Former President Milorad Dodik cast his vote in Republika Srpska’s snap presidential election, vowing that the people will “defeat” those seeking to undermine the Serb-majority entity.
The vote comes after Dodik’s mandate was annulled following a court ruling, sparking a tightly contested race between Dodik-backed Sinisa Karan and opposition candidate Branko Blanusa. Dodik accused Bosniak parties and international overseer Christian Schmidt of organizing the election against him.
With over 1.2 million voters called to the polls, the election outcome will determine the remainder of Dodik’s term until October 2026. Candidates emphasized the importance of peaceful, democratic processes, with both Karan and Blanusa highlighting stability and strengthening Republika Srpska’s institutions. The result is expected to be close, reflecting deep political tensions in the region.
