Two Active-Duty Personnel and Five Others Charged in Chinese Spy Ring

Two active-duty service members have been indicted for their alleged role in a Chinese spy ring, along with five others. Taiwan's defense minister promised the ministry would continue to investigate such cases. The number of individuals charged with espionage has sharply increased in recent years, doubling between 2023 and 2024.

00:00The government has indicted seven individuals, including one Hong Kong resident, for their roles in an alleged Chinese spying.

00:06This case broke when the military looked into an officer, surname Yang, for suspicious activity.

00:34That led to the discovery of an illegal spy ring and the prosecution of two active military personnel.

00:40Prosecutors say the ring received more than US$350,000 to support the operation.

00:46It comes amid a surge of espionage cases in Taiwan, with 168 prosecuted on espionage charges last year.

00:54That was double the previous year and six times the year before that.
