00:00I've been with my company now for a good amount of time. I'd say probably about six years now.
00:12Thanks to the amount of time I've put in, I have seniority over the other associates.
00:17Not to mention, I have a lot more training and credentials under my belt than they do.
00:21The company recently picked up a new contract for some kind of big government office building.
00:26Where it's located is rather strange for it to be a government office building.
00:31I won't get into exact locations, but to give you an idea of what the area it's located in looks like,
00:36and what makes it so strange, is that it's located in damn near the middle of nowhere.
00:42It's a giant six-story building surrounded by a giant parking lot.
00:46The parking lot is surrounded by a metal fence that's about ten feet tall.
00:50On the top of the fence is barbed wire.
00:52There's only one way in and one way out in front of the building at the opening of the parking lot
00:58that meets the side road that it's located off of.
01:01The side road is about three miles away from the main road, which leads to the highway.
01:05The fence is completely surrounded by woods.
01:08There are literally no buildings, houses, or any other signs of civilization for miles around.
01:15Due to my seniority, I get to work whatever shifts and days I want.
01:18Typically, I choose to work mornings or evenings, and have weekends or Fridays and Saturdays off.
01:25But unfortunately, after a few months of us being at this new contract,
01:29we started having trouble keeping the overnight people.
01:32During the day, there's usually about three guards working all seven days of the week.
01:37On the overnight shift during the weekdays, there's two guards,
01:40and on the overnight shift during the weekends starting Friday to Sunday, there was only one guard.
01:45I should mention before I go any further that every guard is armed on every shift.
01:51As I said, we're having trouble keeping people on the overnight shift, mainly on the weekend overnight shift.
01:57Because of this, my supervisor asked me if I could help out until they could hire more people
02:01and work some overtime on the weekend overnight shifts.
02:05I could have, and in hindsight, should have said no thanks.
02:08But at the time, I actually needed the extra money because I was getting ready to move to a new apartment soon.
02:13So I went ahead and accepted the extra shifts.
02:17The first couple of weeks were fine.
02:20No issues, nothing strange.
02:22But what happened on the third weekend is what made me regret my decision for the overtime.
02:27It was a Saturday night around 2am.
02:30There was a very bad thunderstorm going on outside.
02:33I was sitting in the camera control room, which is on the top floor.
02:37The control room has a window that oversees the back part of the parking lot.
02:40In the room, there's three large-sized computer screens that show the CCTV live feeds from all the cameras located throughout the building,
02:49as well as the few cameras that are outside in the parking lot and by the entrance-slash-exit of the parking lot.
02:54I was sitting in the control room, doing what I normally was doing while working overnight by myself.
03:00I had the lights off watching movies I previously downloaded on my phone, while also playing games on my Game Boy.
03:06I had been sitting down for a while, and got up to stretch my legs and move around a bit.
03:11I was also starting to feel a little sleepy, and was thinking about going down the hall to the vending machine and grabbing an energy drink.
03:18After I got up and walked around the control room for a bit, stretching my legs,
03:22I went over to the window, peeked through the blinds to look outside.
03:26As I was watching, I was looking at all the heavy wind and rain blowing the random debris around.
03:31I was just about to walk away from the window to grab that energy drink,
03:35when all of a sudden, a flash of lightning lit up the surrounding area past the fence,
03:40and just then, I saw a figure dart from one tree to another that was a good distance from it, I'd say about 20 feet.
03:47I kept my position, looking in that direction through the blinds, waiting for another flash of lightning to see if I could see exactly what it was,
03:54or if my eyes were playing tricks on me.
03:57After a couple of seconds went by, another flash struck.
04:00This time, I didn't see anything near or around the tree that I saw the figure move to.
04:06At that point, I thought clearly my eyes were playing tricks on me, and that it was just me being tired.
04:12I left from the window, and went down the hall, and got the energy drink.
04:16I immediately downed the whole thing, hoping that it would kick in soon.
04:21I was finished with it by the time it took me to walk back to the control room, which wasn't long, only about five minutes.
04:27I got back to the control room, and I immediately noticed that one of the camera feeds had been knocked out on one of the screens.
04:34It was the camera feed to the back part of the parking lot that the window overlooked.
04:39I went over to the window, and looked out the blinds in the direction of the camera.
04:43I spotted it dangling in the wind from its wires from the post that it was on.
04:47I figured the heavy winds must have knocked it off somehow.
04:49I sat back at my desk, and put in my report for the night, and then went back to what I was originally doing.
04:56A few minutes had passed while I was watching a movie on my phone, and I heard the alert sound the system gives when someone is accessing a part of the building that requires a code to be entered on a keypad.
05:06I looked at the main screen, and pulled up the tab that shows the access points of the building.
05:11It showed me the one being accessed was the one in the back of the building by the back parking lot.
05:17At that point, a shiver ran down my spine as I realized someone was outside.
05:21From the shadow figure, to the camera being knocked out, and now to this, the keypad being accessed,
05:27whoever it was had the code because they got in, and the system showed me the green light.
05:31I thought to myself, it couldn't be another worker or security guard.
05:36If it was a worker, we would have a memo telling us who it was and what times they would be here,
05:41as well as what part of the building they would be in.
05:44I knew it wasn't a security guard, because I would have known about that too.
05:48I picked up the phone that was on my desk in an attempt to call the cops, but it was out.
05:53I looked at my phone, and of course, no service.
05:56I figured the best thing to do would be to try to walk around the hallway and try to get service on my phone.
06:02I left out of the control room and into the hallway.
06:06I started walking down the hallway toward the service stairwell while looking at my phone, hoping to get a signal soon.
06:12Just then as I was looking down at my phone, the power was shut off.
06:16I immediately decided, since I was so close to the stairs,
06:19that I was going to run down the stairs to the front lobby and run out the door to my truck.
06:24I got to the stairwell and opened it up.
06:26It was damn near pitch black in there.
06:29I decided to use the darkness to my advantage and walk quietly down the steps.
06:34I figured if this person cut the power, they had to be in the generator room, which was in the basement.
06:39Unfortunately, the basement was the only flight of steps below the lobby where I was headed.
06:44Also, the generator was not too far away from the stairwell that I was in.
06:48I made it down to the fourth floor, and suddenly I heard a door open at the bottom of the stairwell.
06:54I stopped dead in my tracks.
06:56At this point, I knew I was armed, but I was thinking to myself, even though I went through training, I don't think I was ready to shoot anyone.
07:04I was hoping and praying that it wouldn't come to that.
07:06As I was standing there, immersed in my thoughts about my training with my firearm, I started hearing heavy footsteps walking up the stairs.
07:15I wasted no time in coming up with a new plan.
07:18I was going to turn around and walk as quickly and quietly back up the steps as possible to the sixth floor where I came from.
07:25At the top of the steps, a few feet past the door, still in the stairwell, there's a ladder that leads up to the hatch that leads to the roof of the building.
07:32I was going to climb up the ladder to the top just before you have to open the hatch to go any further, and just hide in there in the pitch black darkness until whatever happens next.
07:41I turned around, and just as I did, my gun banged against the metal to the stairwell railing, making a loud clang sound.
07:49As that happened, I froze, and so did the heavy footsteps.
07:54A few seconds had gone by, and then I heard whoever it was running as fast as they could up the steps.
08:00I sprang as fast as I could, running up the steps as if my life depended on it.
08:05As I got to the top of the steps, just before I was about to pass the door I had come from, I had an idea to create a diversion on the fly.
08:12I quickly opened up the door hard and loud, then let go of the handle and let it close and slam on its own.
08:18I continued to run to the ladder and climb up it.
08:22By doing that, I would make it appear that I had run out the door.
08:25With only seconds to spare, I made it up the ladder.
08:29The man, distracted by the door tactic, opened it without even looking in my direction.
08:34He ran into the hall, the heavy door closing behind him.
08:37That's when I saw my chance.
08:39I leapt down from the ladder, only about ten feet high, landing with a loud thud as my feet hit the floor.
08:45I bolted for the stairs.
08:46The man must have heard the sound, because I had barely made it down one flight before I heard the door open again and his footsteps pounding down after me.
08:54Both of us were sprinting as fast as we could.
08:57I managed to stay one floor ahead of him the entire way.
09:01When I reached the lobby, luck was suddenly on my side.
09:05Behind me, I heard a loud crashing noise followed by a cry of pain.
09:09I wasn't certain, but I think the man had tripped and fallen on the stairs.
09:12I wasn't about to wait around to confirm.
09:16I burst through the door, ran straight for the entrance, and used my key to unlock it.
09:21Fortunately, I always parked my truck close by.
09:24With the wind howling and the rain pouring down, I hit the fob to start the engine and unlock the doors as I sprinted across the lot.
09:31I jumped into the truck, threw it in reverse, and just then caught sight of him, dressed all in black, his face covered by a mask and hood, bursting out of the building and charging toward my car.
09:43I slammed the gear into drive and floored it, tires screeching as I tore out of the lot and onto the side road.
09:50It wasn't until I was nearly at the main road that I got a signal on my phone.
09:54I immediately called the police.
09:56They arrived about 15 minutes later, and I followed them back to the building.
10:01I told them everything, filling out reports for both them and my company.
10:05We searched the entire building and surrounding area, but found nothing.
10:09The scariest part came when they checked the stairwell.
10:13Apparently, when the man had fallen, he dropped something.
10:16The police recovered a fully loaded, unregistered, semi-automatic handgun.
10:21To this day, no one knows why someone would have broken into that building.
10:26There was nothing particularly special about it, except that it was government property.
10:30Whatever the case, I'm just thankful that luck was on my side that night.
10:39I used to work nights as a security guard in a medium-sized corporate office building in New Jersey.
10:50And for the most part, the nights were boring, quiet, and uneventful.
10:53Which is why what happened one night has stuck with me so vividly for years.
10:58It started around midnight, after the last employees had left the building and the lobby was empty except for me.
11:05Just me and the glow of the security monitors.
11:07My job was simple.
11:10Check cameras, make a couple of patrol rounds, log any incidents, and mostly just sit and watch for anything unusual.
11:18That night, I was going through my usual routine.
11:21Scanning the screens for the elevators, the hallways, and the underground parking garage.
11:26When I noticed a figure moving between the cars on the lower garage feed.
11:30Which immediately caught my attention because the lot should have been completely empty at this hour.
11:34Only people with 24-hour access could get in.
11:38And I knew no one had it at that moment.
11:41At first, I thought it might have been one of the late-shift IT guys.
11:44Or maybe a cleaning crew member.
11:45But it didn't make sense.
11:47Since cleaning crews had left hours before.
11:49And the guy wasn't carrying any equipment or wearing a uniform.
11:52He was wearing a long, dark coat that looked a little oversized.
11:57And he wasn't heading to any particular car or toward the exit.
12:00He just moved slowly.
12:02Weaving around the rows like he was inspecting the area or making sure no one was around.
12:07And something about the way he moved gave me the chills.
12:09I couldn't put my finger on it.
12:11But it was off.
12:13I called the supervisor and explained what I was seeing.
12:16And he told me to stay at my post and keep an eye on the cameras.
12:19Which I did.
12:20But my gut told me I needed to check it in person.
12:23So I grabbed my flashlight and headed down to the garage.
12:27The elevator ride was long, slow, and every floor that passed seemed to echo in the shaft.
12:33Making me more on edge than I cared to admit.
12:35When the doors opened on the garage level, I scanned the lot with my flashlight.
12:40And it was empty.
12:41Completely quiet.
12:43The kind of quiet that presses against your ears and makes every little creak of the building sound huge.
12:48I called out, hello, security here.
12:51But the echo returned empty.
12:52And I didn't hear any reply.
12:55I walked slowly down the rows of cars.
12:57Shining light into every dark corner.
13:00Every space between vehicles.
13:02But there was nothing there.
13:03Not a single shadow.
13:05Not a single person.
13:07My pulse was racing.
13:09And I started to doubt myself.
13:10Thinking maybe the camera was malfunctioning.
13:12Or maybe it had picked up a shadow that wasn't really there.
13:15So I went back upstairs to the lobby.
13:18Trying to shake it off.
13:19But as soon as I sat back down and looked at the garage feed again.
13:23There he was.
13:24Standing in the exact same spot.
13:26As if he hadn't moved since I'd been there.
13:29And now my stomach dropped.
13:31Because I knew I had just been there.
13:32And there was no way he could have gotten back into the same spot unnoticed.
13:36Unless he had been watching me.
13:38Or worse.
13:39Waiting for me.
13:41I radioed my supervisor again.
13:43Telling him I was going to keep watching the cameras.
13:45And he told me not to approach him unless absolutely necessary.
13:49Which was easier said than done.
13:50Because I couldn't stop staring at him.
13:52And my mind was already running through every possible scenario.
13:55For the next 20 minutes.
13:58I watched him wander slowly toward the stairwell that led to the upper floors.
14:02He moved carefully.
14:04Pausing.
14:04Looking over his shoulder like he was checking for someone.
14:07And then disappeared from the camera just before reaching the door.
14:10Which made my stomach nod.
14:12I checked every other feed.
14:14Hallways.
14:15Elevator lobbies.
14:16Even the rooftop access.
14:18And there was nothing.
14:19No trace of him at all.
14:21Which only made me feel worse.
14:22Because it was impossible for him to vanish that fast.
14:25And it gave me the sinking feeling that he had access to the building somehow.
14:28Or he was hiding in a way that I couldn't see.
14:30I stayed at my desk heart pounding.
14:34Until the elevator dinged and opened in the lobby.
14:37Nobody was inside.
14:38But on the polished floor.
14:40I noticed wet footprints leading from the elevator.
14:42Out into the main lobby.
14:44Bare feet.
14:45Which was wrong on so many levels.
14:47Because it was freezing outside.
14:49And he would have had to take his shoes off just to wander barefoot.
14:52I frozen my tracks.
14:54Realizing that if he was inside the building now.
14:56He could be anywhere.
14:58And every unlocked office or storage room.
14:59Was a potential hiding spot.
15:02I called the local offsite patrol for backup.
15:04And debated locking myself in the lobby.
15:07But something in me told me I needed to do a patrol.
15:10And confirm the situation.
15:11Which in retrospect was probably a mistake.
15:14I took the elevator to the fifth floor.
15:17And started walking the hallway slowly.
15:19Flashlight in hand.
15:20Scanning every office door.
15:22Checking for movement.
15:23Every creak of the building made me jump.
15:26Halfway down the hall.
15:28I saw one of the office doors.
15:29Slightly ajar.
15:30Which shouldn't have been possible.
15:31Because it was always locked at night.
15:34I pushed it open with my flashlight.
15:36Peering inside.
15:37But the room was empty.
15:38Except for a sleeping computer monitor.
15:40And a chair pushed in under the desk.
15:43Nothing else.
15:44I stepped out into the hall again.
15:47And froze.
15:47Because I heard the sound of footsteps.
15:49On the tile behind me.
15:50Not mine.
15:52Heavy.
15:53Wet.
15:53And uneven.
15:54Moving fast towards me.
15:57My heart leapt into my throat.
15:58And I swung my flashlight around the hall.
16:01Catching a glimpse of the dark coat at the end of the hallway.
16:04He wasn't running.
16:05But he was walking fast with a purpose.
16:07And it hit me that he had been following me the entire time.
16:10Hiding just out of sight whenever I checked the cameras.
16:14I bolted.
16:15Sprinting down the hall toward the stairwell.
16:17Barely noticing the handrail slamming against my arm as I rushed past.
16:21The footsteps followed.
16:23Close enough that I could hear them clearly now.
16:25Echoing in the hall.
16:27And I realized.
16:28I had no idea how he had gotten inside.
16:30No idea what he wanted.
16:32And the panic was almost suffocating.
16:34I dove into the stairwell.
16:35Sliding down a few steps.
16:37And slammed the door behind me.
16:39As the footsteps thundered on the floor above.
16:41Then they stopped abruptly.
16:43And I sat there shaking for several minutes.
16:45Trying to catch my breath.
16:46And convincing myself I had imagined it.
16:49But the sound of my own breathing.
16:50And the echo of those steps made me feel insane.
16:54When the patrol finally arrived.
16:56I was pale.
16:57Sweaty.
16:57And trembling.
16:59We walked the building together.
17:00Floor by floor.
17:01Room by room.
17:03And the garage was completely empty.
17:05No sign of the intruder.
17:06No footprints.
17:07Nothing.
17:08And when we checked the cameras.
17:10The footage from the time he appeared.
17:12Had been overridden or corrupted.
17:14Leaving a gap in the recording.
17:15That made my skin crawl even more.
17:18I quit that job within a month.
17:20Partly because of the fear.
17:21And partly because I couldn't handle walking the hallways alone anymore.
17:24Especially when the garage was empty.
17:26And the wind outside made the building creak.
17:29Because every shadow.
17:30And every noise.
17:31Reminded me of him walking behind me.
17:33Just out of sight.
17:34Waiting.
17:35Even years later.
17:37I get anxious in parking garages or office buildings at night.
17:40And I still check over my shoulder more than I should.
17:43Thinking I might see that long coat rounding a corner.
17:46Hearing those wet footsteps behind me again.
17:49And I know that what I experienced wasn't supernatural.
17:52It wasn't a faceless ghost or a phantom.
17:54It was a real person.
17:57A stalker.
17:58And the thought that he had been inside that building following me.
18:01Hiding just out of view.
18:02And that I might never know how he got in or what he wanted.
18:05Is something that still haunts me every time I think about that night.
18:08This happened to me a few days ago.
18:20As a matter of fact.
18:22It was my first night of training as a mobile security guard.
18:25Before I tell you my story.
18:27Just want to clarify that a mobile security guard.
18:29Is primarily a security guard that drives around in the vehicle.
18:32And does site visitation where the client needs security.
18:35In this case.
18:36It's the GTA of Toronto.
18:38But this incident took place at a nearby pharmacy slash medical clinic in Mississauga.
18:43It was my first night as a trainee.
18:46And my supervisor was a nice person.
18:48Showing me around on how to conduct patrols.
18:50Write reports.
18:51Disarm fire alarms.
18:53Etc.
18:54Usually if an alarm occurs.
18:55Dispatch notifies us through the radio.
18:57And asks us to attend the site where the alarm is happening.
19:00However.
19:01We arrived at the medical clinic in Mississauga.
19:03To conduct a regular perimeter patrol.
19:06Which also meant there was no alarm.
19:08We arrived on the site around 1.15 a.m.
19:10To make sure everything was normal.
19:12But as we got out of the vehicle and approached the building.
19:15Something was terribly wrong.
19:17For one.
19:18The underground parking garage was left open.
19:20And two.
19:21The front door of the building was busted open.
19:24My supervisor then said.
19:25What the f***?
19:26How is this possible?
19:27If somebody broke in.
19:28The alarm should be on.
19:30I did not know how to react to this.
19:32As this was my first time at the site.
19:34And according to my supervisor.
19:35This was a new contract that the security company I work for got.
19:39We stepped in the building cautiously.
19:41But all of a sudden.
19:42My supervisor says.
19:44Look at the elevator.
19:45It's going up at different levels.
19:47Sure enough.
19:49He was not kidding.
19:50As the elevator was moving from G1.
19:522.
19:533.
19:53And stopped at level 4.
19:55Which was the very top.
19:56I asked my supervisor.
19:58If he thinks someone was in here.
20:00He immediately nods.
20:01And pulls out his baton.
20:03At that very moment.
20:04I was feeling sick to my stomach.
20:06And started breathing heavily.
20:08At that point.
20:09I hated my job.
20:09And did not want to be there.
20:11We immediately went inside the elevator.
20:13And went straight to the top level.
20:15I was getting a bad feeling.
20:17And some adrenaline was rushing through my body.
20:19Before the elevator door was about to open.
20:22As we were going up each level.
20:24I was thinking to myself.
20:25Like.
20:26What if something happens.
20:27Or whoever this person or thing is.
20:30Might not leave without a fight.
20:31And possibly even charge at us.
20:33As the elevator door opens.
20:35However.
20:36Luckily as we arrived at the 4th floor.
20:38No one was in front of us.
20:40But it was extremely dark.
20:42Therefore.
20:43We turned on the lights.
20:43And started investigating.
20:45The rooms of that floor.
20:47My supervisor told me to stick with him.
20:49As even he was feeling uncomfortable.
20:51He said.
20:52I quote.
20:53Make sure you stick with me.
20:54And get ready to bust this fu-
20:56Luckily no one was there.
20:58So we were very shocked.
20:59And didn't know what was happening.
21:01Until we heard footsteps.
21:02Going down the stairwell.
21:04My supervisor and I.
21:05Were about to open the door to the stairs.
21:07And chase whoever it was inside.
21:10However.
21:10Just then.
21:11The footsteps stopped.
21:13And it was very quiet.
21:13We could only hear each other's breathing.
21:17What my supervisor said next to dispatch.
21:19Is something I will never forget.
21:21And still is rattling around in my head.
21:24A4.
21:25Call C25.
21:26Go ahead.
21:27Dispatch.
21:28We need immediate backup.
21:30Please be advised.
21:31Someone's in the building with us.
21:32And they're hiding downstairs.
21:34Possibly armed.
21:35And waiting for us to come towards them.
21:36So he or they can ambush us.
21:38Dispatch then tells us to stay where we are.
21:41And not approach the suspect.
21:42Or whoever it was downstairs.
21:44As backup will be arriving shortly.
21:46At that point.
21:47My supervisor started panicking.
21:49And it just made the situation even worse.
21:51I mean.
21:52He should be the one to lead.
21:53And not feel worried.
21:54But then again.
21:55I don't blame him.
21:56As this experience was overwhelming.
21:58And horrifying for me.
21:59Now my supervisor is only a couple of years older than me.
22:02So I preferably call him bro.
22:04Instead of sir.
22:05Or whatever.
22:07Bro.
22:07Just don't worry.
22:08I'm sure backup will be arriving shortly.
22:10I told him.
22:11You might be wondering.
22:12Why we could not hit the exit.
22:14And run for it.
22:15Well you see.
22:16The suspect is on the ground floor.
22:18Which means he could be anywhere.
22:20So with the elevator making noises.
22:22He or she could be alarmed.
22:24And immediately stand in front of the elevator.
22:26Blocking our way.
22:27The suspect could approach us by coming upstairs.
22:30But I guess that he or they figured we could attack him by surprise.
22:34So maybe that's why he was quietly waiting at the corner for us downstairs.
22:3915 minutes later.
22:40We heard the door open.
22:42It was our senior supervisor.
22:44And his voice echoed out.
22:45Security.
22:46My supervisor radioed him.
22:48And said.
22:48Sir we're upstairs.
22:50Be careful.
22:50There's someone downstairs.
22:52A few minutes later.
22:53The senior supervisor met us upstairs.
22:55And told us to come investigate with him.
22:58Therefore we did.
23:00But we looked everywhere downstairs.
23:01And then each floor.
23:03And found no one.
23:04As we were at the third floor.
23:06Scanning each room and bathroom.
23:08To see if the person was there.
23:09We heard the front door open.
23:11And heard footsteps running outside.
23:13We were not fast enough to see who it was.
23:15Because by the time we got to the ground floor.
23:17The suspect was gone.
23:20Both my supervisor and I were in shock.
23:22Because we looked everywhere.
23:24And did not find anyone.
23:25Either that person was in a very good hiding spot.
23:28Or that medical clinic center was haunted.
23:31I don't think I'll ever know.
23:32But this was by far the most horrific experience of my life.
23:35And coming this weekend.
23:37I'll be there again for site visitation.
23:39But this time alone.
23:41As I'll be trained by then.
23:42As I'll be trained by then.
