00:52:33But Piccola felt very sure Santa Claus would remember her, for her little friends had promised to send a letter up the chimney to remind him.

00:52:42Christmas Eve came at last. Piccola's mother hurried home from her work.

00:52:47They had their little supper of soup and bread, and soon it was bedtime.

00:52:52Time to get ready for Santa Claus.

00:52:53But, oh, Piccola remembered that for the first time that the children had told her she must hang up her stocking.

00:53:00And she hadn't any, and neither had her mother.

00:53:03How sad. How sad it was.

00:53:06How Santa Claus would come and perhaps be angry because he couldn't find any place to put the present.

00:53:11The poor little girl stood by the fireplace, and the big tears began to run down her cheeks.

00:53:18Just then, her mother called to her,

00:53:20Hurry, Piccola. Come to bed.

00:53:22What should she do?

00:53:24But she stopped crying and tried to think.

00:53:27And in a moment she remembered her wooden shoes, and ran off to get one of them.

00:53:30She put it close to the chimney and said to herself,

00:53:33Surely Santa Claus will know what it's there for.

00:53:38So I gave him the shoe instead.

00:53:40Then she went off happily to her bed,

00:53:42And was asleep almost as soon as she had nestled close to her mother's side.

00:53:51With one jump, she was out of the floor and running toward the chimney.

00:53:55The wooden shoe was lying where she had left it.

00:53:57But you could never, never guess what was in it.

00:54:01Piccola had not meant to wake her mother.

00:54:03But this surprise was more than any little girl could bear and yet be quiet.

00:54:08So she danced to the bed with the shoe in her hand,

00:54:10And calling, Mother, mother, look, look, see the present Santa Claus brought me.

00:54:15Her mother raised her head and looked into the shoe.

00:54:19Why, Piccola, she said, a little chimney swallow nestled in your shoe.

00:54:23What a good Santa Claus to bring you a bird.

00:54:25Good Santa Claus, dear Santa Claus, cried Piccola.

00:54:28And she kissed her mother, and kissed the bird, and kissed the shoe,

00:54:32And even through kisses of the chimney.

00:54:34She was so happy.

00:54:35When the birdling was taken out of the shoe,

00:54:37They found that he did not try to fly, only to hop about the room.

00:54:41And as they looked closer, they could see that one of his wings was hurt a little.

00:55:19She gave the cage to Piccola, and the swallows seemed to make herself quite at home at once.

00:55:24And sat on the perch, winking his bright eyes at the children.

00:55:27Rose had saved a bag of candies for Piccola,

00:55:30And then she went home at last, with the cage and her deer swallows safely inside her.

00:55:35I'm sure there was not a happier little girl in the whole country of Italy.
