00:43Secretary of State Marco Rubio told them that the plan was not drafted in the U.S.

00:51The group of Senators, usually critical of President Trump, claimed that they spoke with

00:57Rubio who told them that the 28-point peace plan that President Trump is pushing Kiev to

01:04accept was indeed a Russian wish list and not an actual plan made by the U.S. administration.

01:15Republican Senator Mike Rounds said that Rubio told them that the proposal was actually

01:21a Russian plan, handed over by Moscow envoy Kirill Dmitriev to U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, to which

01:32Trump later agreed to support.

01:36As the controversy escalated, Rubio went into damage control mode.

01:41The Secretary of State issued a statement dismissing the claims made by the Senators.

01:48Rubio said, and I quote,

01:50The peace proposal was authored by the U.S. It is offered as a strong framework for ongoing

01:58negotiations. It is based on input from the Russian side, but it is also based on previous

02:05and ongoing input from Ukraine.

02:08The U.S. peace plan demands that Ukraine give up control of parts of the Donbas region in

02:16eastern Ukraine, reduce the size of its military by half, and also give up long-range weapons

02:24that it has used in the past to target Russian military sites and assets.

02:34Trump has increased the diplomatic pressure on Zelensky, saying he is going to have to approve

02:41it.

02:43Zelensky, on his part, has acknowledged the growing diplomatic pressure on Ukraine, calling

02:49the current moment one of the most difficult.

02:53He said, and I quote,

02:55Ukraine may soon face an extremely difficult choice, either the loss of dignity or the risk

03:02of losing a key partner, either 28 complicated points or the hardest winter yet and the risk

03:11that follow.

03:13While the U.S. proposal could bring an end to the war, many Ukrainians believe that accepting

03:20these terms would hurt their country's future.
