Locals relieved after state government investigates lingering stink

A state government inquiry has found foul odours in Ipswich are affecting residents' health, but the stink is not toxic or cancerous. Locals say they're relieved their concerns have finally been recognised.

00:00For Michelle Phillippe, the Swan Bank report has been a long time coming.

00:06It's a lot of stress and anxiety and anger, just with these companies not really caring

00:11what they're doing.

00:12For the past four years, the Ipswich resident has suffered from painful ailments.

00:17I was covered in rashes, I looked like a Burns victim, my eyes were swollen.

00:21She joins thousands of residents who feel relieved after a state government inquiry

00:26found the highly offensive stink has negatively impacted their health and wellbeing.

00:31This report vindicates something that our residents have known for over a decade.

00:36We have had waste industries for a long time who have broken the law for profit.

00:41They have ignored the health of residents, they have thumbed their nose up at the law

00:45and today that stops.

00:46The public health inquiry did not find any evidence of an increased risk of cancer in

00:51the exposed population or that the odours are toxic.

00:55The state government has committed to supporting all eight of the recommendations to reduce

00:59the smell, including prohibiting future residential developments from encroaching within waste facilities

01:05and establishing an inter-department committee.

01:07Importantly, there is a transition plan in place for the composting industry to adopt best

01:12practice odour management.

01:14A dedicated Swan Bank health hotline has also been set up to help residents impacted by the stink.

01:20For many in the area, the results have been vindicating and they are now considering their legal

01:25options.

01:26Not quite over yet, but I have been able to relax a lot more seeing as the odours haven't

01:31been as present in Ripley.
