It's official: Peter Jackson is working on new 'Lord of the Rings' films for Warner Bros. The news was revealed during Warner Bros. Discovery's first-quarter earnings conference call. CEO David Zaslav said that the company is "now in the early stages of script development" for new 'Lord of the Rings' movies, which he says they "anticipate releasing in 2026" and will "explore storylines yet to be told."

00:11CEO David Zaslav said that the company is now in the early stages of script development for new Lord of the Rings movies,

00:18which he says they anticipate releasing in 2026 and will explore storylines yet to be told.

00:23The first film from New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures has a working title of Lord of the Rings The Hunt for Gollum,

00:29with Andy Serkis set to star in and direct the feature.

00:33According to Zaslav, Peter Jackson and his longtime writing partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens will be involved every step of the way.

00:40The deal covers two films in the franchise.

00:42Jackson, Boyens, and Walsh said in a statement,

01:05Warner Bros. first said it was developing new Lord of the Rings movies a little over a year ago,

01:09cutting a deal with rights holders Embracer Group AB to develop new films based on J.R.R. Tolkien's book series.

01:16Meanwhile, the original film trilogy, which won a slew of Oscars,

01:19will be returning to theaters this summer, remastered and extended.
