00:00Joey McFarland is apologizing after sparking controversy for walking the red carpet at the
00:05Emancipation premiere with the original photo of an enslaved man known as Peter that inspired the
00:11film. In an Instagram post on Sunday, the Oscar-nominated producer offered a lengthy apology
00:17saying,
00:30McFarland went on to say,
00:36I hope my actions don't distract from the film's message, Peter's story, and just how much impact he had on the world.
00:43The producer also noted that it was through his research for the film that he discovered photographs of overlooked and historically important individuals whose stories also needed to be told.
00:53He added,
00:53My plan was always to donate the photographs to the appropriate institution.
00:57In consultation with the community, and I believe there is no better time to begin that process than now.
01:03McFarland faced heavy criticism online from members of the entertainment industry over his decision to show off the photo during the November 30th red carpet premiere of the film.
01:13McFarland told The Hollywood Reporter on the carpet that photos like Peter's have been so poorly curated, preserved, and protected.
01:20And so for the last couple of decades, I have been seeking out and acquiring as many forgotten and lost photos as possible.
