00:00Hey friends, welcome to this video where we're going to dive into creating the prerequisites
00:10for the Power BI experience in Fabric, which means that we want to set up a workspace.
00:15Now, if you have already worked with Power BI and specifically with the Power BI service before,
00:20then you're probably familiar with the concept.
00:22But if not, the workspace itself is just a container for all these items,
00:26so for instance Power BI reports, but also other fabric related items we create later on.
00:31So, let's get started.
00:32For now, I'm already here on the experience side of Microsoft Fabric
00:36and what I want to do is I want to go to the Power BI experience,
00:39which I can do by either clicking on the Power BI item here
00:42or I click on the left bottom here and then I go to Power BI here.
00:46That also works.
00:48You can always go to the side, let me just go there.
00:51Now, I'm in the Power BI experience.
00:52If you click the icon and go back to Microsoft Fabric in here,
00:55then you'll land on the Fabric experience side, right on the page
00:58where you can see all the different kinds of experiences
01:00which are currently, at this point in time, available in Fabric.
01:03Now, let's go back to the Power BI experience.
01:05Let me click on Power BI one more time.
01:07And then we are inside the Power BI service.
01:10So, this is what many of you are already familiar with.
01:12So far, so good.
01:13Now, let's actually see what we have here.
01:16On the left side, there are the workspaces.
01:19And there's also always your own workspace.
01:22If I go to workspaces, which is my workspace up here.
01:24Now, this is the workspace every one of us has,
01:27but this is a workspace which should never be used in production, right?
01:30This is rather more for testing, but it's not really for production purposes,
01:33especially not in organizations.
01:35Now then, I can see here a list of all the other workspaces
01:39which I have created in the past.
01:41But if you have not created any one so far, that's fine.
01:44We simply create a new one.
01:45And to do this, I go at the bottom there to New Workspace, click this option,
01:50and then I can create a new workspace here.
01:52And first, of course, I need to give this workspace a name.
01:55So, this name is, for instance, Power BI and then in Fabric.
02:01So, in Fabric.
02:03So, that's the name I want to give.
02:05This name is available.
02:06So, there is no other workspace so far with this name.
02:08So, that's fine.
02:09And then I also can give it a description.
02:11So, be specific here.
02:12For instance, what this workspace is for.
02:14And then I can also assign a domain.
02:16Now, assigning a domain is maybe not possible for you.
02:19It depends.
02:20Because this is a setting which needs to be enabled in the tenant settings.
02:23So, an Power BI admin or Fabric admin needs to enable the setting.
02:27Only then, this will be available.
02:29And a domain itself is a kind of option to create a data mesh structure.
02:34So, it just means that, for instance, we can group certain workspaces to a domain.
02:39And this helps us to organize a workspace inside an organization, for instance.
02:43So, as an example, think of we can have an IT domain.
02:46Or we can have a finance domain where all the workspaces related to the finance department
02:50could be stored, for instance, and so on.
02:52And, as an example, I already created a domain.
02:54So, I could simply go there and then choose this domain.
02:57And then this workspace would be attached to this domain.
03:00So, that's how this works.
03:02And you also have then a domain admin, for instance, who is responsible for all the workspaces also,
03:08which are linked to the domain.
03:10So, next to the workspace admin, which is available, there's also domain admin, for instance.
03:14So, a kind of hierarchy.
03:16So, so far, so good.
03:17Now, more interesting, of course, you can add an image, but then you can also go to the advanced settings.
03:22And this is where we're going to dive in now.
03:24So, when we create the workspace, each workspace needs to be assigned to any kind of capacity.
03:29So, any kind of computer sources.
03:31So, if I go to advanced here, then I can see, of course, the contact list.
03:35And then I can see the different kinds of licenses.
03:37Now, I can also assign this license now to Pro, for instance.
03:40But this would not allow me then to create fabric items, right?
03:43So, the options for us are actually only trial.
03:46Or, if you have already bought the fabric capacity inside the Azure, or inside Azure, then you could also choose fabric capacity from here.
03:54Now, since I'm going to use the trial, which I would also recommend to you, if you get started with fabric, then I choose to try it in here.
04:01So, you can see, you've got a 60-day free trial.
04:03We can leverage all the options which fabric has, just to explore fabric and to, well, find out whether fabric works for your company or not.
04:11So, in this case, I'm going to use trial capacity.
04:14I just want to mention, there are other capacities with also Power BI users.
04:18So, if you have experience, probably already know, which is the premium per user option.
04:22Then also the premium capacity, which is related to Power BI premium.
04:26Maybe your organization has already bought that in the past.
04:28And then there's also the embedded capacity.
04:30Embedded capacity is only interesting if you want to really embed reports and make them available for third-party, so external users.
04:37For instance, you want to embed this in your website, anything like that.
04:40Then this would also be an option.
04:41So, just imagine that.
04:43Okay.
04:44Then next, I can choose the semantic model storage format.
04:47You can dive into this link if you want to learn more.
04:49For now, let's choose the large one.
04:50So, go with the bigger one and all the benefits of this.
04:53And then let's click on apply.
04:55So, this just means that we now create the workspace.
04:58Shouldn't take too long.
04:59And there it is.
05:00And now you can see we have a blank, empty workspace created, which we can now leverage in order to create Power BI items, but also fabric-related items.
05:08So, here in the workspace, just a few things.
05:12At first, regarding the access.
05:14So, a workspace as a secure folder or container also, of course, comes with different kinds of access rules.
05:21And these rules can be managed.
05:23If you go to manage access up here, and there's an option then to choose.
05:27In this case, currently, there's only one member, which is the admin.
05:30And by the way, the creator of a workspace is always the workspace admin.
05:34And I can add now other people if I go to here, add people, or I can also add groups.
05:39For instance, Azure AD groups, so security groups.
05:41So, if I go there, then I can choose here an email or a group as well, if it's created inside Azure.
05:48And then I can add them to a different kind of role.
05:51And currently, we have four roles here in Power BI service, which is admin, member, contributor, and viewer.
05:57And depending on the role, those people have different access rights and different rights to do anything inside this workspace.
06:04Now, if you want to learn more about this, I would highly encourage you to go to the Microsoft website,
06:09because there's here an overview of workspace roles.
06:12We can see exactly what an admin is allowed to do, what a member is allowed to do, a contributor, and a viewer.
06:18And by the way, this question also often comes up related to the Power BI exam, for instance, or also the Fabric exam.
06:24So keep this in mind.
06:25So, for that, let's go back to the Power BI service in here, and just close this.
06:31It was just an option I wanted to tell you what this basically is.
06:34And for the other things, creating the app, well, this is an option to share items.
06:39So, for instance, different kinds of Power BI reports inside an app, and securely to different kinds of audiences.
06:45So, target groups, this is what this is for.
06:48For now, it's not important, but I wanted to mention this.
06:50And regarding the workspace settings, let's go there as well, just to check this out.
06:55So here, one more time, we can now add here to any kind of, well, updates regarding the image, for instance, the name, the description, and so on.
07:02We can also assign it to a different domain if I want to do this.
07:04So, also, these things are not static, right?
07:06We can change them later on as well, if you want to do this.
07:09Otherwise, of course, we have the contact list here, and we can also then delete the workspace down there if we don't need it anymore.
07:15Be careful with this, of course, right?
07:17Because if it's gone, then all the items inside the workspace are also gone.
07:21But what you can do here is, at least you have a kind of retention period.
07:25Meaning, if you really deleted the workspace and you want to get it back, they have a retention period, which by default is seven days.
07:32So, this would be an option to ask or to go to your admin and ask him or her, well, could you please restore the workspace?
07:40So, but please be really careful with that, because if you really delete it, then your items are gone.
07:45So, next, the licensing info, one more time, is everything about the license itself.
07:50You can then also add Azure connections, like the storage.
07:53So, add it in like Gen2 storage here.
07:55You can configure this.
07:56So, this is linked to the workspace.
07:58This is an option.
07:59The system storage just tells you how much storage is actually, well, used by the workspace.
08:05Currently, the workspace is empty, right, because we created it, but if you have added items on stored items, for instance,
08:11like certain kinds of semantic models, then, of course, they need some space, and then you will see it here.
08:16The Git integration allows us to do version control relating to, for instance, Power BI development.
08:22So, that just means now it is possible for two or more different developers to work on the same Power BI report.
08:28And this can be done using version control either via Azure DevOps, and now also GitHub is available.
08:34The only difference is with Azure DevOps.
08:36Of course, you need an account, but the login in Azure DevOps is done by intro ID.
08:42So, completely by Microsoft.
08:43If you want to do it via GitHub, you would have to set up inside GitHub a token.
08:48And this token is then used in order to authenticate to Fabric, in this case.
08:53So, these are the two options you have to do the version control.
08:57Next, the One Lake option here.
08:59Here, what I would like to point out is the One Lake File Explorer, which is a tool you can download
09:03for free.
09:04And this allows you to have a folder locally.
09:07So, a program locally on your desktop, on your local computer, which you can see what
09:12is stored inside different kinds of workspaces.
09:14So, you basically have a kind of preview of the files.
09:18And what you basically see is the metadata.
09:20So, you do not download the files inside what's inside Fabric.
09:23This, of course, would be problematic, right?
09:25Because of the size.
09:26But you have the option to see the metadata.
09:28And also, if you double click on a file, you can also download the file.
09:31So, this is really, really nice.
09:33And you can download it from here for free, of course, and use it.
09:37So, then you can also enable caching of shortcuts here.
09:40This is currently in preview at this point of time of recording this video.
09:43But this would allow also to save probably some costs attached to shortcuts, especially
09:49if they are to a third-party service, like, for instance, Amazon S3, because then you
09:54have egress costs and so on, which might occur if you use shortcuts very often.
09:58So, then this would be an option for now.
10:00But, just skip that for now.
10:02I just want to mention that it's available.
10:04The workspace identity could be interesting because this would allow us, more specifically,
10:10the workspace, to use more or less an app.
10:13So, an option secret, so a kind of service principle, it's kind of similar to a workspace
10:18identity, but to authenticate towards Azure, for instance, as a resource, or to Azure resources.
10:23So, you do not have to use your own user account.
10:25That's the main benefit here, if you add this workspace identity.
10:28The network security, we can skip this for now.
10:31We just want to focus on one more thing, which is here, of course, Power BI.
10:34So, let's click on Power BI and just go these three things here.
10:37The general option here just means that we can allow contributors to update the app.
10:41So, this is an option that's the role.
10:44So, all the people with the role contributor have offered the option to update.
10:48So, to share the app, the new app, if it's updated.
10:51And, by the way, this here, you can enable this.
10:53And, this is related to this one here.
10:55As you can see, update an app if allowed.
10:57As you can see here, this one here can be allowed inside the workspace settings up here.
11:02Tablet app is also that very important.
11:05But, what is still important is this one here, data model settings.
11:08Because, if you enable this, then the users have the option to change the data model.
11:14So, to work on a semantic model, which has been published from the desktop, for instance, inside the service.
11:19As you can see here, this allows us, for instance, to change relationships and so on.
11:22Directly here, instead of first downloading the Power BI model, then do the change of the relationships, for instance, locally, and then re-upload it.
11:30We can save the time and do it directly inside the service, if it is enabled in here.
11:35Okay.
11:36So, this is the most important thing here in general.
11:38The other things, the embed codes, if we skip this for now, that's not that important.
11:41And, that's it basically.
11:43So, this was a tour through the workspace and all the main settings.
11:47But, now we have more or less set up the basic configuration, which we need.
11:51So, we have created a workspace.
11:53We have also enabled the fabric capacity for this workspace, which allows us to create Power BI as well as fabric related items.
12:00And, now we can get started to actually do the dive in or deep dive into Microsoft Fabric with Power BI.
12:07So, that's it for this video.
12:08Hopefully you enjoyed it.
12:09If you got questions, feel free to ask.
12:11Otherwise, thanks for watching and I'll see you in the next video.
12:13Until then, best guys.
