Saint-Firmin is a painting by French contemporary artist Christophe Dupety.
The artist is treating, with this series, a very controversial subject: the bullfight. But rather than depicting the confrontation between man and beast, the violence and slaying or the surrounds, Christophe Dupety focuses on the portrayal of the animal itself, which takes centre stage of his composition.
It is the animal’s brute force which fascinates Christophe Dupety and which he skillfully captures in his painting. All the beauty and power of the animal’s movement. A movement full of contortion which the artist reproduces with a single stroke of the brush, excitable and perfectly controlled, resplendent with a multitude of colors.
These ‘flowing’ colours (through the rapid brush stroke drawn over the canvas or paper) are placed over the flatter abstract ones of the background. Amongst the background colours, some suggest the world of bullfighting: the yellow of the arena sand, the pink, red or purple of the bullfighter’s cape…
With this series of contemporary paintings, Christophe Dupety is celebrating life, its wild side, free and untamed, and is offering us a few stills of an animal which is fighting for its life.
