Set in 1920s New York City, the film follows David Shayne, a struggling playwright, whose life is transformed when a gangster, Nick Valenti, offers to fund his Broadway play. However, things get complicated when David's new cast, including Olive Neal, a self-absorbed actress, and Cheech, a wisecracking gangster, take over the production.
