The National Commission of Inquiry has confirmed that “some foreign fighters” entered the city of Suwayda during the deadly August clashes that left nearly 1,900 people dead.
During a press conference in Damascus, Committee Chair Hatem Al-Nassaan stated that these individuals entered the city individually and randomly, and stressed that no foreign fighters were part of any official Syrian army unit or faction operating in Suwayda.
Al-Nassaan explained that the committee conducted extensive field visits across Suwayda, Damascus countryside, Sayyeda Zainab, Jaramana, Ashrafieh Sahnaya, Douma, and Jabal Al-Samaq—collecting over 800 testimonies.
The Ministry of Defence has ordered the arrest of any individuals who entered Suwayda in violation of military orders, promising legal action if violations are confirmed.
The clashes in Suwayda, rooted in Bedouin–Druze tensions, follow earlier sectarian violence in Syria’s coastal regions. The transitional government has pledged further investigations.
