A few weeks after China unveiled one of the world’s most advanced aircraft carriers, Taiwan is giving the public a rare glimpse inside its own navy this weekend. The open-base naval demonstration highlights two of the country's newest warships and the advanced technology and weaponry they carry.

00:00It's all hands on deck on one of Taiwan's newest naval vessels.
00:05On display as part of an open-base event in Kaohsiung,
00:08the country's first domestically-built rescue ship
00:11is equipped with an underwater drone, a dive belt, and a decompression chamber.
00:30But it hasn't all been smooth sailing.
00:34In February, during a training mission, improper handling damaged the ship's propulsion system.
00:40This is the Da Wu, which is open to the public for the very first time.
00:44It entered service last October and is mainly tasked with rescue missions.
00:49But here's another vessel that's also grabbing attention.
00:52The Yushan, it can do rescues as well, but it has a much wider range of capabilities.
00:58The military says it built the Yushan as a long-range amphibious troop ship.
01:03It's designed to take cargo and soldiers from sea to shore after covering long distances.
01:08Be it resupplying Taiwan's outlying islands, humanitarian relief or disaster response,
01:14the vessel has some special features to help it in its role.
01:18The military is showcasing these ships as tensions rise with China, which threatens to take Taiwan by force.
01:31Vessels like these are part of the effort to keep pace using asymmetric solutions that capitalize on Taiwan's geographic strengths.
