Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is facing a dilemma as the US presents a 28-point peace plan that gives major concessions to Moscow, with a deadline for Kyiv to accept it or potentially risk losing US support. Russian President Vladimir Putin has already backed the plan. But Ukraine and European leaders are trying to come up with an alternative proposal.

00:09The 28-point plan would require Ukraine to hand over unoccupied territory and cede Russian

00:14occupied territory.

00:16Kyiv would also have to reduce its troops and drop its ambitions to join NATO.

00:21It's these terms, which Ukraine has previously said they would not agree to, that have placed

00:25President Volodymyr Zelensky in a difficult position.

00:28Now is one of the most difficult moments in our history.

00:35Now the pressure on Ukraine is one of the most difficult.

00:49Zelensky said his officials are still working to put forward their own peace plan, but it's

00:53unclear if Ukraine will be able to make a proposal in time.

00:56Russian President Vladimir Putin has already backed the deal.

00:59And American President Donald Trump has shown signs that it's an offer Zelensky cannot refuse.

01:05Well, he'll have to like it. And if he doesn't like it, then, you know, they should just keep fighting, I guess.

01:10The suggestion that you made, though, was that if he doesn't accept it, that the U.S. would pull back its support for Ukraine.

01:16Well, at some point, he's going to have to accept something.

01:19European leaders have largely been left out of the U.S.-led negotiations.

01:23But the leaders of the U.K., Germany, and France have reiterated their support for Ukraine's right to defend its sovereignty.

01:29They're expected to discuss an alternative proposal for peace on the sidelines of the G20 summit in South Africa.

01:36As winter nears, a peace deal could be the difference between life and death for thousands of soldiers on both sides.

01:42But a plan that grants Russia key demands at Ukraine's expense would be a bitter pill for Kyiv to swallow.
