04:20YouTube, streaming, and all of us, Instagram, Twitter,
04:26all of us are already connected.
04:28Now, foreign language,
04:32and foreign movies,
04:34and I think it's not a case.
04:38I think it's a natural day.
04:41So during the Golden Globes, I mentioned the one-inch barrier of subtitles,
04:44but I feel like that was already a little late.
04:47People were already overcoming these barriers through streaming services,
04:51YouTube, social media, and the environment that we currently live in.
04:54I think we are all connected.
04:56So I think naturally we will come to a day when a foreign language film or not,
05:01it doesn't really matter, a foreign language film winning this
05:04won't be much of an issue later on, hopefully.

05:11Congratulations.
05:12I'm Charlie Reeves from Showbiz Express.
05:15This is amazing.
05:17This is history tonight.
05:18This is history not just for the Academy Awards,
05:22but for South Korea.
05:24Can you please talk about that significance?
05:27I'm Chris's president.
05:28But, I think I have an interview.
05:29You're not going to go to the Academy Awards.
05:30You're going to talk to me.
05:32Go to the Academy Awards.
05:33I'm going to get a microphone.
05:35You're going to get to the Academy Award for the Academy Awards.
05:36So coincide in my life in the Academy Awards.
05:37So I'm going to focus on my photo and I've got an interview with you,
05:42and if I haven't been in a movie,
05:44and I'm going to focus on the academy Awards,
05:47it will be Annukai's launch of the Academy Awards.
05:50I'm going to be an interview with the Academy Awards.
05:53I can't even imagine the Korean film is the first time.
05:58So it's the first time a Korean film has been nominated for the Oscars.
06:02So to just win one award would have been a huge celebration.
06:05But to win in four categories, six Oscars in total,
06:08I can't even imagine the atmosphere in Korea right now
06:11and what would happen when we get back.
06:23But I did once imagine what it would mean to win Best Picture.
06:48To win Best Picture means that this film was voted by the members of the Academy,
06:52and I realized that that would signal the beginning of a different kind of change
06:58for international cinema, not just for Korea.
07:01So in that sense, it would have been great to win.
07:04We did win.

07:10Hi there. Congratulations. I'm Ruben De Palos from the Philippines,
07:13Philippine Daily Inquiry in particular.
07:15What historic night.
07:17Four historic events for South Korea
07:19and also for Asian cinema in general.
07:22So, Mr. Joon-ho, can you talk about your early influences,
07:27Asian directors in particular,
07:29who influenced you when you were growing up
07:31and to make you what you are now?
07:33It's quite many.
07:35So, first of all, Kim Gi-young, the Korean big master.
07:39He's a huge master in 1960s and 70s who made The Housemaid.
07:43That movie, the digitally restored by the Martin Scorsese Foundation.
07:48You can find out that movie in the Criterion DVD.
07:51I strongly recommend.
07:52And I'm also strongly inspired by many Japanese directors,
07:56like Imamura Shohei, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, all those masters.
08:00And also, yeah, quite many wonderful Asian directors.
08:04For example, the Taipei New Wave directors, like Hu Shao Shen, Edward Yang.
08:09They made always so beautiful movie, which I admire so much, yeah.

08:17Hi, over here.
08:19Congratulations.
08:20Your win is not just a win for South Korea,
08:22but it's a win for the international films, especially Asian cinema.
08:25My question is, what is your message for the actors of Asian descent
08:29that are based in Hollywood?
08:30Because more than winning an Oscar, more than getting a nomination,
08:33they're just fighting to get more work.
08:35What is your message?
08:36What does this award mean to them?
08:38Yesterday, In This Spirit Award, The Farewell, Lulu Wang, one of best pictures.
08:45So I was so happy with that.
08:47I really love her works.
08:49But I don't think it's necessary to separate all the borders and divisions,
09:02whether it's Asia, Europe, or the US.
09:04If we pursue the beauty of cinema and focus on the individual charms that each piece has, I think then we will naturally overcome all these barriers.
09:23Me and Lulu Wang, we all just make a movie, yeah.
09:30It's all the same, yeah.

09:34Hi, Michael from Nancy Annenberg.
09:36Congratulations on your win.
09:37Congratulations on your win.
09:39Now, seeing the four wins at the Oscars, do you have anything planned?
09:44Because everyone's going to want to do work with you now.
09:47Do you have anything in the future that's going to be planned for international films in Hollywood or anywhere else?
