00:00Senator Adam Schiff and Congressman Eric Swalwell have at least three things in common.

00:05They're both California Democrats, they played key roles in Donald Trump's first impeachment,

00:10and now they have both been referred to the Justice Department for prosecution for accusations

00:15of mortgage fraud.

00:16Senate Democrats find that suspicious, so they're calling for an independent investigation

00:21into Bill Pulte, the head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, who has sent multiple criminal

00:26referrals to the Department of Justice, all of them regarding Democrats.

00:31FHFA Director Bill Pulte has referred Schiff, Swalwell, Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook,

00:39and New York State Attorney General Letitia James for prosecution on mortgage fraud claims.

00:44So far, only James has been indicted.

00:46Senate Democrats want to know if this is purely political, so they're asking the Government

00:51Accountability Office to investigate because it's independent, unlike the FHFA's

00:56Inspector General's office, where employees have been fired for looking into this.

01:01The senators want to know how Pulte accessed the data, whether he used official FHFA resources

01:06like staff to gather the documents, and if any of the data is privileged.

01:11The senators wrote in their letter to the Government Accountability Office, Mr. Pulte, notably,

01:16is reportedly in contact with President Trump regarding his mortgage fraud investigations, creating

01:21a clear path through which Mr. Pulte could be working with the President to identify and

01:26execute on mortgage fraud investigation targets.

01:28Did the FHFA tell you they were pulling your data at all and inform you as to what they

01:32were doing in any way, shape, or form?

01:34All I know about that is what I read in the paper.

01:37In July, when news of the investigation first came out, Schiff wrote on X,

01:40This baseless attempt at political retribution won't stop me from holding the President accountable.

01:45We spoke with senators about the referrals and whether they believe Pulte's actions are inappropriate.

01:50Here's what they said.

01:51I have mixed feelings.

01:52I think this is a witch hunt, literally, by him, and he's clearly going after the

01:58enemy, quote, enemies of the President, close quote.

02:01On the other hand, in public life, there should be full disclosure.

02:05I think everyone who has been found to allegedly have committed mortgage fraud, Democrats and

02:16Republicans should be prosecuted to the full extent of law.

02:20Reports indicate the investigation into Schiff stalled due to a lack of evidence.

02:24The news about Swalwell's investigation just came out last week.

02:28NBC News says he was referred to the DOJ for mortgage and tax fraud claims.
