00:00Trump lies about grocery stores again.
00:03Reviving one of his most unusual talking points,
00:06President Donald Trump is again claiming that grocery shoppers must show identification,
00:10despite years of fact checks proving otherwise.
00:13In 2018 and 2019, Trump was criticized for making similar comments
00:18as he pushed for tougher voter identification measures.
00:21He repeated the claim in 2023 during his presidential run,
00:25then echoed it again as he recently challenged the legitimacy of U.S. elections.
00:30All we want is voter ID.
00:32You go to a grocery store, you have to give ID.
00:35You go to a gas station, you give ID.
00:38Trump said at a breakfast with Republican senators.
00:41People in the United States do not have to show ID
00:43to purchase everyday items like groceries or fuel.
00:47Most grocery stores only check identification for age-restricted items like alcohol or tobacco,
00:52certain over-the-counter medications, and when paying by personal check.
00:56Occasionally, stores may ask for ID for other purposes.
01:01However, these situations are the exception, not the norm.
01:05Despite Trump's statement, grocery shopping in the U.S. generally does not involve presenting identification.
01:11Likewise, millions of people buy gas each day without showing ID,
01:15and many complete the transaction at the pump with no human interaction.
01:18In 2018, after Trump initially claimed that buying groceries requires photo identification,
01:24his press secretary at the time, Sarah Huckabee Sanders,
01:28explained that he was talking about buying beer or wine.
01:31However, within a few months, he clarified that he was referring to buying food,
01:35even mentioning a box of cereal in another interview.
01:38In 2023, he repeated a similar false claim, saying ID is needed if you buy a loaf of bread.
