Oprah Winfrey is opening up about that surprise cameo in 'The Color Purple' and revealing why there aren't others. 00:23who helps young Celie give birth to her second child. Winfrey, who starred alongside Goldberg

00:27in the original as Sophia and is a producer on the new film, told The Hollywood Reporter

00:32in a recent interview, Goldberg was cast in part for fan reaction. She said,

00:36We just thought it was a wonderful easter egg for audiences who have appreciated the film

00:40over the years, for the diehards, and we also thought it was a lovely homage to Whoopi.

00:44Winfrey also received an Oscar nomination for her role in the original and was on set of

00:48the new film. So, why didn't she make a cameo in the remake? She told THR,

00:53Actually, I thought about it. It would have been good in the church scene, but I thought

00:56it would also be distracting when Sophia is getting married that if the old, original Sophia

01:00was just one of the people in the church. And then they were shooting that in the middle of

01:04Georgia when COVID was spreading. Like, okay, well, I ain't sitting in that church all day anyway.

01:09And also, I just think it's more special that it's just Whoopi.

01:122023's The Color Purple was released in theaters on Christmas Day.
