05:20teddy
05:21so what part of full cooperation didn't you understand
05:27sir
05:27i heard you told nigella to leave you alone
05:30not in so many words but she was interfering with our investigation
05:34she simply wants to learn from you
05:36i promised her that you would cooperate
05:38oh i'm sure it was a misunderstanding
05:41here detected i've got something for you
05:43what is it
05:44well as best as i can reckon
05:46a full list of all who attended mr addison's retirement party
05:50mr wells provided it after you threw me out of the office
05:54you see that murdoch
05:55a bracken reed possibly somewhere down the line
05:57thank you
06:00now if you'll excuse me
06:01where are you going
06:04to the morgue sir
06:05well take nigella with you
06:06she may as well get a look at the nitty gritty
06:09i like nitty gritty
06:10so what specialised trainee do you have miss hart
06:14i have a medical degree
06:16but most of what i gleaned is from working with that man there
06:19and his wife of course
06:21oh yes the former coroner
06:23still
06:24quite the position
06:26a real achievement for
06:28a woman like yourself
06:29what have you been telling me
06:33he's killed with a small bore weapon
06:34likely a .22 calibre
06:35do you think he could be self-inflicted
06:37possible
06:38detective take a look at this
06:40if you would excuse me
06:44oh sorry
06:45yes
06:45there are traces of fabric found in the ward
06:49hmm
06:50that explains it
06:52the gun must have been wrapped in it
06:53therefore no one heard the shot
06:55especially if the party was quite raucous
06:58don't you think
06:59very good
07:01thank you
07:01well
07:02i suppose those who can't do right
07:05so what's the next step detective
07:08well in the morning i shall be interviewing all those who were present at the party
07:13in the morning
07:15yes
07:15oh
07:16that's excellent
07:17you can attend my reading tonight
07:19oh
07:21emilia turnberry
07:23and janet maloney
07:25were the dearest of friends
07:27they had known each other since childhood
07:30and grew up in harmony
07:32despite the difference in both their class
07:35and religion
07:36emilia was to the manor born
07:39or at least she carried herself as such
07:42whilst janet
07:44would never have been given the chance to rise above the station
07:48their religion permitted
07:49and it was on that cold november day
07:53that janet went missing
07:56i'm not sure how much more i want to hear of this
08:03oh don't be daft margaret
08:04it's just a work of fiction
08:05i know she's a relative but she's pretty good eh
08:08even though i say so myself
08:09she does have a keen eye for detail
08:12most women do and it's bloody annoying
08:14thomas
08:15why don't you let her sit in on your interviews
08:19do you think that's a good idea
08:22well you've just said yourself she's got a keen eye
08:25let's see what her hearing's like
08:27well if he killed himself
08:33he denied everyone else the pleasure
08:35i take it he was not well liked
08:38he was a liar
08:39he promised me a partnership
08:41i waited for him to retire
08:43thought i'd hear the magic words
08:45nothing
08:46and that made you angry
08:49uh miss nigella fletcher
08:51she's assisting me on this
08:53well miss fletcher
08:55of course that made me angry
08:57but i wouldn't kill him
08:58i don't believe anyone at the firm would have done that
09:01besides we were in the outer office
09:03celebrating his retirement
09:05did no one hear the gunshot
09:06no
09:07and you didn't see anyone go into his office
09:11we were having a party
09:12nobody was paying rapt attention to come-ins and go-ins
09:16you said no one at the firm would kill him
09:18now can you say the same for his clients
09:20mr addison had his share of enemies
09:24who were they
09:25well the last one to openly threaten him was adam burke
09:30well that is a shame
09:33trev was looking forward to retiring
09:36you were friends
09:37we were good friends before his wife died
09:40after that he became bitter
09:42unpleasant to be around
09:44i see
09:45you were overheard uttering threats
09:48no reason to lie about that
09:49my last conversation was an angry one
09:52oh what happened
09:53you're that writer aren't you
09:56nigella fletcher
09:57i am
09:58my wife was at your reading last night
10:01she said your book was a corker
10:03oh
10:03well tell her thank you for me
10:06if we could
10:07um
10:08what were you and mr addison arguing about
10:13he was representing me in a real estate deal
10:15and he cheated me
10:17how so
10:18found it after the fact he was working both sides
10:21buyer and seller
10:23oh isn't that illegal
10:24it is if it's not disclosed
10:26trevor made out like a bandit
10:28overvalued the property as well
10:31i paid much more than i should have
10:32so yes
10:34i was angry
10:35but i wasn't at the party last night
10:39and i certainly didn't kill him
10:41i take it you can confirm your whereabouts
10:44i certainly can
10:46now
10:47can i ask you
10:49when is your next novel coming out
10:53oh
10:53well it's just in the plotting stage at the moment
10:56and that's why i'm here
10:58i'm actually thinking of um setting it in
11:00into one time
11:01no
11:01i
11:01henry
11:09did a man named joanne's call in last night
11:12yes he was wondering where you were
11:14why didn't you tell me
11:15you weren't around
11:16did he say where he might be
11:18i'm not your secretary
11:20are you worried about him
11:24well
11:24he's a trusting fellow
11:26and in this city
11:27it's
11:28good reason to worry
11:29excuse me
11:31i need to talk to
11:33detective murdoch
11:34i'll take you to him
11:36and thank you henry
11:37that's right
11:37she was one step up from the dolly mob
11:42so that was mr addison's private secretary
11:45samantha leon
11:46and if that's what you want to call it go ahead
11:48he took her on shortly after his wife died two years ago
11:52why would this miss leon want to kill mr addison
11:56well he finally came to his senses and fired her
11:59she threatened to kill him
12:01seems she's made good on it
12:03why are you not interviewing miss leon
12:14we will in time but for now we are returning to the scene of the crime
12:18but why
12:19when we know who the criminal is
12:20we don't
12:22all we have is an accusation
12:23and every moment that the examination of physical evidence is delayed
12:27the more chance there is for error
12:29oh i see
12:30and i've now received new information about the crime
12:33he said he was a friend of yours
12:41so you threw him in the cells
12:43it's what's done to those found drunk and disorderly
12:45friend of the police or not
12:46are you going to charge him
12:49you should
12:50but i'll let it pass
12:52this time
12:54thank you
12:56joe wake up
13:07oh daddy
13:10oh
13:11we all right
13:14yeah yeah
13:16yeah
13:17yeah
13:17now that was a whale of a night
13:20all right let's get you out and cleaned up
13:23let's see
13:24you sure got a lot to offer
13:25i could take a big bite out of it
13:27oh
13:28looks like it bit you back
13:29let's go
13:30lady copper
13:32now i've seen everything
13:36up and out
13:37joe
13:38hold your horses
13:39do you know her
13:40i do
13:44is she taken
13:46what are you doing
13:53there is obviously blood on the desk
13:57but i'm endeavoring to find traces of it elsewhere
13:59which could point to the killer's next steps
14:02but there is nothing
14:04the painting
14:08what about it
14:11it's askew
14:12it's askew
14:13it's empty
14:22how much money was in there
14:24i don't know
14:25who else was aware of this safe's existence
14:29uh
14:30only me
14:31mr addison
14:32and the trollop
14:33have you spoken to her yet
14:34by all accounts
14:36she wasn't at the party
14:37that's true
14:38but she very well could have been in this office
14:41take a look at this
14:43now
14:47now that is clever
14:49it leads to the street
14:50mr addison had it built years ago
14:53when his wife was still alive
14:54it gave whomever he was entertaining a chance to make a hasty exit
14:59if mrs addison were ever to arrive unexpectedly
15:02ah
15:04excellent
15:06so what happens now
15:08constables will look into the backgrounds of each of the employees at mr addison's firm
15:13and then they will also compare their finger marks
15:16to those that were found on the safe
15:18and if they don't march
15:19we'll then look at the finger marks of known criminals in police database
15:23tedious work
15:25but necessary
15:27right
15:28oh
15:28where are we now
15:30miss samantha leon's current place of employment
15:32the dart and dagger
15:34oh
15:38what can i say he made promises to me he never kept of course i hated him
15:42so you weren't troubled by his death
15:44he fired me and look where i am now
15:47oh so this is his fault
15:49i used to work behind a bar and i would have never let it get to this state
15:53miss fletcher please
15:55of course it's his fault
15:56he promised to take care of me
15:59men rarely tell the truth when a lie can always get them what they want
16:04now if someone had betrayed me like mr addison betrayed you
16:08i would have done the same thing
16:11miss fletcher i must insist please
16:14sorry detective
16:16miss leon your finger marks are a match for some of those found on mr addison's private safe
16:21care to explain
16:23after he fired me i snuck into his office
16:26you do know about his secret passage
16:28i do
16:29well i used it to get all of the money he had promised me
16:32but he had changed the combination
16:33so you returned later and in a fit of rage you killed him
16:38oh it's certainly what i would have done
16:41well i am not you and unlike you i do have time for my ship to come in
16:45oh just admit it you killed him
16:47miss fletcher that is enough
16:52thank you for your time and uh
16:55my apologies
17:03i'm sorry i thought if a presto should blurt out something useful i apologize
17:08it's just so thrilling working next to you i endeavor to be better in the future
17:12but is it not true that a gambit like that works from time to time
17:17and sometimes it just serves to scare them off
17:20this is my
17:22i
17:23this is a police investigation
17:25not yours
17:28understood
17:33i had watched amelia turnberry and janet maloney for some time
17:41the two were arrogant and insufferable
17:44janet had recently rebuffed my advances and amelia mocked me relentlessly
17:51the two spent hours in the pub drinking for free of the kindness of the desperate men
17:57but i had no interest in being one of those men
18:03i wished to be god
18:12and if you would like to know what happened next this fine establishment has multiple copies of my volume
18:18available
18:21miss fletcher i've read your book numerous times oh thank you and numerous times you adopt the
18:26persona of the killer was there a reason for that uh well i think it's important as a writer
18:34to identify with all your characters um suspect victim and killer
18:42and how do you do that
18:44well it's not that hard
18:46for example have you ever imagined killing someone who's done you harm
18:51more than once
18:55oh not you dear
18:59then all you have to do is turn your imaginings into reality
19:04oh on paper of course
19:19constable roberts
19:32i need you to find out all you can about an iris and adam burke he's a real estate agent
19:39you think they're involved in murder of that lawyer they're persons of interest right away sir
19:43so murdoch how is my third cousin twice removed working out well she certainly has the bracken
19:50reed blood in her you say that like it's a bad thing
19:53miss berger how are you faring well let's just say now i've seen everything
19:58how's that a man your friend was found gambling with thinks one of the people at the table stole
20:03twenty dollars off him so a criminal in the act of committing a crime is reporting a crime against
20:08him that's about the sum of it you know sometimes i do miss the country well the country isn't all sunshine and light
20:19so she's been harassing a suspect can't say that's something we've not done yes but we are police
20:25officers she is not i have to say though it's a shame that there are no female coppers on the job
20:31a morality officer is not a copper i see and why is it a shame well if a woman is giving you the gears
20:40it wouldn't take long before you would confess to anything just to get her to turn off the tap
20:45sir it was a joke i was joking but i do admit sometimes you women see things that us men are too
20:51thick to see that's better
20:56anyway uh murdoch i want to thank you for all your efforts it won't be much longer
21:01yes you'll be leaving soon understood sir you weren't at the reading last night it was darts
21:06night at ryan's i wouldn't miss that just for someone reading a book relative or no relative
21:12detective murdoch a miss samantha leon just called she needs you
21:25oh don't worry she's not dead
21:28it's amazing the skills one can pick up when one takes a new job
21:32what happened she came in here all full of fire accused me of murder said a woman like me is a
21:39disgrace to all women i asked her to please leave me alone and when she didn't i did this
21:45ah the robbers return you had a spot of bother you all right i thought if i talked to her woman to
22:01woman well she'd reveal something well she revealed the cosh from behind the bar that's something i wish i
22:07had been aware of what i did was wrong detective and i i i sincerely apologize yes but it wasn't the
22:16first time sometimes i get carried away nigella go home margra's waiting for you well let the detective do
22:24his job
22:29so this miss leo well so she might be involved but i fear miss fletcher's actions have made her wary
22:37i'll get her off your bike so i've looked into the backgrounds of both mr and mrs brooke and nothing
22:44out of the ordinary and both can account for their whereabouts of when mr addison was killed
22:48very good thank you may i take an early lunch i'm hoping to meet a friend from back home yes of course
22:54thank you oh is young robert's fitting in quite well actually i feel he may be bound for better
23:00things it's a shame his color will hold him back
23:06well look at you what do you think pretty swish definitely swish how were you able to afford that
23:30here's the thing i woke up in the cells found there was twenty dollars in my pocket
23:36you didn't know you had twenty dollars well i did a bit of gambling with a couple fellas last night and i
23:42guess i won you guess things got a little hazy as the night one
23:50enough about my good fortune tell me a bit about that morality officer
23:55she's quite proper i doubt that she'd be interested in you no offense
24:02we'll see about that hey i thought we were having lunch sorry teddy froggy's going courting
24:12before you go sit please please
24:16so one of the men you were gambling with says someone stole twenty dollars out of their pocket oh
24:31that's a shame
24:32what about it well i just think it's funny that you found twenty dollars
24:42let me tell you teddy joe ends is a lot of things not all of them good but he ain't no thief
24:51but just because you find the method does not mean to say you found the perpetrator
25:09undetectable given time forensic evidence will reveal any method of death but just because you
25:16find the method does not mean say you found the perpetrator well that's detective murdoch's job
25:21fortunately he's very good at it you must have seen some horrible things i have last week i
25:28examined um let's keep our talk of the grotesque of the morgue shall we perhaps we could talk about
25:34the weather or well would you look at that somebody's enjoying a shopping spree and at
25:40the most expensive shop in town no less thomas makes me cover my eyes when we walk by now that
25:47woman is a suspect in mr addison's murder and apparently a very large amount of money was
25:53stolen from mr addison's firm and walking out of the most expensive shop in town you think she's
26:00a killer i certainly think it's possible oh miss fletcher um before you start tommy has spoken to me
26:15and i do realize i have been an unnecessary burden oh my book have you been enjoying it more than i
26:23thought i would yes cool what can i do for you i saw miss leon exiting madame pommery's dress shop
26:35is that right well i did wonder i mean how could she afford to shop there i'm just a concerned citizen
26:45providing the police with some information detective murdoch yes i'll be right there
27:01do you promise to stay out of my way
27:03daddy daddy decided to spend some time with your old friend what's wrong a couple of men following
27:20me men what men i don't know it might have been a couple of the fellas i was playing cards with
27:24might have you know it's a bit foggy teddy let me in please i think i'm in trouble
27:33looks like he's not the only one
27:52somebody must have followed her back from the shop and robbed her
27:57well that's one theory i suppose so but if she did kill mr addison then she got what she deserved
28:03is that from the law firm it appears to be so i was right about her all along
28:26here it is same caliber bullet that killed mr addison coincidence
28:34what do you think miss hart the more time i spend in here the less inclined i am to believe in them
28:39so she killed mr addison and then someone used the same weapon to kill her
28:45wouldn't you say so detective i would not
28:48what would you say i would say that there is something terribly convenient about all of this
28:54miss miss miss hart
29:01well detective i shall await the time you come to the same conclusion that i have you sound very
29:07certain of that it's um it's my final reading tonight will you be there i will endeavor to attend
29:16the detective your telegram from dr augen's arrived thank you paul
29:24oh
29:29right and i would like to send another please
29:34yes sir amelia was beside herself her dearest friend had been missing for over three days
29:42and the police did nothing it only strengthened her belief that the life of a young woman
29:52meant nothing to the powers that be but amelia could not accept the fact
29:59that her best friend was dead she knew she was out there somewhere suffering and at that moment
30:09amelia did something she knew the police would never do dedicate her life to finding the fiend
30:17who had killed her friend all the while afraid that she herself may be the next victim
30:34now you can rest assured that though my character holds the police in very low regard
30:41that is certainly not the case for the author
30:43i have been fortunate to have born witness to the skills and acumen of the great detective murdoch
30:58and i have been more than a simple witness in fact we are well on the way of solving a dastardly murder case
31:09in this fair city
31:17what are you doing in my home thirsty and he's got our money i ain't taking money never said you did
31:26did what rick here stole money at the poker game left it in your coat pocket by accident
31:31that doesn't make any sense i was tree sheets thought his coat was mine signed it over
31:35i can't why i spent it you little ways are you step away from your business sure is i'm a police
31:47constable you're a copper that's rich leave now or you're in trouble we'll leave when we get what we're
31:54owed strip off those glad rags okay we're getting something out of this
32:01i don't think you have a choice joe do what the man says
32:23sir what have you henry i found nothing all of the employees at addison are accounted for and none of
32:28them have ever been found guilty of any wrongdoing it may have been that secretary all alone sir
32:33don't be so sure miss fletcher i know you told me to stay out of it but i think i found something of
32:38interest thank you henry what have you found something the constable didn't then what's that
32:46well your suspicion that this was not a random robbery got me thinking now could this attack be by
32:55someone who knew that miss leon stole the money someone known to her exactly and look at this
33:06now it seems that until two years ago miss daphne potter did not exist not exist what do you mean
33:14there is no record of her existence before she became an employee at addison's firm
33:24none no there's no record of previous employment there's no birth record and nothing she is a phantom
33:31and may i come with you i very much doubt i could stop you
33:48miss potter what are you doing i'm leaving simply collecting what is mine and it appears
33:55yes some things that's our notes he was my ex-husband no one knew the two of you were divorced but you
34:08continued to work together i didn't have a choice and he paid me well why did you tell no one of this
34:17trevor had just started his firm he feared that knowledge of our divorce would hurt his career so
34:27he insisted that we keep our past relationship a secret he also told me i would be well taken care
34:34of when he retired and then samantha leon came along she certainly did and she stole his heart
34:42no my husband would have fallen for a turn of the ankle in a woman of low character
34:52for two years i watched them carrying on it was humiliating didn't he fire her oh it was a ruse
35:03i saw it as plain as day miss leon you brought disgrace to this firm you're dismissed at once
35:12the steamship tickets were all the proof that i needed he was going to leave with her and the money
35:26that money was mine i sat and watched them in humiliation for two years he was not going to give
35:35it to her she didn't steal the money did she well you know the answer to that i went to rub it in her
35:43face when i had she was having none of it so i made it look like a robbery you murdered two people two
35:57people who denied me the life that i deserve
36:11please escort miss potter to the cells
36:13you wanted to see me yes you apprehended miss potter i did oh until i started looking
36:40into miss potter's background i was convinced that miss leon was the killer but you never thought
36:46that did you well i found it difficult to believe that deposit slips would be something that mr addison
36:53kept in his private safe and that led you to believe that they were planted what about the money what we
36:58found in miss leon's home was a paltry sum over five thousand dollars was stolen and we only recovered
37:0450. hardly enough to justify murder that's a curious phrase does anything justify murder that is a
37:12question i wanted to ask you as an author please have a seat
37:20i finished your book did you like it i did i did very much and you have quite an imagination well it is
37:28a blessing and a curse sometimes i scare myself with what my mind comes up with i can imagine
37:36i mean sometimes i get taken away with my thoughts i hardly know what's real and what isn't
37:44but you you must be a very strong man to still believe in goodness after all the nasty business you've
37:51seen oh what's this it's a telegram i received from my wife i thought you might find it interesting
38:03why would i think that well as you know from my book my wife was a coroner she and i worked together
38:10to solve hundreds of murders she currently resides in england in her current position she has access to
38:19confidential information such as coroner's reports oh is that right yes and one such coroner's report
38:28looks at the murder of a felicity dowling as she was murdered in the same town that you resided in
38:39almost 20 years ago oh well i did not know they'd found her body oh you knew her i knew of her
38:49i moved away from town just after she disappeared in fact she was the inspiration for my novel
39:02i think she was much more than that
39:08since you've arrived here in toronto you have come across the bodies of two murder victims
39:13and in neither case did you show any sign of emotion
39:21perhaps i'm more like you than you would care to imagine i doubt that
39:28in this particular coroner's report the coroner goes into great detail about miss dowling's injuries it's
39:36very specific and these details were only known to the coroner and the investigating officer
39:44and somehow yourself
39:47the first cult severed her akiri's tendon this rendered her immobile
40:00i would have all the time i needed and the gag provided me with the silence i desired
40:11the second cult again was only to wound
40:19i took great pains to avoid all the major arteries
40:26i wanted her alive as long as possible
40:31so she could truly pay for what she had done in listening to you i was struck
40:41you sounded much less like someone reading and more like someone remembering
40:46you have no proof no but i do now have something that i can offer the sheffield police
40:59that they didn't have before and what's that a suspect
41:04when did you know second reading
41:18i will say i didn't do it i would expect no less
41:25but you were right about something you said earlier what was that
41:30sometimes the eyes don't lie
41:46you could have brought my bag to me you could have well instead you want to parade me around
41:51and you're naked in the oh lord
41:52everything under control constable roberts it is
42:05city treating you well mr ends
42:10i've had better times in my life cover yourself or i'll have no choice but to write you up
42:22you still think i have a chance with you too i didn't think so are you sweet on her
42:32you are aren't you okay i gotta get mates before dates but if you want my advice
42:38i don't think i'll be taking advice from the man walking down the street in his pvds
42:42and nigella admits all this she admits to being heartbroken when miss dowling announced her
42:53engagement to a man miss fletcher loved and that's motive you know thomas i never did trust her she
43:01seems sort of ghoulish so you're charging her with murder well no i can't then why is she in the
43:09the cells i'm charging her with interfering in a police investigation well that won't stick
43:14i all but told her to get involved yes but i can keep her in our cells until a detective
43:20from sheffield arrives justice will be done well that's that then i'm sorry sir oh that's all right
43:27then look but do me a favor next time i have a relative that visits please do not arrest them come
43:34come on
