00:00Is Taiwan energy resilient?
00:03A forum in Taipei welcomed German energy policy experts and U.S. defense experts
00:07to discuss weaknesses in the national grid as it faces threats from China.
00:12Of course, nuclear energy is more independent than fossil fuels
00:16for exactly the reason you mentioned.
00:18In the long run, however, you still depend on the suppliers for the nuclear material.
00:24So you gain some independence because you don't need regular supplies,
00:29but the best solution would still be betting on renewable energies.
00:34The panel said a complete phase-out of fossil fuel is needed for Taiwan to survive longer
00:39if a Chinese blockade cuts off its energy supply.
00:42But expert added that it's up to Taiwan's people to decide
00:45if it should bring back nuclear power or invest in renewable energy.
00:50Besides choosing energy sources that would better secure its power supply,
00:53the country also needs to be ready to accept help from other nations.
00:56I fully expect this country, probably led by the United States,
01:03to organize escort convoy to break the blockade
01:08and force China to decide do you want war
01:12or do you allow this convoy to go through.
01:15When they offload the ships, offload the LNG and oil,
01:21and if there isn't a plan to organize it, to receive it, to distribute it,
01:28then it's not helping the people of Taiwan.
01:32Taiwan shut down its last nuclear power plant in May
01:35and voted to stay nuclear-free after a referendum in August.
