Zach Galifianakis chats with THR at the season four premiere of 'Only Murders in the Building' and jokes about playing a heightened Hollywood version of himself. Plus, he shares his respect for Steve Martin and Martin Short as "American Comedy Gods."
Transcript
00:00So, you played the character that's playing Martin Short's character in this movie.
00:04What was it like working with him on this season?
00:07Have you met that guy? Have you interviewed him?
00:11I have to say, that guy's going to live so long because his inner child has never left him.
00:19He's such a lovely, funny man.
00:23It was one of the nicest, if not the nicest working experience I've had.
00:30What was it like playing a heightened version of yourself?
00:35Well, I haven't seen it, so I don't know.
00:43It's just, there really isn't a Hollywood version of myself.
00:49So, I mean, look at me, I tape my shirts so they fit.
00:54So, I'm not, this town is weird.
00:56But, it's funny to play yourself because I don't know if I did it right.
01:03I'm not sure if I got it right, the character, but we'll see.
01:07We'll see.
01:08What made you want to join the cast of this show and be a part of it?
01:10Someone told me that it will be so much fun to work on because they had already worked on it.
01:19A friend of mine had worked on it.
01:20And they said it will be such a great job, you will not want to leave.
01:25And that person was right.
01:27And it was just, I heard it was a lot of fun.
01:30And also, Martin Short and Steve Martin are in the show.
01:33So, to say legends is not even quite right.
01:41They're just, they're American comedy gods.
01:44And it's just really kind of interesting to be in their wake.
01:48What was it like watching those two legends work on set?
01:52Boring.
01:52No.
01:53It was good.
01:54It was fun.
01:55It was, it's fun to hear them talk back and forth and their banter to each other.
02:01Which is basically their stage show, but it continues off stage, which is kind of fun.
02:08This is kind of a left field question, but I was reading an article that suggested you as someone who could play J.D. Vance on Saturday Night Live.
02:15Is that something you'd ever want to do or would you not want to weigh into that?
02:18I think you're confused.
02:20I used to be a guy named D.J. Vance in my old spinning days back in New York.
02:27No, I, my sister texted me something about that.
02:30I, I mean, I think it's just because I have a beard, you know.
02:35And you're a funny guy.
02:36Just like J.D. Vance.
02:38Hilarious, just like J.D.
