend that golden era, so to speak.
28:45He might have run into the next generation, or maybe just the current generation.
28:52The current generation.
28:52And Tomoya Suboy right now, who has looked concerningly casual in his dominance of Quadras,
29:02perhaps owed, Morgan, to the Buddhist goma ritual that he performed with Shonakata,
29:10the Japanese baseball star, she said cleared his mind entirely and allowed him to let some things go before this fight.
29:21He certainly looks incredibly calm in there tonight.
29:25Look at that counter jab from Tomoya Suboy.
29:28That friendship, by the way, with Nakata, that kind of speaks to what we were talking about with Suboy.
29:36Nakata, he was kicked off the Nippon Ham Fighters for fighting with his teammates.
29:40So there's a willingness with Suboy to, you know, to associate with some edgier figures.
29:46And he's showing a little bit of an edge here against Quadras, especially on the inside.
29:50Suboy is a fighter, and contrary to what a lot of North Americans think,
29:54when they hear there's a baseball team called the Nippon Ham Fighters.
29:58It's not a group of people that fights Ham.
30:00They're not the Ham Fighters.
30:01That's right.
30:01Nippon Ham.
30:02The team is literally called the Fighters.
30:04Yes.
30:05Which makes me wonder why they're surprised that people get in there and fight.
30:09Yes.
30:09Stop.
30:10Time.
30:11Especially the players who are friends with boxers.
30:13Right.
30:14Looks like we'll tidy up the tape on the left glove of Carlos Quadras.
30:24And back to action here again.
30:38It's a 10-rounder.
30:41And Carlos Quadras.
30:45You know, perhaps there is a round in there that you could give him, Morgan,
30:49but I'm not certain which one.
30:51One round, even one round is generous.
30:58You'd have to give him every benefit of every doubt.
31:05Nice, hard right hand there from Suboy,
31:09and that one backs Quadras up against the ropes.
31:12Quadras in serious trouble here, and he grabs a hold.
31:15Quadras just getting utterly overwhelmed by the hand speed
31:23and the accuracy of Tomoya Suboy.
31:31Okay, and what we're learning is that experience alone doesn't really matter
31:37if the other guy is also world-class.
31:43Experience and real-time ability are not the same for you.
31:50A younger, fresher, faster fighter with an elite set of skills,
31:55and that is it.
31:56Tomoya Suboy just casually annihilated Carlos Quadras.
32:04That is a scary performance from Suboy.
32:08Annihilation is the word, and look at Quadras.
32:10You have to feel for Quadras because if whatever he expected from this fight,
32:15he did not expect this.
32:16He thought his experience would carry him further than it did,
32:20but just the difference in speed and in accuracy in processing time,
32:26much too vast for Quadras at age 37 to overcome.
32:32Well, Quadras said before the fight that if Suboy can beat me,
32:37he's ready for a world title fight.
32:39And again, we all know who is atop the 115-pound division,
32:43and I don't know that Suboy's handlers would want to put him in
32:46with Bam Rodriguez tomorrow.
32:48But as we referenced, this is a division that if Bam unifies,
32:53he will in all likelihood want to chase something else.
32:56And so there could be that clearing out, a refresh of 115
33:00in the same way there has been at 118.
33:02We watched that Bam Rodriguez fight last night,
33:04and that was all the talk amongst the commentary team.
33:06It was not whether he would move up in weight,
33:09but how soon and how far he would move up in weight.
33:12And so if you're a two-boy, and there's also a difference
33:14between being ready for a title fight generally
33:17and being ready specifically to beat Bam Rodriguez,
33:21there's all kinds of guys that are ready for a title fight.
33:23That's one thing.
33:24Ready to win a title fight, all things being equal, is another thing.
33:28Ready to compete with Bam Rodriguez is another thing.
33:31Ready to beat Bam Rodriguez is something even beyond that.
33:34Well, what we know for sure is that this conveyor belt of exciting talent
33:39at 115, it is still producing.
33:43Ladies and gentlemen, we have the time of 2 minutes 59 seconds
33:48in round number 8.
33:50A referee in charge stops the contest.
33:52He is the winner by way of technical knockout
33:55and still undefeated, Tomoya Tsuboye.
34:09Well, Tomoya Tsuboye, as we mentioned,
34:12called this fight a dry run for future endeavors.
34:16And he just took...
34:18...
