Sixteen-year-old Abdullahi Ahmad travels 8 kilometers to school in Nigeria on roller skates. That’s because fuel prices have soared and his parents can't afford to pay for transport. But there are risks involved.

Abdullahi Ahmad has found an innovative way to save money on his daily commute to school.

The 16-year-old boy from Kanu, Nigeria, has to travel 8 kilometers each way,

and his solution for how to get there is quite novel.

He goes on rollerblades.

Before, the transport cost for my schooling ranged between 200 to 300 naira, about 15 euro cents.

And suddenly things changed.

It now costs 500 to 600 naira, and my parents could no longer afford it.

That's why I decided to utilize my skating skills as a practical solution.

And I realized it's even easier, because it takes time for me to find a commercial bike.

And that makes me late for school.

Currently, no regulations apply specifically to skaters in Nigeria.

And experts warn skating alongside vehicles on the road can be dangerous.

That makes the challenge even greater for Abdullahi.
