00:01On the 12th of November 2024, West Yorkshire Police were called to a flat on Winrose Avenue in the Bell Isle area of Leeds by Yorkshire Ambulance Service, who reported that they were treating an unconscious man who had been stabbed with a machete.
00:15That man was Seymour T. Quashira, who was transported to hospital but died shortly after.
00:21On the 2nd of October 2025, 18-year-old Remain James of Reginald Mount was convicted of his murder following a trial at Leeds Crown Court, and on Monday the 17th of November he was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 24 years.
00:37He was also sentenced for a number of other matters, with these sentences due to run concurrently with the murder sentence.
00:44These include two years imprisonment for possession of ammunition, 12 months for possession of a machete, 2 months for handling stolen goods, and 1 month for criminal damage.
00:55The homicide and major inquiry team investigation centred on who had been in the flat with Seymour and their movements following the attack.
01:02It was established that James was part of a group of three males who went to the flat where Seymour and a friend had been staying with the woman who lived there.
01:10The group were inhaling nitrous oxide when an argument started between Seymour and James.
01:16During the fight, James stabbed Seymour to the neck and stomach.
01:20James and the other two males he was with left the address and got into a taxi which took them to the Beeston area.
01:26James was seen on CCTV holding what appeared to be a machete.
01:30Senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector James Entwistle said the incident shows the absolutely devastating impact that carrying weapons such as machetes can have.
