Ronny Chieng tells THR on the 'Unfrosted' red carpet what it means to be here amongst all these comedy legends. Plus, he dishes on Jerry Seinfeld's "natural talent" and talks about how you can't fake stand-up comedy.
00:00What does it mean for you to be here tonight with all of these comedy legends and to be a part of this?
00:05I mean, it's people, you know, this guy's the, Bill Burr's the EP of my special, you know, Seinfeld, I've been watching him since I was a kid, Gaffigan, these are my comedy heroes.
00:16So, it's cool to see them, it's unbelievable to work with them, you know what I mean, to get to work with them.
00:23Like, I didn't even care, I didn't even care how this movie goes, like, I already, I got to be on set with these guys, it's cool, you know, it's cool, yeah.
00:32Jerry has recently said that he feels like stand-up is this enduring medium because it's something you can't fake, what's your take on that?
00:39Yeah, there's a lot, I mean, I'm not going to discourage anything Seinfeld says about comedy, but he's spot on, I mean, I think he said, you can't, you can't, he's right here by the way, you can't fake it, that's true, you can't fake the funk, you know, stand-up comedy is like, it doesn't matter who your father is,
00:53it doesn't matter how much money you have, you know, if you, when you're on stage, you can't fake it, it's you, that's it, you know, and it's also a medium that, like, comedy's always been direct to the fans, so there's no gatekeepers, you know, there's very few gatekeepers.
01:13Obviously, there's gatekeepers to the business side, but to the performance side, there's no gatekeepers, any mentally ill person can go on stage and say whatever they want, and oftentimes they do, there's really no, there's really no filters, you know, so it's really direct to the fans.
01:29What do you think makes Jerry so funny, I know he's right here, so hopefully he's not listening in, but what do you think makes him so funny, and a comedy legend?
01:40Natural talent, and he, his work ethic, work ethic, that's one thing he taught me was the work ethic is undeniable, that idea of every day you work on it a little bit, work on your craft every single day,
01:54that's, he honestly does that, you know, he's been doing it for so long, hey, you think he needs to do anything anymore?
02:00This guy is set, so him coming out, dude, is for pure love of the game, because he loves doing it, you know what I mean, and I think that's what it takes to be,
02:08to be great at something, right, you gotta, you gotta love doing it, and then you gotta keep working at it, right, that's, yeah, so.
02:14Definitely, it was so great talking to you, thank you so much.
