Transcript
00:00I am profoundly grateful for the lessons that I have learned from Meredith Grey.
00:06ABC and Shondaland's Grey's Anatomy is renowned for killing off cast members,
00:10making fans cry their eyes out and constantly reinventing itself.
00:14The show's 300th episode aired Thursday and The Hollywood Reporter spoke to writer
00:18and co-showrunner Krista Vernoff about season 14's nostalgic feel, her approach to the
00:23landmark episode and how next week's mid-season finale will feel like a big event.
00:28Spoiler alert ahead for Grey's Anatomy's 300th episode.
00:31The episode was a nod to the show's gone-but-never-forgotten original stars, including
00:35Izzy, played by Katherine Heigl, George, who was portrayed by T.R. Knight, and of course
00:40Sandra Oh's Christina. The episode saw its central character, Ellen Pompeo's Meredith,
00:44take home the Harper Avery Award, the show's fictional prize at her late mother
00:48Ellis, played by Kate Burton, who had a cameo, won twice.
00:52Vernoff, who returned to Grey's Anatomy after a six-year absence, revealed that she wanted
00:56to bring back one of the original series regulars, but wouldn't say whom, and also bring back
01:00the feel of the show's early days and create the feeling that a clip show would produce
01:04without actually using clips.
01:06The 300th episode was designed as nostalgia, Vernoff said.
01:09When I approach a script and think about the history of the character, the first place I go
01:13is to the years that I wrote. That's the nature of the beast.
01:16THR asked Vernoff what inspired her to make the homage to the past in the 300th episode, and she
01:20described the process as more like a hailstorm instead of a lightning bolt.
01:24We were talking about, can we get one of the originals? That's obviously where you start,
01:27she elaborated. Well, no you can't. You try, and you can't, and there are a million reasons
01:32why you can't. So, you move on. Then it becomes a conversation of how do we get the feeling of a
01:36visit from one of the originals without a visit from the originals? Referencing the Izzy,
01:41George and Christina look-alikes in the episode, Vernoff explained,
01:44Off her conversation with Rhymes about finding a way to achieve the clip show feeling, Vernoff said,
02:02Grace fans will be well aware that the show's mid-season finales always feature huge events,
02:13and next week's episode will be no different. Says Vernoff,
02:16Executive producer Bill Harper pitched me that episode as a mid-season finale, and my first
02:20reaction was, don't we do a giant event of some sort? And this is a giant event. The consequences
02:26are dire. It's an edge-of-your-seat action movie of a Grey's Anatomy episode.
02:30Grey's Anatomy airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on ABC.
