Here's a breakdown revisiting some of the most shocking and tragic character deaths and exits on TV this decade.
Transcript
00:00So we're wrapping up another decade and leaving the 2010s behind. We've had some good
00:04times, we've had some bad times and in the land of television we've had some pretty
00:09heartbreaking moments, especially when it comes to our favorite characters leaving
00:13our favorite shows. So here at THR we're taking you down memory lane and revisiting
00:18some of the most shocking exits and tragic character deaths on TV this decade.
00:30First up we have Sean Bean getting axed literally from Game of Thrones. Of course we all
00:35know HBO's sprawling fantasy drama to bookend its seasons with shocking character deaths.
00:40Its first major moment though came as a shock to almost everyone when in the penultimate
00:44episode of season 1, the series' leading man Sean Bean's Ned Stark was beheaded and setting
00:50the tone for the rest of the series and officially preparing fans to always expect
00:54the unexpected all the way to its bitter end. RIP Khaleesi.
00:58The autopsy found that it wasn't a heart attack. Roseanne OD'd on opioids.
01:05Not possible.
01:06Next we have Roseanne Barr exiting Roseanne. Although her exit wasn't exactly shocking,
01:12following a racist Twitter tirade, ABC axed Barr from her titular series and ended the show
01:17altogether in favor of a Roseanne-less spinoff, The Conners. What was shocking however was that
01:22her character was in fact killed off the show. In the Conners premiere, her death was explained
01:26as an opioid overdose following knee surgery.
01:37Then of course there was Samira Wiley's shocking exit from Orange is the New Black.
01:42At the end of the Netflix original's fourth season, the series said goodbye to one of its
01:46most popular ensemble stars in a move that would leave an indelible impact on the series.
01:51Wiley's character was suffocated by a prison guard, echoing the real-life death of Eric Garner
01:55and sparking a riot that would span all of season five and set up the storyline for its final two seasons.
02:01Wiley spoke to THR of the timely story that touched on racial injustice and the
02:06Black Lives Matter movement saying,
02:08Then we have Patrick J. Adams and Meghan Markle, who left suits for a pretty valid reason I'd say.
02:31Once Markle, the now Duchess of Sussex, began dating Prince Harry, her fate on the series was all but
02:36foretold. But after Markle made it official, her on-screen love made his exit official too.
02:41Both Markle and Adams' characters left the series after more than a hundred episodes and an
02:46on-screen wedding between their characters that aired shortly before Markle's own
02:50real-life nuptials to Prince Harry.
02:51And quite possibly what was the most tragic character exit in the history of television,
03:04or at least in my mind, we have Patrick Dempsey leaving Grey's Anatomy.
03:08Meredith Grey lost her McDreamy when Dempsey's Dr. Derek Shepherd was killed off in the
03:13long-running medical drama in season 11 in an episode written by creator Shonda Rhimes herself.
03:18Although Dempsey had a year left on his reported $400,000 per episode contract at the time of
03:23his departure, he remained in business with ABC Studios with his development deal.
03:27The blow was especially hard for us fans following the departure of Sandra Oh's
03:31Christina Yang at the end of season 10.
03:34She was her person.
03:36You are my person. You will always be my person.
03:40Alright guys, be sure to check out THR's full list of the biggest actor exits and character
03:44debts of the 2010s by heading over to THR.com and until next time for The Hollywood Reporter News,
