00:00:00Laboratory for a very thorough test of your water and as you can see here
00:00:06this is actually a warning. Health risk exists. I left here a few years ago
00:00:15thinking we were heroes and now we find out today I was wrong. In the rugged
00:00:24Wyoming Hill Country... We've got threats coming from everywhere. The Black
00:00:28Family's rescue two years ago was a story of triumph... That water is coming from the well.
00:00:34...over tragedy... It's the craziest thing I've ever heard on any home set.
00:00:40...but in the past year... Oh my gosh this is from hail? Yeah. No way.
00:00:44...catastrophic weather, crumbling infrastructure... It started as freezing rain and the next thing you knew the coop collapsed.
00:00:52...and a life-threatening water mystery... We can't use it in the house or for ourselves at all.
00:00:57...have overwhelmed the family and wiped out their food supply.
00:01:01That's not something I want for my family.
00:01:03I'd like to feel like I'm not just trying to survive through it anymore.
00:01:08Now with Winter once again promising destructive conditions, Marty responds to their new cry for help.
00:01:16The pendulum is swinging. We're running out of time.
00:01:19To put the Black Family back on the path to success before it's too late.
00:01:25And now run!
00:01:27The fact that you killed somebody.
00:01:29Coming in, look out!
00:01:31When you drive around in rural Wyoming, you're reminded that this is the least populated state.
00:01:46First time I ever drove down this road right here, it was in the middle of summer.
00:01:52Right now, winter's coming.
00:02:02I'm Jody Lundgren.
00:02:03I'm Jamie Black.
00:02:04We live here in Black Hills of Wyoming with Jody's sister and our two kids.
00:02:10We inherited this place in 2006.
00:02:15The original dream for this property that my parents had was to be self-sufficient and be able to take care of themselves.
00:02:23But my parents passed away before they were able to finish.
00:02:26It was devastating for a while.
00:02:31I mean, we really wanted it to work and it just, we weren't seeing a way.
00:02:35You know, and then the Rainies visited that first time and we got our footing.
00:02:41And with that, I was able to attack this homestead with a new passion.
00:02:50I was able to achieve things that I had just dreamt about previously.
00:02:57We've done some landscaping, some permacultural swales.
00:03:02We've been able to add more livestock and infrastructure.
00:03:06We've been able to be a part of our community and sell our goods through the farmer's market to our community members.
00:03:13But despite their successes, weather conditions have become more extreme than they've prepared for each year.
00:03:22And the Blacks have struggled to adapt.
00:03:27In the winter, we can get 48 inches of snow and 70 mile per hour gusts.
00:03:34The hail has been a huge problem that we really didn't anticipate.
00:03:38When the hail storm wiped out our garden, we were left with Misty's greenhouse as our primary source.
00:03:46It was hard to feed the entire family on that.
00:03:50You know, there's just so many threats.
00:03:53Even just the other day, we had a day-long rain event in mid-November and my ducks were out in it all day.
00:04:01And the couple must have been off by themselves and they just, you know, they basically froze.
00:04:06They were too wet and cold.
00:04:11But the family's difficulty producing food is the least of their new problems.
00:04:17I started noticing with the well water that my seedlings weren't growing.
00:04:23And, you know, then I started noticing some livestock digestion issues.
00:04:29It was hard on the confidence because I'm like, other people can do this.
00:04:32I mean, even in Misty's greenhouse, the water's a challenge there.
00:04:37It didn't thrive.
00:04:38It wasn't thriving as much as we thought it should be.
00:04:43I mean, at a certain point, ends don't meet.
00:04:46You don't have enough hours in the day to compensate for systems that aren't functioning correctly.
00:04:58Without the ability to safely raise livestock, without the ability to grow crops, you're one step closer to falling out of homesteading.
00:05:09My kids, that's not something I want them to do.
00:05:14It's so important for them to see that it can be done, finally.
00:05:18They'll be adults soon enough and be making decisions about this place.
00:05:22So if we don't, you know, really show it to them now, we don't have much time left.
00:05:27Marty, I could really use your help.
00:05:31Hello.
00:05:34I gotta say, Wyoming homesteaders are very fortunate people.
00:05:39It's beautiful.
00:05:41How long has it been since I've been here?
00:05:43Two years?
00:05:44Yeah, about two years.
00:05:45All right.
00:05:46Well, have they all been good days in the last two years?
00:05:49There's been some challenges.
00:05:51Like what?
00:05:52Um, hailstorms taking out gardens for one.
00:05:56Was it all across Wyoming or just here?
00:05:59You know, out here it's microclimates and you never know if you're going to be in the spot where it's going to dump.
00:06:05A microclimate is a weather condition confined to a relatively small area, ranging from a few square feet to several miles.
00:06:15The unique geological features of the Black Hills, combined with the temperature extremes found in the region, can produce an intense variety of meteorological events such as deadly hailstorms, heavy rain, and even unannounced snowfall.
00:06:33The changes in the last several years have seen increased volatility in conditions, bringing colder winters, devastating storms, and hotter, drier summers.
00:06:48I mean, we've had other hailstorms, but just this most recent summer it knocked our garden out about that time of year where it's too late to start over, so.
00:06:56It can get to be baseball, you know, bigger grapefruit even.
00:06:59It took the leaves off of almost everything.
00:07:01Is it already snowed?
00:07:02Oh yeah.
00:07:03Yes, for sure.
00:07:04We had eight to ten inches of wet heavy stuff.
00:07:06You know, that's the thing for both the livestock and the gardens is you can have snow in June, and we did in May.
00:07:13That May snowstorm took out our hoop coop.
00:07:16It started as freezing rain, so with the coop, it just, that freezing rain stuck and then it started falling off the trees and the next thing you knew the coop collapsed and I had some losses and so we had to totally rebuild that because of the weather.
00:07:29Those animals keep my family alive.
00:07:32To have a hail event or any weather event destroy your garden or lose some livestock, that very potentially could be a meal that one or some of us have to skip and that's, that's not something I'm going to do for my children.
00:07:48So it's, you know, those issues need to be resolved.
00:07:53Well, it's put away for winter for now.
00:07:56Other than that, this is the garden that got beat down and destroyed by the hail storm.
00:08:01And I'm not 100% sure I can show you in Misty's greenhouse that there might be something wrong with that water.
00:08:09There's an awful lot of buildup on those pipes.
00:08:11Copy that.
00:08:12It's getting seedlings started and that made it, you know, that's why you're looking at an empty garden instead of obvious plants in every row.
00:08:19Though the water quality is in question now, two years ago, Misty brought fertilized water to the greenhouse via a special aquaponics system.
00:08:30So aquaponics uses fish waste as fertilizer.
00:08:33I'm just putting my own little homestead twist on that and using ducks for that fertilizer.
00:08:40You have your 16 gallon ish reservoir and this ladder system that's basically feeding itself with this perfect fertilized water.
00:08:48So now we're ready for plants.
00:08:53But since that time, something has changed and the aquaponics system isn't working like it should.
00:09:00Okay. What am I looking at here, please?
00:09:02This is the hydroponic system and so it's a great example of concentrated water.
00:09:12Wow.
00:09:13These were your attempts to start seeds.
00:09:14Right. And so when seedlings get this big and die, it's hard to...
00:09:20That's amazing.
00:09:23Wow. What is this crust on top?
00:09:25Yeah.
00:09:26Yeah, that's whatever is in the water.
00:09:29Did anything ever grow?
00:09:31When we used potable water.
00:09:34Do we have sulfur?
00:09:35Do we have salt?
00:09:36I don't know.
00:09:37So we wanted to test this first.
00:09:39This water problem is still plaguing this homestead.
00:09:43And that's bad news for me.
00:09:51Oh my gosh, this is from Hale?
00:09:52Yeah.
00:09:53No way.
00:09:54Yeah.
00:09:55That was the storm.
00:09:56That's thick.
00:09:57Yeah.
00:09:58That looks dangerous.
00:09:59Has it ever killed an animal here?
00:10:00Chicken, bird, duck?
00:10:01We lost maybe 10 meat birds that couldn't get under anything in town.
00:10:06Wow.
00:10:07That's actually tragic and that's actually very telling.
00:10:10I'm glad you showed me that.
00:10:11Yeah.
00:10:18Do these chickens go to the roost every night?
00:10:20Yep.
00:10:21They are trained.
00:10:22Yes.
00:10:23Why is there an egg right there?
00:10:24And why is there an egg right there?
00:10:26Yes.
00:10:27So we've used different nesting boxes, but because they were in a different area, then we moved
00:10:33them here and we're about to move them over there.
00:10:37Can you show me the nesting box area, whatever the plan is?
00:10:40Yeah.
00:10:41After you, please.
00:10:42Last time I was here in Wyoming, these guys did not have chickens, but they do now because
00:10:48I see eggs all over the place.
00:10:50I think it's time that I get the latest poop on Where's the Coop.
00:10:57So I got enough here to make an omelet.
00:11:00Tell me what I'm looking at right now, please.
00:11:02So we just have these little crates that we put in there.
00:11:07So these are what we're going to be using for nesting boxes.
00:11:11We're going to just put some straw in, but we're kind of waiting to move them over to
00:11:17their new area.
00:11:18Let's go look at the place that you're going to move these, and that's where the ducks
00:11:23are, right?
00:11:24Yep.
00:11:27All right, so what are we looking at here?
00:11:31This was the original hoop coop that Matt built, right?
00:11:36So we moved the ducks over there, extended this all the way out, and then rebuilt this
00:11:41one, which we intend to put our chickens over here.
00:11:44Unaware the homestead fowl would face this level of weather threat when the rainies originally arrived.
00:11:52I'm looking at a bunch of ducks.
00:11:54Yeah.
00:11:55We're mostly relying on the ducks for our meat source.
00:11:59Matt tackled another imminent and grave threat.
00:12:04The predators out here are relentless.
00:12:07In the morning, you'll go out and see that your ducks have half of their head missing.
00:12:13While I'm here, I've got to make sure as much as possible that they're going to be safe.
00:12:18A little good news, a little bad news.
00:12:22Yes, it does seem like Matt's hoop coop did protect the ducks from predators in the summer.
00:12:28But it does seem like the winters in Wyoming have been pretty hard on the chickens and the ducks.
00:12:38We need a better structure to protect them year round.
00:12:42How cold does it get here in Wyoming, this part?
00:12:45Average teens overnight, but we can get 30 below with no wind chill.
00:12:51There's some hard nights where we worry about how many we're going to lose.
00:12:55When's the last time a duck died in this area over here?
00:12:58Just that most recent rain event.
00:13:00It doesn't dry out.
00:13:03Because on bare ground, they'd never get dry.
00:13:06Well, I'll be honest with you, I'm looking at some wet ducks right now.
00:13:12After listening to these homesteaders walking around for a few minutes, I think it's pretty clear that it's kind of all about food.
00:13:20We have to fix the water problems on this property so they can grow food and raise crops.
00:13:26And we also have to make it completely safe for all the livestock here.
00:13:31Otherwise, there's no food and there's no water.
00:13:38Okay, guys.
00:13:39It snowed 10 inches a week ago.
00:13:42Yeah.
00:13:43I don't think we're going to be planting any food while we're here.
00:13:45Right.
00:13:46So what are we going to do?
00:13:47Obviously, the elephant in the room is, what are we going to do with this water?
00:13:51Yeah.
00:13:52Right?
00:13:53That might not be the best for plants and it might not be the best for the animals on the homestead.
00:13:58And the owners of the homestead refuse to drink it.
00:14:01Mm-hmm.
00:14:02So we've got our work cut out for us.
00:14:03Yeah.
00:14:04I learned this from Matt.
00:14:06If chickens are happy, you'll get more eggs.
00:14:09It sounds corny, but it's true.
00:14:12They've got food, water, they're warm, they're safe.
00:14:15You're going to get more egg production.
00:14:17And if we did build a new building on this homestead where the ducks would be warmer, drier, safer, then maybe the chickens could rent a room in that same structure.
00:14:30There's only one word for that building.
00:14:33It's four letters and it starts with a B.
00:14:37What is it?
00:14:38Barn.
00:14:39Barn.
00:14:40Okay.
00:14:41When Marty first presented the barn idea to me, I just, it was like a simple solution that had just never really been addressed.
00:14:51It was exciting and surprising to even consider that.
00:14:56A barn is a major component of infrastructure.
00:14:59If we can do something about this water and be able to use that well fully, like huge, these are huge, huge things for us.
00:15:06This family has a lot of plans.
00:15:09I want to lasso them, rein them in, and have them design a barn.
00:15:16And they're going to draw the plans.
00:15:19It's a little overwhelming, but I trust you.
00:15:22All right.
00:15:23Pick that location.
00:15:29Hold on.
00:15:30You guys, when you set these blocks, get them level.
00:15:32That log over the top, that could kill somebody.
00:15:35So think about how you're bracing them.
00:15:38Coming in.
00:15:39Look out.
00:15:48In the Black Hills of Wyoming, Marty waits for water test results.
00:15:57But time is of the essence.
00:16:00So he, Jamie, and Jessica.
00:16:02Who wants to build a barn?
00:16:04Yeah!
00:16:05I love you!
00:16:06Focus first on a warm, safe home for the animals.
00:16:10Where?
00:16:11Right up here.
00:16:12Right up there.
00:16:13I'll follow you.
00:16:14All right.
00:16:16Winter's right around the corner, and these homesteaders are not prepared.
00:16:20I'm thinking that if all of us put our heads together, we can build a barn and bring multiple animals into it where, I'm confident, even though I'll be gone, those animals can survive and maybe even thrive during a long, cold, windy Wyoming winter.
00:16:41All right, so guys, let's talk a little bit.
00:16:44Why am I standing here, please?
00:16:45I think this is a great spot to build in a bank barn.
00:16:48Lower levels dug in.
00:16:50The earth will keep it warm.
00:16:52A bank barn is traditionally a two-story structure built into a hillside or bank in order to take advantage of the natural landscape for infrastructure, offering door accessibility on two levels.
00:17:07Building into the earth also harnesses geothermal energy that provides natural heat to the structure, which is critical for keeping animals warm in colder climates.
00:17:19All right, I hear everything you're saying.
00:17:23Sure.
00:17:24My main thing is, it's a long ways for power.
00:17:26Yeah.
00:17:27And then water.
00:17:28What are we doing for water?
00:17:29If we build this building, these are the things we've got to figure out.
00:17:33A couple years ago, I was right here in Wyoming trying to get water out of a 1,000-foot-deep well just to the house.
00:17:42But now, we've got to figure out how to get that water safely underground to the barn.
00:17:47That's going to require a trench.
00:17:49At the same time, we're trying to clean up the water for both the house and the barn.
00:17:55If I think about getting this passive heat from the sun on the shortest day of the year, December 21st, so does that mean that we could take out some of these trees right there?
00:18:06Yeah.
00:18:07A few of those trees would be fine.
00:18:08Yeah.
00:18:09Because I'm not going to be happy putting a barn somewhere where I'm going to be in shade in December.
00:18:13And, you know, if their summer runs right down the hill, that's perfect.
00:18:17Bring them up here in the winter, take advantage of the sun and heat, and take them down into the shade in the summertime.
00:18:23You know, when the rainies came, there was such an acute need for what we ended up building and where we ended up building it because of the time of year.
00:18:33And it was built for what we had then.
00:18:36So a winter barn is just an amazing idea to be able to move them up, give release to the summer spaces, and vice versa.
00:18:43We're also talking about moving the chickens.
00:18:46The same thing I saw two years ago.
00:18:49While Marty's goal now is to make sure the family's protein sources get enough sun to survive the winter,
00:18:56their original challenge was the brutal summer when the problem was too much sun.
00:19:02We need to talk.
00:19:03Yeah.
00:19:04I think these ducks are in the wrong spot.
00:19:06Why?
00:19:07They have no shade.
00:19:08Okay.
00:19:09Here's the truth bomb.
00:19:10You ready for it?
00:19:11What's great about that structure right there is you guys built it so it could be moved.
00:19:18Yes.
00:19:19It's two skids and then framed floor.
00:19:21Where the ducks are right now is not safe.
00:19:25They are out in the sun.
00:19:27It's way too hot.
00:19:29Yeah.
00:19:30Let's go.
00:19:31Let's get them cooled down.
00:19:34The best and fastest way to get these ducks moved is to just throw them all in.
00:19:38The duck parlor and move everything over at the same time.
00:19:43Look at them go.
00:19:44There we go.
00:19:45Slow down.
00:19:46Let them go in.
00:19:47Good job.
00:19:48Good job.
00:19:49We'll see you on the other side.
00:19:53It is 105 degrees and inside that parlor it could be 5 to 10 degrees hotter.
00:20:02The only risk that I see and it's a big one is if a strap breaks then you have all these sitting ducks inside a hot box with no pen to go to and that can't happen.
00:20:14Whoa.
00:20:15Moving the chickens.
00:20:16What's your input on that?
00:20:21Not too far away?
00:20:22No.
00:20:23It shouldn't be too far away.
00:20:24I mean the kids walk this the rainy road all the time.
00:20:28It's called the rainy road?
00:20:29Yeah it is.
00:20:30Oh wow.
00:20:31Of course we need the barn on rainy road.
00:20:32Wait a minute.
00:20:33Didn't you work on it too?
00:20:34Yeah.
00:20:35Clint Slash Rainy Road.
00:20:36Clint Slash Rainy Road.
00:20:37What can we say?
00:20:38Oh wait.
00:20:39How can we say Clint first?
00:20:40Oh sorry.
00:20:41Sorry.
00:20:42I'm teasing.
00:20:43The Clint Rainy Road.
00:20:44Okay.
00:20:45Now another thing is well, this is the show.
00:20:46It's a great show.
00:20:49Yes.
00:20:50I'm going to find the show.
00:20:51Let's go.
00:20:52Let's go.
00:20:53Let's go.
00:20:54Let's go.
00:20:55Let's go.
00:20:56Let's go.
00:20:57Let's go.
00:20:58Let's go.
00:20:59Moving the chickens.
00:21:00What's your input on that?
00:21:01No.
00:21:02It shouldn't be too far away.
00:21:03Okay, now another thing do me a favor right now the four of us are gonna stand on the corners
00:21:09Where are the front two corners mom and dad me and you will be on the back?
00:21:14How big can you go come into about 24 20 24 right about there?
00:21:19And then is that don't look at me look at the Sun. Yeah, look at your property. Yeah
00:21:26Like another thing I mean
00:21:29Predators when's the last time you guys saw a bear here two summers ago
00:21:32When's the last time you saw a mountain lion in this area a week ago?
00:21:37When's the last time you saw a coyote or heard one yesterday, so those are all really bad answers
00:21:44Wyoming is home to one of the largest predator populations in all the lower 48 due to its diverse ecosystem
00:21:52In addition to being one of only a handful of states with both grizzlies and black bears
00:21:58The region's wolves mountain lions coyotes weasels venomous snakes and birds of prey such as eagles hawks and owls
00:22:09Leave livestock under constant attack from both land and air
00:22:14Just have to keep that in mind when we build it
00:22:19Yeah, we'll dig this material out we'll broadcast it out across there and double the size of this footprint
00:22:24Okay, okay, but I like your geothermal
00:22:28Idea of robbing some heat from the ground being in the bank
00:22:32But we have to think about predators. We've got to think about water. We got to think about power
00:22:36To protect the black family's livestock from extreme winter weather
00:22:43Marty will first carve the structures foundation into the hillside
00:22:47Making use of the geothermal warmth from the earth
00:22:51Then using timber from the homestead he will build out the exterior framing
00:22:56Making sure to maximize the passive heat from the Sun year-round
00:23:00Then with the black family's input he will build individual holding spaces for all the homestead's livestock
00:23:09Tailor-made for their needs to increase survivability as well as production and
00:23:15Finally he will install a reinforced metal roof to protect against heavy snow and
00:23:22extreme hail storms
00:23:24To know that this barn will be properly insulated and have the ability to take care of my animals all winter and not have to worry about it
00:23:37That's I mean, that's that's amazing. That's much more production that much more
00:23:43Ability to thrive out here
00:23:54Go up there three feet mark mark 20 and here I come. Thank you
00:24:01So Marty
00:24:03Really did throw us a curveball. We had no idea that maybe a barn would be on the table and
00:24:09It's like the perfect thing when Marty explained that and the relationship of that barn and using it in the winter
00:24:16Because we're set up for summer where we are it all made so much sense
00:24:24I'm kind of like you kind of shocked and embarrassed that you didn't think of it
00:24:30But that's what you get out of something like this Marty bringing back his expertise and his perspective
00:24:36Totally unexpected but as soon as he said I'm like that is it that that's totally what we need right now
00:24:42All right, I'm not sure it's been an hour since we talked about build the barn here
00:24:48And that's what got done so far. Yeah stuff can happen, right? Yeah if you have a plan
00:24:57Okay, so on this side is
00:25:00Where we're dreaming big we are excited to add a dairy cow to the farm
00:25:06Okay, hold on you guys are struggling with the animals that you already have
00:25:18I
00:25:20Have you had a chance to look at a few trees you might donate to this barn build on the black family's Wyoming homestead?
00:25:27There's a couple of big ones back in there and they're all within walking distance
00:25:31Marty makes Jamie and Jody the master planners of their re-rescue
00:25:36Okay, you start walking I'll go get us all meet you there sounds good somewhere up on that hill. Yep. You'll see you there. Thanks
00:25:44Where we going right here
00:25:48How many do you need well be nice to have at least four okay, yeah, I got four about this size marked out through here, so that's good news
00:26:01This tree right perfect, I mean I
00:26:06Don't want to cut a tree down, but you have 40 acres help and this tree is going to be put to good use right yeah
00:26:14Let's see
00:26:18I might get cut up so this could be a little dangerous
00:26:21This is one of those trees. You can't predict let's see if it falls straight towards the barn. That'd be
00:26:26Let's work and be that much further
00:26:29Why don't you go over to that next tree and that's probably gonna be safe. Okay, then we'll uh
00:26:35Think about links and things like that. Sure. Okay, everybody happy. Yeah, you sure yeah, all right
00:26:41I'll ask him that in four days oh
00:26:44I would have never suggested that we could build a barn in four days unless I
00:26:53Was standing in the middle of a 40 acre homestead. That's heavily wooded and this one is
00:26:59While marty plans to build using materials found on the homestead
00:27:10One two three four five
00:27:12Two years ago misty turned to materials found off the homestead
00:27:18When it comes to building a greenhouse glass can get expensive so we've scored
00:27:24About 10 doors that obviously need some repurposing
00:27:29But when it comes to free you can't really beat it
00:27:32You know, I definitely love repurposing things. I love the history that's contained in old objects
00:27:38I really like this old firefighter sticker on this door leave it. I'm gonna i'm totally gonna
00:27:45It um, it reminds me of jamie's dad. Oh, yeah
00:27:51Jamie's dad was a fireman after jamie's parents died. I know jamie felt a lot of responsibility to do things right here
00:27:59I know he looked up to his dad a lot. It's pretty cool
00:28:03So we'll kind of we'll leave it on there. We'll make it kind of a centerpiece for jamie
00:28:08This is really crazy. We found all these windows at the salvage yard that matt went to
00:28:13As we're cleaning the windows
00:28:15We find this
00:28:18Oh wow
00:28:20That is
00:28:21It's like your dad wanted to say hi
00:28:23I thought what a sweet reminder of your dad that's touching that's
00:28:28Sorry, no, you're good
00:28:30I wish they were here. I'm sorry. They're not
00:28:35But I know that you guys will be here. I know you have a long long future ahead of you
00:28:40Can't pry me away from here now
00:28:42I know
00:28:51One two three push and now run
00:28:55We're gonna use this log as beams you just saved thousands of dollars. That's awesome
00:29:10Where's Clay? Let's go
00:29:14We'll leave it long. Come on in. We'll grab it
00:29:18Here we go
00:29:19I guess we'll go down further
00:29:21Everyone is going to get a little crazy
00:29:23But you can stay there for now. Where's the next tree? Oh, yeah, let's go
00:29:30My attitudes really changed since the first time that marty was here
00:29:35I
00:29:37Came out from under a shadow, you know boys have a tendency to feel that their fathers are
00:29:44100 feet tall and when I lost him I didn't want to mess with his homestead
00:29:50But it's it's um i'm excited to do what I want to do
00:29:56What clint doesn't know is I got my saw stuck i'm too embarrassed to tell him so when this moves maybe I get it back
00:30:05Everything's fine
00:30:12You'll never know if a tree falls in the forest yeah, and you don't hear it that's because you're not building a barn
00:30:26The pace that everyone's moving that is so incredible you know we went from
00:30:31Find a spot to a couple hours later. We had trees down
00:30:35We had a pad flattened out to grade we had everything we need to go to get a jump start on tomorrow
00:30:41And it was it was only two hours. I can't wait to see what a whole day tomorrow brings
00:30:44It's day two on the black family's homestead and this morning's freeze is a reminder that the wicked wyoming winter
00:31:01Is right around the corner
00:31:06Well, good morning
00:31:08morning, too
00:31:10Building a barn, you know
00:31:13Family and I were up all night trying to decide what kind of footprint
00:31:17We wanted inside the space what
00:31:21We dreamt before we fell asleep all night
00:31:23So it's been
00:31:26It's been pretty amazing
00:31:28Okay, so we have the new area for the ducks and the chickens that'll work on this side is
00:31:38Where we're dreaming big with our future. We are excited to add a dairy cow to the farm
00:31:44Okay, hold on did I hear you say milk cow?
00:31:48Yeah, but it seems like you guys are struggling with the animals that you already have
00:31:55This couple is overwhelmed. I get it
00:31:59At some point these homesteaders need to stop and listen
00:32:04because my job is to
00:32:07Protect both life and property and on this homestead in that order when I hear milk call I think about how much work it is
00:32:17You guys ready for that
00:32:25Nice to see you again
00:32:27You guys are like
00:32:30taller
00:32:31Everything I do isn't for me anymore
00:32:33Gonna have to go down visa for my kids to be the third generation to work this homestead
00:32:42That's what I'm doing this for
00:32:53When I grew up I I had a dairy cow five and six o'clock in the morning milking that cow before I walked believe it or not
00:32:59A mile and a half almost to the bus stop and back every night that was my life
00:33:06So when I hear milk call I think about how much work it is. Yeah
00:33:09You guys ready for that?
00:33:11Yeah
00:33:11Well, we homeschool and it's gonna be a great teaching tool for them and an opportunity to learn
00:33:16Like where their cheese they eat comes from they were excited to start milking years ago at this point
00:33:21Your kids
00:33:21I've been able yeah
00:33:23Obviously last time we were here no one was talking about
00:33:27Bringing a milk cow to the property so this time around
00:33:32Looking at these animals and listening
00:33:35How they're gonna bring more I think we need to build a barn big enough to get the job done
00:33:41All right, so go right to those concrete blocks
00:33:47So look where she's standing me that's 20
00:33:51We just built one of these in georgia and it was really hard in a week a week
00:33:56To build a 24 by 24. Okay, so every foot's gonna count you have a pick a good pick
00:34:01Yeah, we need it
00:34:02We need to pick a couple shovels and then we'll get this to grade and we'll put these four corners in and we'll start building. Okay, thank you
00:34:11I
00:34:13When the rainies first visited they set me up for success and I took that success and I ran with it
00:34:20Unfortunately to have a hail event or any weather event destroy your garden or lose some livestock
00:34:28I can't rely on it to feed my family
00:34:32And I know that Marty's barn is gonna stop what I thought would be inevitable losses if we had a hard winter
00:34:37It's just a great feeling to know that my animals are in a spot that they're safe
00:34:46We can pull it off, but we're gonna need help because we don't have the manpower and I'm only here four days
00:34:54Fortunately
00:34:55Jamie
00:34:56Managed to gather some volunteers. What's going on here? Who who's this?
00:35:01That's the cousin Scott on who Larson Scott Larson, Molly McDowell, Molly
00:35:07Yes, Molly McDowell. That's a good name. My wife's name's Molly. Awesome
00:35:11Never met a Molly. I didn't like
00:35:15What state is number one when it comes to being the least populated boom, Wyoming
00:35:23The good news is we've got a couple extra helpers on this homestead and now it is possible we could build a barn
00:35:34in four days
00:35:36While Marty relies on the help of friends and family for the barn build
00:35:43Two years ago
00:35:45I had something weird happen there. There's there's tight spots
00:35:50Another homestead necessity required some outside assistance
00:35:55At 500 feet there seems to be an obstruction if we can't get a pump down this well
00:36:04Then we're in big trouble
00:36:07And so we've had to tap into the locals
00:36:10That'll work how deep are the wells normally in this area in this general area or anywhere from 80 feet to
00:36:20500 feet
00:36:21I should tell you this a few hundred feet down there was a restriction that
00:36:26Might be a problem if we'd send a pump down there on top of that
00:36:31There's no well log that anybody can find yeah a lot of unknowns on this because it wasn't ever finished
00:36:37Well, you have no idea what you're really doing here
00:36:41You're basically saving a family that has some serious issues trying to carry on their parents dream
00:36:48We know very little about this well
00:36:51I think there's water in there, but we're never gonna know until
00:36:56We drop a well pump down the well casing
00:37:00So we are in your debt
00:37:03I'm proud to help well, what do you say we get started?
00:37:06All I think I need is a ditch for a pitless. Okay. I'll jump in that excavator. I really appreciate it. Yep
00:37:15Who's ready to go to work now with much needed outside help
00:37:20Marty prepares newly felled trees for use as the structure's main supports
00:37:27I'm ready to grab two logs for the front and the log for the top
00:37:31The first job I ever had wasn't choking little logs like this on the olympic peninsula
00:37:39We had trees that were not six feet not eight feet, but up to 12 foot across
00:37:44Then I moved to alaska at the age of 18 and in southeast alaska their trees were 8 and 10 feet as well
00:37:52I've always loved trees
00:37:58I don't like cutting trees, but I do love working with trees
00:38:03Every homestead it seems like we're either
00:38:07Cutting a danger tree and that's how it's done
00:38:10sometimes we're planting trees and
00:38:14Many of those homesteads are saving me money because they have trees this size
00:38:20That we can manage we can maneuver we can use as structural elements in a construction like a barn a pine tree
00:38:30pull barn
00:38:35We're coming in look out
00:38:39So now that i've got the logs ready to stand up it's time to put the black family to work what you got
00:38:46Let's see what you got your building's going to sit on it so get it flat in the bottom
00:38:51Why would we go to all that effort just for a foundation?
00:38:55Well, think about it if it's not done properly the thing will crumble
00:39:04This is the concrete pilaster that they brought out here obviously it was meant to receive
00:39:10A nice little four by four straight from the store
00:39:14That ain't happening out here stores a long ways away and it costs money we got trees
00:39:19So we'll just produce a nice little tenon we'll drop it in this square
00:39:25And it's as simple as making a
00:39:27Square peg going a square hole boom
00:39:30We're going to set it on the square to square and then you're going to hold it up
00:39:40You have to be in there with hands-on okay, it's not that big of a deal now
00:39:44But when we set look behind you yeah that log over the top that could kill somebody
00:39:49So think about how you're bracing them okay
00:39:51Bring him in let's go hold on is there is there a drill in your hand are there screws in your hand is there a two by four brace in your hand
00:40:08Hold on you guys you don't have this you don't have this perfectly level you guys when you set these blocks get them level
00:40:14Level as a some biscuit spin it towards the other way other way, please, okay
00:40:23Come on down quit
00:40:30Okay, i'm cutting loose now listen big guy i would dig a hole for that just kick it in there just so it can't go
00:40:36We're gonna put a thousand pound log on is gonna fall on me or we're good we'll get you
00:41:01We're coming in look out
00:41:07It's gonna fall on me or we're good
00:41:11Whoa
00:41:17Done now we'll see if it'll stay clint see if it'll stay
00:41:22When you're working fast cutting down trees dragging them over to the build site grabbing them with an x
00:41:29Balancing them fitting them in place
00:41:32The margin for error narrows
00:41:36People can get hurt
00:41:39Perfect
00:41:40This family they've been paying attention
00:41:43They are listening and collectively. We are actually building a very solid and precise
00:41:50Post and beam structure
00:41:53All right, that was a really really good work for logs and chainsaws chains bells whistles and yo-yos
00:41:59That said let's we'll drill it put some rebar in it
00:42:03On this homestead we are trying to build a barn in a couple days we're getting there
00:42:10But the pendulum is swinging over into this area that i feel on every homestead
00:42:16We're running out of time we've got to get it finished before winter
00:42:19Let's go pull it left pull your way a little bit
00:42:23Clean it up done. Thank you. Come get another one
00:42:26Well, thanks for helping us with the logging that said when we started
00:42:39I didn't even know we're we were going to talk about bringing a milk cow to the property
00:42:45So right now we're going to need more materials than what are laying around this homestead
00:42:51We're going to need a lot of lumber it seems like doesn't matter if we're in
00:42:56Alaska
00:42:57Texas
00:42:58Wyoming it doesn't matter where we go
00:43:01there's good people and
00:43:04those good people sometimes
00:43:06donate
00:43:09Look around turn around please
00:43:12This south dakota lumber yard donated three loads of lumber i certainly am in
00:43:18Uh appreciation of them helping you which
00:43:23Helps me too so three bunks of building supplies are going to help us build a barn so grateful
00:43:31That's something else. I mean that's
00:43:33Incredible yeah, you know having stuff donated like that is
00:43:39I don't have words
00:43:41I don't have words
00:43:43Jamie's a generous guy with the little that we have so to have other people
00:43:48He's generous to everybody always
00:43:51Well, you know what I was about to say
00:43:54I guess all we would ask is to pay it forward, but I don't need to say it
00:43:58Based on what your wife just said it sounds like you're already that guy you're already those people
00:44:03That was very emotional for us, you know jamie is always giving he's always been generous
00:44:10But we've kind of kept to ourselves a little bit up here. So it's hard to think that anybody knows or cares
00:44:16On that note, thanks to this generous neighbor
00:44:31What's going on here every time I look up there's more people who
00:44:36Wait a minute. I know you guys
00:44:38These are ours
00:44:40How are you?
00:44:41Good nice to see you again
00:44:43How are you you guys are like
00:44:47taller
00:44:50There's a saying and it goes like this a family that plays together stays together
00:44:57Got two people here. We can start laying out an eight-foot wall, please
00:45:01How about this one a family that works together can build a barn in a couple days
00:45:09Doesn't rhyme but
00:45:11Let's get lined up
00:45:17Heading in
00:45:19We're in the groove now line it up with your wall kick it out good job send back a look at it
00:45:24This barn is gonna help with birds in the winter time
00:45:29It makes me sad seeing them all wet and cold in there so i'm excited for them to have a new warm house
00:45:35Ducks are incredibly adaptable birds while wild ducks typically migrate south for the winter
00:45:44Domesticated ducks are uniquely equipped for colder weather with water shedding feathers covering a warming layer of down plumage
00:45:53However, no domestic bird can survive prolonged weather exposure
00:45:59Without the ability to stay dry they risk hypothermia frostbite or even death
00:46:09Is everybody happy so far yeah you see the the beginnings of what could be a cool building yeah, we're getting it so
00:46:17What I thought on day one is what i'm looking at right now
00:46:21We wanted to move to a place where we got sun and here we are back in the street
00:46:26So i'm gonna start right now and let's see if we can get the sun to shine on you guys
00:46:30i'll just cut all the trees that you said to cut and
00:46:34Apparently you've done the math and if you got sun here i'm happy
00:46:37And now the onesies cutting will be for later in the winter yeah, yeah
00:46:57You know before the rainies first visited i was i wasn't in a good place i wasn't
00:47:03I wasn't i wasn't okay from what happened
00:47:08after i lost my parents
00:47:11i
00:47:12wasn't
00:47:14i wasn't prepared to
00:47:16Lead my family in a homestead lifestyle
00:47:19i knew what i wanted
00:47:21It's just every setback was a mountain that i couldn't climb
00:47:25In this stretch jamie picked two spots and put his parents ashes in it
00:47:32So this stretch is super important to us he comes up here like on the anniversary
00:47:39Do you mind if i ask how they passed away um
00:47:44It was a fire and then we found out that it was double suicide
00:47:49And the only thing that they left us like as a message was that they didn't have any hope
00:47:56We think it was the stress of two years of trying to get this place
00:48:00Built just some sort of mental overload
00:48:04Are you kidding me no i'm not at all jane what blames himself for not being here to help them
00:48:11And not knowing what was going on with them that that could happen
00:48:15If you knew what we've been through
00:48:26Just to get here
00:48:29We need to get past this we you know that's why jamie needs to own this and do this
00:48:35That's why it's so important for us
00:48:37Before the rainies came and rescued us it
00:48:43It felt like this was more jamie's parents place still and that jamie couldn't really fully own it like he didn't wasn't giving himself permission
00:48:52It's the craziest thing i've ever heard on any homestead
00:48:56It's not even bad luck it's like
00:48:59Trauma oh my god
00:49:01If you were jamie and jody i couldn't even imagine what that feels like jamie has said
00:49:07That he inherited all of those pressures from his parents
00:49:12Yeah because his parents are here
00:49:15His parents are here these homesteaders out of everyone we've met
00:49:19They might be the ones who need them us most
00:49:22Listen it's really about are you ready to homestead
00:49:30Can we fix the
00:49:32Trauma do you believe in the dream i've seen 40 acre homestead that you own with trees that need to be thinned out
00:49:41That's true
00:49:41This is a proven stove that will hold the fire all night long besides just being a money saver the fact that it's
00:49:48um marty rainey approved makes it a little more confidence in it marty gives fatherly wisdom that i haven't had
00:49:57You know he basically told me that this was my homestead and i mean sure on paper it was but
00:50:05Just to hear somebody else say that like
00:50:08I really appreciated that more than i probably or i know i could have told him especially when he was here the first time
00:50:14Cool thing about cutting firewood it heats you twice
00:50:17That's true once when you're cutting it
00:50:20I look forward to chopping wood i chopped wood as a kid
00:50:32You know i'm older and with that everything i do isn't for me anymore
00:50:39For my kids to be the third generation in the future to work this homestead
00:50:49That's what i'm doing this for i'm you know
00:50:53Now i'm trying to get them a leg up so they can go further than i ever have or anybody has on this land especially
00:51:01You guys got sun yeah
00:51:05i think it looks pretty good
00:51:09Good morning everyone
00:51:14Um i am so spent
00:51:17i'm so
00:51:19Dizzied
00:51:20By what's happened the last few days
00:51:23i am so grateful to have been able to spend so much more time with marty and work with him
00:51:27i'm so thankful to our friends and family molly and scott that came out so much has been done but there's so much left to finish so
00:51:35i'm also incredibly nervous i haven't heard a whole lot about
00:51:39What we're doing in terms of water treatment our water is not great for a lot of things but
00:51:47i'm hoping that we've got a solution see where we're at and know what we're doing with that too so
00:51:53We went to a bona fide laboratory for a very thorough test of your water
00:52:02And as you can see here there's some good news right yeah arsenic barium cadmium
00:52:09Looks fine right awesome lead mercury that would be bad in your water
00:52:14But you can see it's satisfactory right and then we come to a selenium a mineral and look at this down here
00:52:22This is actually a warning
00:52:25Health risk exists
00:52:28The short version goes like this water in its purest form is soft
00:52:35But once it enters the water cycle
00:52:38It picks up minerals making it hard it's not safe to drink
00:52:43It's not safe to put on your plants and it's not safe to feed to your ducks and chickens
00:52:51Health risk exists consider water treatment and or alternative water sources
00:53:11Side effects of this would be your animals maybe having
00:53:15Stomach issues even humans but quite frankly
00:53:18Wyoming is famous for many natural wonders like the red rocks of seminole the devil's tower and yellowstone national park
00:53:30But these surface level geological features are evidence of some of the most mineral rich and varied soil in the united states
00:53:40While consuming most minerals can be beneficial in moderation
00:53:43Excessively high levels of some like iron calcium and selenium can wreak havoc on crops livestock and even humans
00:53:53Leading to muscle spasms nausea
00:53:56Respiratory malfunction and in extreme cases heart and kidney failure
00:54:03Now we know what we're dealing with yeah
00:54:05I showed up here a few years ago thinking we were heroes we we got water out of a well that was drilled 20 years ago
00:54:17Last time I was here. I thought you know, it was a good day. We drove away. I drank the water. It looked clear to me
00:54:23Yeah, but two years later. We're seeing the ducks might even
00:54:26uh have symptoms yeah from the
00:54:29uh
00:54:31Frankly contaminants or too high of certain minerals in the water and we can't use it in the house or for ourselves at all
00:54:39That's yours. That's your water. The question is what are we going to do about it?
00:54:43We're going to have to in very limited time see if we can address that problem
00:54:47I don't like the well results and
00:55:01We we got to change that and
00:55:05I trust marty and this crew to help me figure out a solution
00:55:12Otherwise
00:55:13Night's one on the negative. I think we can get it done
00:55:17It looks like you have the trimmers now
00:55:21We'll put the the sill plates and cripples for our
00:55:24Two windows and this wall is close to being done. I like it
00:55:28While marty works on a solution for the homestead's tainted water supply never have your hand over here
00:55:36Construction must continue on the all-in-one barn have it away
00:55:41I'm looking at the scope of work on this homestead
00:55:44If we're going to get some of this other work done, we might have to
00:55:48Teach that next generation of homesteaders
00:55:52i.e
00:55:53Their children notice on my hands not right here. Yeah, bam
00:55:57It's back here because I've nailed myself before and I remember it
00:56:02Guess where I was I was on the arctic ocean
00:56:06In the oil fields middle of winter
00:56:07I walked up to a guy that was six foot seven
00:56:12A superintendent and I said hey, I got a little problem
00:56:16There was this much of a nail sticking out he thought I was joking
00:56:20But when he realized that I'd taken a nail
00:56:24That long bam shot it into that hand the six foot six man fainted
00:56:31You'll only do it once. Yeah, are you gonna nail I wanted I like your style
00:56:39Here we go
00:56:41This wall is looking good
00:56:43Just today. I learned with marty how to use a nail gun um that was really fun
00:56:48It's
00:56:49Way bigger of a tool that i'm used to using at most i've used like the drill even yep, you're good
00:56:55Disa was excited to use the nail gun that barn is really gonna when I think about it
00:57:02I mean, it'll benefit me a lot, but it's gonna benefit the kids the most good job. Very good job. Don't nail yourself
00:57:08One day. This is probably gonna be our house. That's all good
00:57:13So it's really helpful and exciting to learn all of these things that are going to be useful in the future
00:57:20Down set one
00:57:23two three
00:57:27While the barn gives the black family new hope and motivation for the future of the homestead
00:57:34Two years ago it was matt's protective shelter design that gave a much-needed boost to jody's sister jessica
00:57:42here we go
00:57:44So we don't really have time to waste okay, we're gonna build a hoop coop real fast okay
00:57:50set it down step on it and then
00:57:53Go up in the middle
00:57:56Just like this it's gonna be great help to have these on our property it's gonna get those ducks some protection
00:58:08All right push it up in the middle
00:58:10Working with the rainies i'm feeling a lot better about what we can accomplish here on the homestead
00:58:19And it gives me hope you know to
00:58:23Keep going and chasing this crazy dream. We've got here
00:58:30There's kind of the square outline of the building is that what we were thinking about it's looking good
00:58:35As the exterior of the barn takes shape
00:58:40marty tasks them with finalizing the interior layout
00:58:44Let's talk dad. What's the plan that's going to make it easier you got it
00:58:48We got to weigh in or agree with dad who probably does know best okay father what do we got all right so
00:58:56We got the stall for maybe a new cow
00:58:59And that's going to be 10 foot from that corner
00:59:00Yep
00:59:01Um, then we got the two runs for you guys for the chickens and ducks
00:59:06And here's your favorite part we're going to make it wide enough that we can actually fit a wheelbarrow
00:59:11Into where we're scooping instead of carrying scoopfuls of manure we'll put it in a wheelbarrow and take it out
00:59:15Way easier
00:59:17Chickens are in the front ducks are in the back, right?
00:59:21Um, these guys are messier
00:59:25And it's further to move the crap
00:59:28Should they be in the front or not you make sense? I like that. I'm just thinking out loud because I've had dogs. I appreciate it. Yeah
00:59:35Marty building in a barn in such a way that
00:59:40Is easy to expand upon and explaining to me and showing me how to expand?
00:59:46Means that he has confidence in me and that
00:59:51How do you not get motivated by that go inside there and see if it's big enough is the door big enough where the where where's the pins go we got to know
01:00:00Marty definitely is giving us the ability to bring more life to this homestead
01:00:05Both in animals, but also just the security of passing this on to the third generation and hopefully the fourth and fifth get it to the stud
01:00:13Okay, bud, you know, we've made so many little buildings
01:00:16But I think when you see a barn on a homestead
01:00:19It's foundational and I think the kids even can sense that like oh, we're this is it where this is we're really doing it
01:00:25I like this guys. I like it
01:00:27On the black family's Wyoming homestead
01:00:38Glenn, let's go
01:00:40The family continues to frame out the walls for the bar
01:00:47But the troubling news of contaminated water hangs over the entire rescue
01:00:54I look at this beautiful 40 acres and it looks like it's a national park
01:00:59But it's one thing to build structures
01:01:01You can move a mountain of dirt, but it really means nothing if there's not one drop of clean water
01:01:08When we got the water test back from the well, we realized the fix would be
01:01:16To install between the well and the water tank at the house a reverse osmosis system
01:01:23Marty's 21st century solution a water purification system between the well and the homestead's main system
01:01:32Reverse osmosis is a process that uses a semi permeable membrane that allows water molecules to travel through while blocking larger
01:01:41Ionic compounds like salts and minerals
01:01:44This will leave the black family with a tank of filtered water ready to use for the main house garden and time willing the all-in-one barn
01:01:56Water comes in from the well
01:01:58Makes its way into the RO system
01:02:01Down into my sister
01:02:06Now i've got to figure out how i'm going to get water 300 feet from the well
01:02:13And how are we going to power this up because we'd have to provide heat
01:02:18Not so much for the chickens, but for those ducks
01:02:21You kids want to be packing water uphill?
01:02:23I will if i have to
01:02:26And that's a great answer by the way i'm impressed that said we put a tape measure on this it's almost 300 feet
01:02:33From here all the way down to your water line
01:02:36And the question on the table is is it worth our while and about all we have left is a day and a half if that
01:02:44We don't have that much time so do you want a water line from the house to the barn yes or no yes
01:02:51Huxley what do you think?
01:02:53Yeah
01:02:53Who will be doing the bulk of the chores?
01:02:56We'll share it
01:02:57Yeah
01:02:57Everybody yeah
01:02:58So hopefully if we do get a water line here it's going to make it easier on everybody isn't that the goal?
01:03:04All right that said you understand we have a
01:03:08Unfinished barn right and so clint's going to be on this till the end
01:03:13Can so i'm losing my right hand man, but i've got my right hand woman
01:03:19Times two times three
01:03:21Show clint exactly where you want it show us the trees that have to come out of the way
01:03:26And we have to get started right this second let's hit it come on come on come on
01:03:33Animals need water so right now we're thinking about digging a water line from the water tank up to the new barn
01:03:40Which is under construction that's going to require a trench deep six seven feet
01:03:45So the water line doesn't freeze it's got to come from the house all the way up to the barn
01:03:50I just try coming through here
01:03:52Yeah, if you can miss that big cedar and the like log that's kind of supporting the road just right down by the text post
01:03:59To protect the water line from the northern wyoming elements
01:04:02Clint will dig a 300 foot long six foot deep trench to access the geothermal warmth beneath the local frost line
01:04:11While strategically avoiding the old growth trees that dot the hillside as well as underground root systems
01:04:19Once done, they will install an auxiliary water pump connecting the homestead's main water storage to the all-in-one barn on the hill
01:04:27I'm a little hesitant because the last time we dug a trench here we unearthed some bigger problems
01:04:37Oh
01:04:52Man what's going on?
01:04:56Yeah
01:04:58You got one big hole there
01:05:06What am I looking at? Looks like a cave
01:05:08Well, I would say you get the sinkhole homestead could fall in that hole
01:05:13It might be an issue
01:05:16We don't know how far back it was
01:05:18Okay, well, I'm gonna crawl in there and scope it out
01:05:23You've got to hook that on
01:05:24Yep
01:05:24You got a flashlight?
01:05:28I'm gonna take it
01:05:29Careful down there
01:05:30And I'm gonna go in there, you think it'll be okay?
01:05:33It's sketchy
01:05:34Huh?
01:05:35Well, we got to find out, Clint
01:05:36We have to, we have to work right there
01:05:38If you don't want to go, I'll go
01:05:40I like this guy
01:05:41Okay, we're going in
01:05:42Ready?
01:05:45Do we have a shovel or a pick?
01:05:47Yeah
01:05:47I want that shovel just in case Marty gets buried
01:05:51You ready?
01:05:52Let's go down slowly
01:05:54Real slow
01:05:59Slow
01:06:00Clint, if I get buried, just follow this yellow strap
01:06:08Slow please
01:06:13Stop
01:06:19Looks like a big washout
01:06:21Take me up, please
01:06:29I've never seen anything like that before
01:06:30Well, it's a good thing it don't go farther down
01:06:34Well, I wouldn't want to be living over that hole
01:06:38Does that mean there's another one?
01:06:39This whole country is littered with caves
01:06:42So, who knows?
01:06:48The extensive caves in the Black Hills remain a threat
01:06:52Digging in the wrong spot could spell disaster for Clint and the homestead
01:06:58It's scary to say, I don't want a Grand Canyon left on my property after everybody has to pack up and leave
01:07:05It's so nerve-wracking
01:07:06It's so nerve-wracking
01:07:07Just watching Clint do what he does in the tight fit to run that line is so amazing to watch
01:07:24Okay, as you can see rocky and almost looks like there's some minerals right here
01:07:32This ditch was all dirt, it was all clay, it was all kind of red rock, if you will
01:07:47almost looks like there's some minerals right here this ditch was all dirt it
01:07:51was all clay it was all kind of red rock if you will schist mica maybe but look
01:07:57at this something over here so as I'm walking down the trench to make sure it's
01:08:01deep enough I look at the walls of the trench I see a white chalky thing
01:08:06bleeding out of the ground what is it selenium in harmony with the water test
01:08:13results I'm hoping that our filtration system ultimately will take care of that
01:08:22problem for this homestead
01:08:36last morning I'm a little wore out I'm a little tired still excited the fact that
01:08:43the kids worked yesterday they got to see how something like that gets built
01:08:48fast after everybody left and it quieted down my son asked me million questions
01:08:55before bed on how what was what how did it work why did it work this has been
01:09:00amazing it's Marty's last day on the black family homestead let's do this get two
01:09:08buys and the screw gun for the back I got it grab another one as he and the
01:09:13family charged forward installing rafters to support a reinforced metal roof
01:09:19designed to withstand extreme hailfall it's gonna have to go down visa you're
01:09:27gonna have to push it way down babe seeing the kids out there working with
01:09:30everybody was so cool I mean I I know what my children are capable of they may
01:09:38not know yet but it's good to see them be excited and look forward to this build
01:09:43and what it's gonna do for our family and animals hi do you have a 21 and a half
01:09:48inch block in place for them to see all of that activity and the trees coming in
01:09:52and the logs coming in something they've never experienced so it was super fun I
01:09:57guess let's just lay these three that's gonna be two that's gonna be eight feet
01:10:02we're gonna be halfway there so let's go if it wasn't for the new barn we'd still
01:10:08be dealing with the survival what what was looking to be another winter of hard
01:10:13challenges to do right by your animals and your family is now there's a whole
01:10:17new opportunity to learn what we can be doing here in winter and how how a
01:10:22better space functions all right everybody happy or sad happy happy happy joy joy
01:10:29good how's it going you're amazing I love it I mean look at this
01:10:38frost is like five or six you've got a seven and eight foot deep stretch good
01:10:44job time to drop in the wire not only did we go the extra mile get water to this
01:10:50barn but we're also taking power so we'll probably have a 30 amp breaker at
01:10:55the house we've got some 10 amp wire we're running it 250 feet these guys are
01:11:01gonna have water they're gonna have power they could heat this building this is
01:11:05probably the most significant building on this homestead a couple years ago I met
01:11:11the black family they had no water but they had a well the mission get the water
01:11:16from that well to a tank near their house two years later here we are building
01:11:22another structure a long ways from the house digging a trench and trying to get
01:11:27that same water all the way up to a new barn it's like deja vu all over it
01:11:36okay you guys over here family over here please quit bring that hose this homestead is the one where
01:11:46the water issue is been going on for a long time we relate to people that have water problems trust me
01:11:54so is the well hopeless
01:11:57do you hear anything
01:12:01I hear something
01:12:06it's coming watch out
01:12:08so that water's coming from your well
01:12:15that's from our well yeah that's our well and
01:12:21shut up
01:12:24are you being serious I don't even know what's happening
01:12:26this is our well
01:12:27don't waste it come here get over here quick dad get over here
01:12:31I'll try
01:12:31don't waste it
01:12:35that's that 900 foot well
01:12:40I don't know what I'm feeling like this is a I don't think I've ever felt something like this
01:12:48before honestly like I can't I can't even put it into words we don't have to worry about this
01:12:55anymore we can do so much more that we haven't been able to do because this has been a fight always
01:13:01almost 20 years I didn't think I'd ever see water come out there we get to benefit from it finally and
01:13:09not just be tortured by it we're free you know that's crazy what would your mom and dad say if
01:13:17they were standing right here right now and saw this I think they'd be just as speechless I think
01:13:22they'd have a hard time thinking you just like I am I wish they could have stayed here to see this
01:13:27tomorrow is a brand new day and a super bright future for this beautiful family as of tonight you have
01:13:37water
01:13:40for the first time ever dad wait spider spider
01:13:44okay I got myself no I got a question for you did you ever
01:14:01think you'd have a barn on this 40 acre homestead I was kind of giving up on the hope did you ever
01:14:06think you'd have potential water going to that definitely not now did you ever think you'd have
01:14:11potential power not anytime soon that's for sure if we uh stay busy keep working it's possible that we
01:14:19can throw a light switch on in this place before we leave okay make sure there's enough wire that'll
01:14:22reach that okay okay thank you very much looking good so we're gonna play one hand of blackjack now
01:14:37there's no way we're gonna play blackjack a stone's throw from Deadwood unless everyone looks apart so
01:14:43there's a hat for you if you're inclined first I'm gonna show you a trick Huxley pick a card any card
01:14:51any card good one okay show it to the fam I'll be over here are you done put that card on top the deck
01:14:59okay now watch that card really close now your card went through the deck through the table it's in
01:15:11my hand right now but we're not done because now the cards back up through the table back up through
01:15:20the deck and family is that your card yeah that was amazing get some screws in that it's gonna be
01:15:38holding stuff up in the black hills of Wyoming come on in the water's fine Marty and the family race the
01:15:46sun to finish the all-in-one barn designed to protect the homestead's livestock through increasingly
01:15:53deadly winters trying to build a barn in four days isn't for everybody the window of opportunity to
01:16:01finish this before winter is closing I'll take the nail gun please so we have dug the trench we threw in a
01:16:12water line we also threw in an electrical line backfilled it and there's power and water from
01:16:19the house to the barn but it's getting dark and the barn's not finished I'm gonna try to squeeze a
01:16:26little bit more out of this homesteading family and if I can we will take this homestead out of the red
01:16:33with the help of the box you know the short duration of this visit from Marty is a little concerning but
01:16:45at the same time one in the bottom family bring a door over that excitement and the desire is there
01:16:53we're really willing to work you got a screw on you I got screws on me where's the other window
01:17:03it's money I gotta do we have to do one more thing with a ladder right over the door you guys I gotta
01:17:15come in one up like you stop
01:17:30Wow!
01:17:36Here's your marker.
01:17:38You guys just go all the way across it.
01:17:39The tank's done.
01:17:40Here I come.
01:17:44Click!
01:18:00How's the doors fit?
01:18:04Good.
01:18:05Nice?
01:18:06That feels good.
01:18:07Okay.
01:18:08Come on, guys.
01:18:09Now, is this the wide entry you wanted?
01:18:12Oh, yeah.
01:18:13Yes.
01:18:14Okay.
01:18:16What's going to happen over here someday?
01:18:18Over here is our new dairy stall for a new cow.
01:18:23We've got to talk about a couple things.
01:18:25How deep does the snow get here?
01:18:27Depends.
01:18:28Three, four feet.
01:18:29Okay.
01:18:30Look up.
01:18:31Do you think that that roof will hold the snow?
01:18:33Yeah.
01:18:34Yeah.
01:18:35We've left you a lot of lumber, and there's room left on those posts on both sides to add more
01:18:422x10s if you think you need them.
01:18:44I also think that the metal roof will shed, so we have that going on.
01:18:50All right, kids.
01:18:51What's going on with the nesting boxes?
01:18:53You tell me, is it easier now?
01:18:55Definitely.
01:18:56Is it cleaner?
01:18:57Yeah.
01:18:58There's a water line to this building.
01:19:01There's a 30 amp wire and breaker box on this building.
01:19:05All the power you'd ever need in a barn is in this building.
01:19:09So, yeah, you're kind of, you're at the cool part.
01:19:13I will tell you this right now, but after watching this family work as hard as they did on their own barn, smiling and fun and together, I don't feel bad at all.
01:19:24We got this for sure.
01:19:26And I believe that.
01:19:27And thank you.
01:19:28Let's look at it from the outside.
01:19:29One more time before it gets too dark to see it.
01:19:33I'm so super proud of everything everybody's learned.
01:19:36Our ability to be flexible and adaptable.
01:19:39At this point, we've really proven it.
01:19:41To see a barn go up that quickly is not anything I've ever experienced.
01:19:46I'm pretty amazed.
01:19:47I'm pretty stunned.
01:19:49It's so transformed.
01:19:50Our land, our structures, and what we're going to be able to do.
01:19:54Look at that building.
01:19:55That's amazing.
01:19:56Look at that building.
01:19:57I'm serious.
01:19:58That's a good building.
01:19:59To be able to have this boost on the homestead just pushes me further towards success, you know?
01:20:08I was worried going into winter that we were going to have some setbacks, maybe some losses.
01:20:12But now, with how much room we have, I can add more livestock, and the way Marty built the barn, I can expand as needed.
01:20:21Four days ago, the Black family had lost all hope, without the skills or resources to adapt to an increasingly volatile climate.
01:20:33The contaminated water supply decimated their garden, and the deadly weather and lack of sufficient shelter picked off their only source of protein.
01:20:44Now, the water well is safely filtered and potable, which will allow the family to resume their gardening.
01:20:54And, with the all-in-one passive and solar heated barn built for expanding livestock, the Black family is primed for a successful future.
01:21:05But even as the sun sets on his final day...
01:21:12Look at this right here. I got a present for you.
01:21:15Marty has one last surprise for the Black family.
01:21:26We went the extra mile and gave it that little special twist and provided a huge catchment tank alongside the barn.
01:21:34Let's wrestle this thing into the position you want.
01:21:37Listen, no legitimate homesteader is ever gonna say no to water.
01:21:53Looks good.
01:21:54It does.
01:21:55In the dark.
01:21:57You know what I'm really happy about, guys?
01:21:59I didn't see you working as a family like this last night.
01:22:02I didn't see that.
01:22:04They're helping themselves advance this whole dream.
01:22:08And I'm like, this is legit.
01:22:10You guys did a lot.
01:22:12That's not something you see every day.
01:22:14So, as parents, they're doing something right, I think.
01:22:17It's a big deal for Marty to tell you that he likes your work ethic.
01:22:21Not just your work ethic, but when the kids come out, you know, he's like, okay, they get it.
01:22:25That's incredibly reassuring.
01:22:28Does this help you?
01:22:30Big time.
01:22:32Help isn't the word for it.
01:22:34I mean, it changes everything.
01:22:36And that's the thing.
01:22:37I don't think we realize a barn is such a big endeavor.
01:22:40We weren't thinking about that.
01:22:42Not just a barn, but a barn with power and water running up to it.
01:22:46The opportunities to do things we haven't done before.
01:22:51Help is not the word.
01:22:53I'm not much of a gambler.
01:22:58I've never gambled in my life.
01:23:00Or have I?
01:23:02For the last four days, I saw a sure bet.
01:23:08This is a blast.
01:23:09Thank you all.
01:23:10Thank you, Marty.
01:23:11And I did go all in on Jamie.
