The ‘Landman’ Cast Doesn’t Know How They Get Through Those Family Dinner Scenes Without Breaking Character

00:00How do you guys keep a straight face during those dinner scenes?

00:02It's like, it's incredible to me to see you not break down the whole time.

00:07Well, editors really help us on that.

00:08Yeah, they do.

00:09I feel so silly.

00:10Like, some of the things I say, what's the one I say in the first episode where I'm like,

00:14something about how you're Adam's apple's a soup can?

00:16I'm like, how does he would think of that?

00:19Yeah, it's, uh, there's plenty of takes where you'll catch yourself smiling or just, like, almost laughing.

00:26You're just amused.

00:27You can't help it because you're just watching this happen in front of you.

00:30So maybe it does make it, you know, maybe, you know, and then I don't really pay attention.

00:34Maybe I am smiling too much.

00:36There's something in it that it feels like they enjoy it a little bit.

00:39Yeah.

00:39Oh, yeah, absolutely.

00:40How do you keep a straight face when, you know, you have this insane stuff that's happening around you?

00:45Oftentimes we don't.

00:47And if we're lucky, the bad stuff that happens to us when, you know, Billy Bob throws off an improvised zinger or something,

00:53or a plate goes flying and nearly decapitates somebody, luckily a camera's not on us and we fall apart.

01:01Sometimes we fall apart and the director, our director here, is okay with that because it's kind of real.

01:07And sometimes we just have to stop.

01:11Yeah.

01:11And it's the crew that has to stop because they're like, come on, this is really silly stuff.

01:16But it's so much fun if you try and play it straight.

01:19You know, you do it seriously.

01:20And me and Jacob, or James Jordan and Jacob Laughlin across, we're all trying to go, what's happening?

01:27We're like being held hostage here.

01:30And if she says we're having paella, we're having paella.

01:34She says it's shepherd's paella, whatever she says.

01:39How can we eat like this every night, right?

01:41So there's an intensity to the surface that she runs, and we just have to learn to go with it.

01:46And sometimes it's easy and sometimes it's not.
