02:02Here's the putter, Jake Bailey, ready to do the honors.
02:23And we are underway in Foxboro.
02:26Here's Isaiah Rogers to return.
02:29And he returns this to the 22.
02:31Go, let's go!
02:33So the Colts now coming out for their opening drive.
02:37They'll be let out by their 6'5 quarterback out of North Dakota State.
02:42It's Carson Wentz.
02:43And when you look at him, you see that he's got all the tools you want in a quarterback.
02:47The big frame, the quick release, strong arm, has his capability.
02:52The issue sometimes, tries to do too much.
02:55Instead of just taking throws that are available to him,
02:58and occasionally turnovers get him into trouble.
03:00They run on first down, but it only produces a gain of two.
03:05It's second down now.
03:08Certainly a nice job there by the defense rallying to the football and getting him on the ground.
03:12But I think the play gets made by the defensive front.
03:15Because if they can't get upfield, their job is to go ahead and get low,
03:19almost get into a ball sometimes, stack things up, and make it difficult for the runner to find a hole.
03:25Second down, another run with Taylor.
03:30And he's going to be taken down with a marker on the field.
03:34So let's see about the clock.
03:41So this will be accepted as it moves the offense backwards.
03:45Second down, another run with Taylor.
03:51And he'll fight forward to about the 27-yard line.
03:56Just not a whole lot of room to operate there on that carry.
03:59No, not at all.
04:00They did a really nice job staying in their proper places and not allowing any lanes to open up.
04:05Third play here, this opening drive, as they're up against a third and five.
04:12Throwing now is Wentz.
04:15The Pats are going to get there.
04:17Down he goes.
04:19Blowing that play up, there's Henry Anderson.
04:23The defensive line really can't script the start much better.
04:26You get a three and out and a sack.
04:28Yeah, you're exactly right about that.
04:29They kept him short of a first down on first and second down.
04:32And then on third down, they pick up a sack.
04:35What tremendous momentum for them to start this game.
04:44To punt on fourth down, here's Rigoberto Sanchez.
04:48Back deep for the Patriots, Gunnar Olszewski.
04:54Fair catch called for.
04:56No give me in these conditions, but he's able to work this one in.
04:59Outcoming the New England Patriots, led by their 6'5 veteran quarterback, Cam Newton.
05:04And many people are having difficulty pegging exactly what they believe Cam Newton is at this point in his career.
05:11For me, when I see certain days and he's right, he can still be an accurate passer, can still get the ball downfield.
05:17And his running ability, especially inside the 10, still makes him a difficult quarterback to prepare for.
05:22They'll run it here.
05:28This is James White.
05:29And he'll lose yardage on the play back at the 45-yard line.
05:34He'll lose a yard there, and it's second and 11.
05:37I know the speed is the hallmark of today's NFL game, but the key to good rushing defense is still having your linebackers set the edge.
05:44After the loss to start out, here's second and 11.
05:59Out of the gun, Newton.
06:09Can't get away, and he's taken down.
06:12In on the sack, the former Buckeye, Tyquan Lewis.
06:16Two plays so far, a run and a pass attempt, and both have gone backwards.
06:20Probably not how they drew that up.
06:22Not at all.
06:23Looking for a better play coming up on third.
06:38So now after the sack, Cam and the Patriots are going to look up at a third and long.
06:46Operating from the gun, Newton.
06:49He'll let this go deep for Bourne.
06:52And that will be incomplete.
06:55Well, they weren't scared to let it fly, but it falls to the ground and brings up fourth down.
07:00That's an excellent job right there on third down.
07:02Like any defense, you never want to let them get anything started, and that would have been a first down.
07:07Instead, you saw the contact on time, no penalty.
07:11And before this drive could get wings, it's fourth down.
07:15And the putter, Bailey, on now as he sends this one away.
07:19So holding there on the return, and that will back them up to start the next drive.
07:36Yeah, that's a pretty easy call right there, partner.
07:38You know, I think when the officials look in their manual and see the expression, jersey getting pulled, that's a flag coming out every time.
07:45Yeah, this is going to be a Colts first down as the tackle made at about the 38.
07:50Relatively small sample size, but that's his longest run of the first quarter.
07:54Bounced it out to the outside to make it successful.
07:56And to get there, you actually need some help.
07:59It's not just your pure speed getting to the corner, making sure that the blocking is taken care of inside so the pursuit doesn't get you.
08:05And oftentimes, those wide receivers, tight ends that might be flexed out, they've got to control the edge
08:11and make sure no one from the outside can spill the play before he gets there.
08:15So here's a first and ten at the 38.
08:22They run with Taylor.
08:24And he's going to be stopped up quickly here.
08:27Just a yard up to the 39.
08:30Yeah, things were pretty stacked up there in the middle of the line.
08:33A lot of bodies, not much space.
08:35I think ultimately, he was fortunate to get anything out of that run.
08:48On second down, it's Taylor.
08:51And able to get this one all the way up to about the 46-yard line.
08:56And he's able to get most of what he needed on the carry there.
08:59Seven yards on the gain.
09:01And it's third and two now.
09:02They'll try and run for the first with Taylor.
09:18And he will have the first down as he's brought down up near midfield.
09:22Let's go, boys.
09:23Let's go.
09:24I think they like this drive a little bit better there, partner.
09:26Running game helping out, picking up some of the slack.
09:28Because remember, the last drive, they went three and out.
09:44Two first downs have him up near midfield now on first and ten.
09:48Wentz going to give this to Taylor.
09:52And he'll take it across the 50 and into New England territory.
09:57Five yards on the carry.
09:59Good pickup on first down.
10:01This drive is pretty clear.
10:02Almost feels like old school fundamentals, doesn't it?
10:05Want to impose their will on the defense.
10:07What's that, five straight runs?
10:09Yeah, five straight carries to start this drive.
10:11And like you said, the way it's working, they may just stick with it.
10:14On second down now, it's Taylor.
10:18And he'll get it down on the play to the 37.
10:2142 yards rushing now on eight carries for him so far.
10:25And that's a run that will energize an offensive line.
10:27They'll take down one all day long.
10:29Fundamental breakdown by the defense.
10:31You've got to be able to make plays on the edge.
10:33No score after one.
11:02Audi A-Sports.
11:07Start of the second quarter.
11:09And it's the Colts in possession.
11:11As they've got it with a first and ten.
11:19Now they'll throw it.
11:20Wentz.
11:21He shakes him off.
11:23Steps away to his left.
11:25And he'll take this beyond the line of scrimmage as he slides to a hole.
11:29He'll get three yards on the scramble there at second down.
11:33Now how about that play?
11:35He took a possible negative and turned it into positive yardage and slid down to avoid taking a big shot.
11:41Excellent job getting down and avoiding the big hit.
11:44And now he's got him knocking on the door of the red zone.
11:54And now he's got him knocking on the door of the red zone.
12:07All runs on this drive so far.
12:22It's first and ten.
12:28A give for Taylor running right side.
12:32Credit him with a one-yard gain there to make it second and nine.
12:35It's definitely tough to get down.
12:38We just saw him right there.
12:39But how about what we did see?
12:41Pursuit.
12:42Wrap up.
12:43And then the big finish with the tackle.
12:53Here's second and nine.
12:54Just a yard on that last run.
12:59Wentz.
13:00Under pressure and he'll go down.
13:05Sacks back at the 31.
13:08Henry Anderson picks up his second sack of the afternoon.
13:12And that takes a start job.
13:13A good drive.
13:14Quite like a big loss on a sack, does it?
13:16Now they're looking at a third and long.
13:18And suddenly the momentum shifted to the other side of the football.
13:21And old Moe is a very, very fickle man.
13:24Now after the sack, Wentz and the Colts, they're left looking at a third and long.
13:38Now we've got whistles and a flag.
13:40Looked like one of the Colts linemen might have jumped.
13:42And that'll be accepted, of course.
13:47And that moves him back five.
13:50So the false start certainly doesn't help matters as they'll try again now.
13:55Third and long.
13:57Wentz going to throw.
14:00Under pressure and they got to him again.
14:04It's the full of Michigan man, Chase Wittowicz, who gets in there to bring him down.
14:08So, Charles, no turnovers yet for this offense.
14:12But those sacks now, they're starting to pile up.
14:14And one thing usually leads to another because they've got to figure out how the offensive line
14:19and everyone else involved in protection can keep their quarterback upright
14:23and allow him a chance to throw the ball downfield.
14:29Now here's Rigoberto Sanchez as he'll punt it away for the second time.
14:38And you can't do it much better than that.
14:43This ball kicks out of bounds at the four-yard line.
14:47So to play the field position game here is a very nice punt is going to pin him back.
14:51Yeah, it's almost like watching a game of tennis.
14:53Or do you prefer ping pong?
14:54You know, back and forth like that?
14:56That definitely was excellent, wasn't it?
14:57They began with Michel on the ground and a short gain here as he gets it up only to about the six.
15:13Just a yard on the first down carry, so it's second and nine.
15:17That first down play, all you want to do is wedge out any type of space
15:21and try and create enough room that if you have to run the punter out there,
15:25he can successfully complete the punt.
15:26Yeah, didn't get a ton there, but at least some positive yardage.
15:31On second and nine.
15:33Newton looking for White on the deep ball.
15:37And that will be incomplete.
15:40Trying to dial up the long way out there, but it will be third down.
15:43As his old brain remembers, when I see five wide receivers on the field as a defender,
15:48I know the ball is coming out high.
15:50They expected it and got there and popped it free.
15:53After an incomplete pass on second down, that will leave him trying to convert on third and nine.
16:00From the gun, here's Newton.
16:03Hunter Henry brings it in.
16:06And he'll get him down up past the 15-yard line.
16:10We often hear the phrase, sure-handed tight ends,
16:12and he certainly fits into that category.
16:15Plus, he's got a quarterback who knows to look his way when they need a big pickup.
16:19And on this play, he finds it for the first down.
16:22So a little breathing room now.
16:24First and ten at the 17.
16:28They'll fake the handoff.
16:30Now Newton.
16:31And he works his way past the line of scrimmage, and it slides to a hole.
16:39He'll wind up getting right about four there on the scramble, and it's second down.
16:44Two minutes on the clock in what's been a scoreless first half.
16:48A reminder, coming up at halftime, we'll check in with our Jonathan Coachman.
17:02He'll have highlights and analysis of the first half,
17:04and our highlights will likely be on the defensive side of the football here.
17:08Scoreless game.
17:09And he's taken down, but able to slip across the 35.
17:12And that was good protection there.
17:17No, that was great protection there because it allowed him to lock in on his receiver.
17:21Although, I think he was looking for his tight end on the corner right on the right.
17:24Nice connection there for a really nice game.
17:37So from the 36 now, first and ten.
17:39Here's Newton.
17:45Open man is Kendrick Bourne.
17:47Man able to get this one across the 45 before he's brought down.
17:53Now that was pretty.
17:54They executed that curl route versus zone coverage,
17:57and that changes things a little bit because against man,
18:00it's often a tight curl, tight, sharply run route.
18:03Against zone, you're just looking for that open spot, that dead area.
18:06So you may curl it a little bit wider just to get to that place.
18:10And usually a tight window.
18:11He fired a bullet in there for the completion.
18:13And he'll be out just a yard or two, shy of the 30.
18:17Let's make this one simple.
18:19What a catch.
18:21Especially the finishing part of getting his feet inbounds,
18:24toe tapping, and of course, foot dragging.
18:27A little tapestry, if you will.
18:29Oh, I like it.
18:30Throwing again is Newton.
18:49He's got it complete to Aguilar.
18:51And he'll have it in the red zone before he crosses Hober out of bounds.
18:57That was a really nice job there, stretching zone coverage
18:59by running that route deep enough
19:01before breaking it back towards the sideline and being open.
19:05And a precise throw for the reception of the first.
19:08I believe they buzzed down.
19:18They're going to take another look at this play
19:20with all the reviews coming from the replay official
19:22here in the final two minutes of the half.
19:27Did he keep those feet inbounds?
19:29That's the question they've got to decide.
19:32And I've got to say, watching it in real time, it was awfully close.
19:35Yeah, it certainly looked like a heck of a catch
19:37because he didn't appear to bobble it, which could complicate things.
19:41But even with the benefit of replay, that's pretty tight.
19:44Here's the call.
19:46Could we get a touchdown in this first half after all?
19:49It's first and ten.
19:53Newton throwing again.
19:57Completes it to Aguilar.
19:59And he takes it inside to ten to the eight
20:02before he's out of bounds.
20:04A good pick up there.
20:05Eight yards on the first half completion.
20:08One thing you're hoping for when you run drag routes,
20:11you're able to hit a receiver in stride,
20:13and he can pick up a lot of yardage after the catch.
20:16But in this situation, the defense was effective,
20:19able to stop him before you get a good head of steam going.
20:22Off play action.
20:24Newton.
20:24Now the pressure gets there,
20:27and he goes down just inside the 20 at the 19.
20:32Now the Patriots going to use one of their timeouts
20:35as the clock shows 50 seconds to play here in half number one.
20:39So now after the sack,
20:49Cam of the Patriots going to look up at a third and long.
20:54Back to throw.
20:56Newton.
20:57Complete.
20:58Hunter Henry with a grab.
21:00The Colts going to use the first of their timeouts
21:03as they'll stop it with just over 40 seconds to go in the first half.
21:20The Patriots will bring on the field goal unit
21:22from the right hash.
21:23This from 33.
21:24And Folk's kick is good.
21:30And we have action on the scoreboard just before halftime.
21:34It's 3-0.
21:35So a good kick there,
21:37and they put the bow tie on it with three points.
21:39And let's face it, everybody wants a touchdown.
21:41We know that.
21:42But the NFL, defenses are awfully good.
21:44You're not going to score each and every time.
21:46Be able to knock the ball through the post and take the throw.
21:48By the way, I said bow tie.
21:50I meant just bow.
21:51Either way.
21:51Not the tie, but yeah.
21:53Either way.
21:53You got it.
21:54I just went right past it.
22:06Now after the field goal, Bailey will kick it away.
22:12And here's Rodgers to return.
22:15And makes it across the 20
22:17as his guys will set up shop at the 23-yard line.
22:20It's time for our players' spotlight right now
22:24as we get a look at Carson Wentz.
22:26And I guess the question, Charles,
22:27is what's the formula for keeping him better protected?
22:31Because as we see, the protection, it's struggle.
22:33And normally what you get is renewed determination.
22:36When the big guy gets hit,
22:38that usually sparks people.
22:40Hey, we can't let this happen anymore.
22:42They take it personally.
22:43Anyway, he's not supposed to be on the ground.
22:45But that hasn't been the case so far in this game.
22:48So maybe they've got to figure out how do they get rid of the ball faster
22:51to help out the offensive line so he doesn't get hit as much.
22:54And we'll see if they can keep him off the ground now going forward.
22:57And this was a nice example of an offensive coordinator
23:00scheming his guy open, just a little underneath route,
23:04just trying to free up some space.
23:06And it worked awfully well.
23:08Got him not just space,
23:09but plenty of room to run after the catch
23:11to pick up really nice yardage.
23:17On first and 10, here's Wentz.
23:23He can't get him down.
23:24And Wentz going to slide to a stop.
23:27He does have the first down.
23:30Now the Colts going to burn the second of their timeouts
23:33as the clock will stop with 21 seconds to go here in the first half.
23:46This offense finding its legs now.
23:48Here's another first and 10 to throw.
23:52It's Wentz.
23:54They'll drop this down to Taylor.
23:58And the stop here will come at the 38-yard line.
24:02A nine-yard pickup just one yard away
24:04from three consecutive first down plays.
24:07And offensively, they'll take the timeout
24:09with six seconds left in the second quarter.
24:11So on second down, the field goal unit is on here
24:30as they try to get three before half.
24:33This officially a 55-yard attempt.
24:36That's running out of steam, and it won't get there.
24:38He left it just short, no good, and this score will stay right where it is.
24:44The long-distance shot before break comes up empty,
24:47but now Charles flipped the script.
24:49Time for likely one more play as field position becomes an issue.
24:52Yeah, when you talk about field position, remember,
24:55if this kick is missed, the ball comes back to where?
24:57The spot that they snapped it from.
24:59So field position becomes a factor.
25:01I think in this spot, you might also want to think about throwing the Hail Mary.
25:05You know, put the ball up in the air,
25:06maybe you can get six out of it instead of three.
25:08Yeah, see what happens.
25:09And now this throw incomplete,
25:11and that is how this first half will come to an end.
25:15So we've reached halftime here at Gillette Stadium
25:17with the Patriots on top.
25:19As we'll send you down the coast now to Orlando,
25:22that's where we find Jonathan Coachman,
25:24ready with our EA Sports Halftime Report.
25:26Coach.
25:27First, though, a check of the next-gen stats in that first half for the Colts.
25:32And they were able to have a little bit of success on the ground.
25:35The question will be, will they stick with it?
25:37Or will they be throwing more to try and regain this lead?
25:41Meanwhile, for the Patriots,
25:43you get a look at what they were able to do throwing the football.
25:46And whatever they've done, it's worked,
25:48as they have the lead through two quarters of play.
25:51Okay, Coach, thanks as always.
25:52This one's still anyone's game as we welcome you back
25:56for quarter number three.
25:57For quarter number three.
26:26Forecast calling for more of the same.
26:33The rain's set to continue as we are underway in the second half.
26:37On the return is J.J. Taylor.
26:40And he had no room to run as he's tackled down inside the trunk.
26:44The Patriots take it over to start quarter number three.
26:52And they've got the lead.
26:53CD, what do you think the message was at halftime?
26:56I don't think the message was too drastic, I think, at the half,
26:59or that they need to change things too much.
27:01I do think the offensive line could play a little bit better.
27:04I think they'll try and help them out more.
27:06They'll probably keep a tight end in a few more times
27:08and maybe add a running back to the formation
27:10to pick up those pass rushers
27:11because they probably allowed a few too many sacks for comfort
27:14in the first half.
27:16Right now, the story of this game continuing to be the defenses
27:19because the offenses, they're finding it difficult
27:21to establish any rhythm whatsoever.
27:23I like how you come to us in praise of defense, Brandon,
27:27because that's exactly right.
27:29That was an incompletion force there,
27:31but we've seen it throughout this game.
27:32Both of these defense coordinators,
27:34they're a step ahead of their offensive counterparts.
27:37Here's 2nd and 10.
27:47A shotgun snap for Newton.
27:53He'll get that out to the flat to right.
27:56They get 6.
27:57That'll leave them with 3rd and 4.
27:59Caught that look from you there, partner.
28:01I think we're on the same page on that one.
28:03Just his first catch.
28:04I think we both thought he'd be a little more active
28:06in the passing game.
28:08Let's see if that's the start of them trying to get the ball
28:10to him a little bit more here in the 2nd half.
28:18Newton to throw.
28:19He'll lead this one for White.
28:24And he will have a Patriots first down by about 3 yards or so
28:29as they wind up getting 7 there on 3rd and 4.
28:32Another catch for him there on this drive, Brandon,
28:35and it looks like they're going to utilize him out of the backfield
28:37any way they can.
28:38And that time, they pick up a first down.
28:40So now on defense,
28:42do you assign a man to him
28:43and try and cover him before he gets going?
28:49From the 32 now, here's 1st and 10.
28:56Here's Newton.
28:57Being chased out left.
29:04Cam wisely hitting the deck at the end
29:07as he slides and has the 1st as well.
29:11So an instance there of Cam being Cam.
29:14We know he can use his legs.
29:16And with that big body,
29:18it's hard to get him down
29:19even if you get a clear shot on him.
29:21Plus, he moves it a lot faster
29:23than what people think.
29:24And boy, does he have fun playing the game of football.
29:27Still in search of their first touchdown of the game,
29:42but they're on the move.
29:431st and 10.
29:50Now Newton.
29:51And this is incomplete.
29:57They've given up a few first downs on this drive,
30:00but getting the incompletion there,
30:01that should give them something to build on
30:03and maybe turn the tide.
30:04So now 2nd and 10 after the incompletion on 1st down.
30:25To throw is Newton.
30:33And that's complete to the tight end,
30:35Devin Asiassi.
30:37And they'll get him to the ground.
30:38He has another 1st down at the Colts' 36.
30:41I don't know what they talked about at halftime.
30:43Whatever it was, it worked.
30:44They looked like a different team here in the 3rd court.
30:47Yeah, I doubt that there were very many trash cans
30:48that got kicked over that type of a speech.
30:50I think what they did was they analyzed
30:52what worked in the 1st half, what didn't,
30:54and figured out a better game plan.
31:03They'll run with a former member of the Crimson Tide,
31:06Damian Harris.
31:07They'll be brought down on the 30-yard line
31:09after a gain of 6.
31:12Looks to me like maybe there's a little attrition setting in
31:14with this drive.
31:16Because when you see that type of a run,
31:17I get the feeling the defense gets a little bit tired.
31:19And that's the last thing they need,
31:21especially when they look up at the scoreboard.
31:236 yards on that last play.
31:25Here's 2nd and 4.
31:31They stay on the ground.
31:32This time it's Michelle.
31:33And he's dropped just before the line to gain.
31:364-yard pickup leaves him with 3rd and 1.
31:40Well, you certainly have to give a little credit here
31:42because they're playing this game now at their pace.
31:45This is ball control football.
31:48Sustained runs.
31:49Taking their time.
31:51And making it work.
31:52This will be the 8th play of the drive.
31:54And it's 3rd and inches.
31:56And it's Michelle once again.
31:58And he's going to get the 1st down
31:59as they bring him down at the 23.
32:04Well, this has been a long drive.
32:06In fact, it's eating up a good chunk of the 3rd quarter,
32:08which is precisely what you want
32:09when you're playing with the lead.
32:11You control the football.
32:12You control the clock and impose your will on the defense.
32:16Now a 1st down carry.
32:36It's Michelle.
32:36And he'll work this forward for about 3 at 2nd down.
32:40Some of the most unselfish players on any football team.
32:45Defensive tackles.
32:46Because we ask them to just eat up blocks,
32:48allow other people to make tackles.
32:50But when he can make a play himself,
32:52as we just saw there,
32:54that's a big day.
32:552nd and 6.
32:57No, scratch that.
32:582nd and 7.
32:59On the handoff, it's Michelle.
33:07Calling a gain of a couple,
33:08and that's going to leave him with a 3rd and about 5.
33:11Early downstuffs have put this offense in a precarious position.
33:14We know they're securing the point of attack,
33:15especially against the big-body guys in the middle of this day.
33:18It's got to be priority 1.
33:20Newton now to throw.
33:31And a throw there.
33:32Going to be incomplete.
33:33They converted twice on 3rd down that drive already,
33:36but couldn't make it a 3rd.
33:37We always talk about in-game adjustments.
33:40How about what the defense did there,
33:41able to shut them down on that attempt?
33:43So out comes the field goal team now for the 2nd time here today.
33:50From the right hash, it's a 35-yard attempt.
33:57And Folk's kick is good.
33:59And that will double their lead as it's up to 6.
34:03Well, looking at it from a defensive perspective,
34:05that keeps the deficit very, very manageable
34:07and all things considered,
34:08not a bad job on the defensive side.
34:10I would say that you've pointed out something pretty good
34:13right there, and that is,
34:14you actually have both sides happy with that exchange.
34:17You know, happy in courts, of course.
34:19One team, hey, we've kept it within range.
34:22The other side said, hey, we put points on the board
34:24and did stretch out the lead.
34:26Let's see how this one turns out.
34:27Yeah, still bottom line, though.
34:28Three points for the opening drive of the 3rd quarter.
34:30Now, after the field goal, Bailey will kick it away.
34:45Rodgers on the return.
34:52And he'll get it up just past the 20 as his guys will go to work at the 21-yard line.
34:58Carson Wentz in the cold offense, ready to go back to work.
35:02Yeah, maybe he's starting to wave the white flag a little bit.
35:05He's playing pretty well, but the pressure, it's got to him.
35:09Has to find a way to step around it, step through it, or just handle it.
35:14Because, as you mentioned, he's having a pretty good day overall.
35:18Just the hits keep coming.
35:19And taking those sacks, that's not the way that they want to finish a ball game
35:23with a quarterback on the ground so much.
35:25Well, he'd like to stay upright.
35:27When he's been upright, he's been pretty good.
35:29Eluding the pressure right.
35:31And he'll get this up past the 25 before he's out of bounds.
35:36Nice work to get seven out of that, and it's second down.
35:39Okay, he's not going to get the first down,
35:41but this is still a nice job of buying some time
35:44and then running to get to the sideline and get out of bounds.
35:47And avoid the big hit.
35:54On second down, it's Taylor.
35:56And he's stopped after a gain of one.
35:58Not enough.
35:59Still a yard to go on third down.
36:02Absolutely love the effort there.
36:03The ability to flow from his inside spot
36:06and stop that one of the line of scrimmage.
36:08Nice linebacker play.
36:14Again, it's Taylor.
36:15And boy, he is very close to a first down,
36:19but from where they're spotting that football,
36:21he's going to be a foot or so short.
36:23Three quarters have come and gone.
36:25You're watching the NFL on EA Sports.
36:29Back now in Foxboro.
36:32It's the Colts, so they've got the football,
36:34but they've got work to do trailing here
36:36as we begin the fourth quarter.
36:39Now on fourth down,
36:40on is the punt team sending this one away.
36:43And a fair catch called for and made
36:45just inside the 35-yard line.
36:47No return, but it goes down as just a punt of 31 yards.
36:51And the Patriots take over.
36:54Out comes the New England offense
36:55to see what they can do this time.
36:58Their defense got to stop, force the punt,
37:00and now you really start to monitor the clock
37:03as they nurse this slim lead.
37:07On first and ten, Newton.
37:11Complete.
37:11It's Henry.
37:13A good pick up there.
37:14Eight yards on the first down completion.
37:17Nice rhythm throw there on first down.
37:19He located his tight end,
37:20made it a nice easy pitch and catch.
37:22Hoping he can break a tackle or two.
37:23Wasn't able to do that there,
37:25but still good yardage.
37:26Second and two.
37:35Running out of the gun with White.
37:38And he'll be brought down
37:39right at the 45-yard line.
37:42Now I'm guessing you'd say
37:43this is kind of the key here.
37:44Grind out some yardage,
37:46work on that clock,
37:47see if you can continue to take it down.
37:49Definitely, you want to bleed things out
37:50at this point, right?
37:51Continue to possess the football,
37:53gain some yardage,
37:54and put the onus on the defense.
37:56Do they have to use timeouts?
37:57What are they going to do to stop you?
37:59You're taking charge.
38:01They fake the give.
38:02Newton.
38:03That's going to be caught.
38:05It's Jacoby Myers.
38:06And he's brought down.
38:08Well, that should be a reminder defensively,
38:11and I think it's a reminder to myself,
38:12because you just can't sell out to stop the run.
38:15There's still enough time
38:16that this offense can move the football through the air,
38:18even on first and second downs.
38:20And they obviously picked the right spot
38:22to throw the ball there.
38:23First down.
38:33Here's White.
38:34And he's dropped right at the 40.
38:37Gain of three.
38:38I'm sure that that's going to be the formula.
38:40Just keep the ball on the ground.
38:42Keep that clock moving.
38:43And when you have to lead this late in the game,
38:46above all, stay in bounds.
38:48Yes, take care of the football.
38:50Yes, gain yardage,
38:51but stay in bounds and let that clock tick.
38:5520, 20, 8.
38:57Yeah, guys.
38:58Hang on.
38:58On second down, Michelle.
39:01And the lane closes up quickly
39:02as he'll get about three down in the 38.
39:05Well, that rate,
39:06picking up three yards of carry,
39:07you and I both know that doesn't cut it in this league
39:10in trying to get first downs,
39:11unless you're playing four-down football.
39:13Then that's a whole different situation,
39:15but I don't think that's what they're trying to do here.
39:17Third and four, though, is still manageable.
39:19This a big play for both sides.
39:22What will we see here?
39:23Third and four.
39:24Back to throw, Newton.
39:29The Colts are going to get him.
39:31Down he goes.
39:33The DeForest Buckner using those big hands
39:35and getting in there and bringing him down from the side.
39:38And no matter what the situation,
39:40the O-line just hates that
39:42because they feel like they didn't protect
39:43little brother back there, right?
39:44Yeah, and that's just so difficult for them
39:46because just think about every single play.
39:49When you decide to throw the football,
39:51you're dealing with some of the best athletes on the planet.
39:54You talk about guys, if they weren't playing football,
39:56they'd be starring in the NBA at power forward.
39:58It's a really difficult task.
40:00The Patriots send out their punter
40:02as he should be able to pin him back deep here
40:05with his first punt.
40:08And that is how you do it, my friends.
40:10This will be spotted out of bounds
40:12inside the five-yard line.
40:15You need to get the ball away here in the fourth quarter
40:16while you're just holding a slim lead,
40:18but that punt, absolutely ideal.
40:21They pin him inside the five-yard line.
40:23They give their defense a really nice opportunity.
40:26Here comes the Indianapolis offense now
40:27as they get set to take over.
40:30I'll tell you what, it's kind of hard to imagine.
40:32They have not scored a single point,
40:34and yet they're in this position.
40:35A touchdown drive here, and they're in the lead.
40:37Normally, when you have zero on your side of the ledger
40:40on the scoreboard, you're a little bit discouraged.
40:42But when they look over and see their opponents,
40:44they don't see a number that's way out there.
40:46They don't see a number they can't attain.
40:48In fact, they can get it right here on this drive
40:51and potentially take the lead.
40:53Eight yards to go on second down.
41:01Wentz now to throw.
41:04This will be swung out wide for Taylor,
41:06and he takes this just about a yard shy of the 20.
41:13Fourth quarter, down to the final two minutes,
41:16and we've got a one-score game.
41:17So the Colts in possession of the football
41:29as we get your reset.
41:31They come up on a first and ten,
41:33desperately needing a score here
41:34on what could be their final drive.
41:38Meanwhile, Wentz's throw complete here to Doyle,
41:41and they're going to get this beyond the 40
41:43before he's taken down.
41:45And here we are in the fourth quarter,
41:47Parker, and we'll watch them drive
41:48for what would be a go-ahead touchdown.
41:50And you and I both know
41:51this is where you need a quarterback
41:53who can keep his cool back there,
41:55not just for himself,
41:57but to keep the rest of the team relaxed, too.
42:01Wentz to throw.
42:06Pass complete to Hines.
42:08And he goes out of bounds.
42:10It looks like right at the 50.
42:11So eight yards on the completion there,
42:14and it'll bring up a second down.
42:17And I believe the referee's been buzzed.
42:19Yeah, they want to take another look at this call,
42:21and it's certainly a big one here
42:23late in a tight game.
42:28Did he keep those feet in bounds?
42:30That's the question they've got to decide,
42:32and I've got to say,
42:33watching it in real time,
42:35it was awfully close.
42:36Yeah, it certainly looked like a heck of a catch
42:38because he didn't appear to bobble it,
42:40which could complicate things.
42:41But even with the benefit of replay,
42:44that's pretty tight.
42:45Well, here's the call.
42:54So the folks in New York just going to wind up
42:57confirming what the officials saw
42:59as this play will stand as is.
43:01And he'll take it down shy of the 45 at the 46.
43:04They're making steady progress,
43:06but I see your face.
43:07You're worried about that clock.
43:08I'm worried about the clock,
43:10and at some point,
43:10you have to have a splash play in there as well.
43:14First down now,
43:15but the clock continues to move.
43:20Back to throw.
43:22Wentz.
43:22And that is incomplete.
43:30The coverage a little too good there,
43:32and it's second down.
43:35That's certainly not the worst thing.
43:37It stops the clock
43:38and lets your offense catch its breath
43:40and lets us exhale a little bit.
43:42Now I expect them to call a couple plays in the huddle,
43:45so they're ready if a tackle happens inbounds.
43:48An incomplete pass on first down.
43:50That leads to a second and ten.
43:52And he can't get a throw-off.
43:56He's taken down.
43:58What a huge play at this point in the game.
44:16Now after the sack,
44:18Wentz and the Colts,
44:19they're left looking at the third of all.
44:20Now Wentz.
44:26And this is going to be caught,
44:27but they'll say out of bounds.
44:30So it's incomplete.
44:31So this defense,
44:32they looked a little shaky to start the drive.
44:34The bottom line,
44:35they're a play away from finishing it off.
44:37They rocked them a little bit on this drive,
44:38didn't they?
44:39But as you and I both know,
44:41it's not how you start,
44:41it's how you finish.
44:43They have a chance to end it right here.
44:44So down six,
44:46and they know they need this one on fourth down.
44:49Now Wentz,
44:50gotta have this one.
44:52Now a desperation throw,
44:53deep downfield.
44:55It's incomplete.
44:56Took a shot,
44:57couldn't come in.
44:59They had to go for it
45:01with such little time remaining.
45:03And the Patriots take over,
45:05and they're going to have terrific field position.
45:10New England trying to get to place on offense.
45:13And still two timeouts defensively,
45:15but even if they choose to use those,
45:17three kneel downs should be enough
45:19to get out of here with a victory.
45:20And that's exactly what's being stated
45:22into the head coach's headset.
45:24Oftentimes they have a guy upstairs
45:25who monitors this at the end of the game.
45:27Low clock management 101.
45:30Now the Colts going to burn
45:31the second of their timeouts
45:32as the clock will stop
45:34with 33 seconds remaining.
45:54The Patriots in the victory formation
45:57as they'll take the knee.
45:59Now the Colts will use their third
46:01and final timeout.
46:02As they'll stop it
46:03with a little over 30 ticks
46:05to go in the football game.
46:16A third down now.
46:17Those last two plays indicative
46:19of how things have gone for them.
46:20Just nowhere to go on the ground
46:22and struggling to put up points.
46:25And this one going to wrap up
46:26with Cam Newton going down to a knee.
46:30Brenton, I can just tell you
46:31from experience there's nothing
46:32like pitching a shutout on defense
46:34but even more so
46:36when it's a tight game.
46:38I mean when every defensive play
46:39is crucial
46:40and you don't give up any points
46:41boy they're going to feel awfully good
46:43about themselves after this one.
46:45Yeah exactly.
46:45The offense wasn't humming
46:47but hey all they needed was
46:49you can't score one point.
46:50All they needed was two points.
46:52You can't score two points on offense.
46:53All they needed was at least three.
46:55They got what they needed.
46:56They got what they needed.
46:57Exactly right.
46:58So this will wind up a victory
47:00for the New England Patriots.
47:02And not all W's are created equal CD.
47:04And this one came in shutout fashion.
47:06Well their offense certainly
47:07didn't need to do anything right.
47:09They could take the day off
47:10and they did.
47:11But the defense
47:12they carried them in a big way.
47:13Yeah look.
47:14The offense obviously
47:15stuffed the work on
47:16but they did enough
47:17and the defense carried the load.
47:19But you know what they say.
47:20It's always fun to work on things
47:22if it didn't go well in your game
47:24with a victory in your pocket.
47:26And that's what they've got going forward.
