00:00So I was really surprised to hear that there was an alligator in the Charles River in Boston of all places.

00:05A young alligator seen along the Charles River in Boston this week is now safe

00:10after being rescued by a local wildlife educator.

00:15Joe Kenny, the local expert who caught the gator,

00:19says he found it Wednesday night in an area where sightings of the critter had been reported.

00:24He went out to search for it as he feared New England temperatures

00:27would mean certain death for the cold-blooded reptile,

00:30which typically require warm climates, preferably temperatures of more than 80 degrees.

00:36This here is a one-year-old alligator.

00:38I rescued it last night from the Charles River in Boston.

00:43Recently, the temperatures have been dropping into the 30s,

00:47and that's really cold for an alligator.

00:49The reptile became an instant social media sensation

00:52as locals could not believe their eyes when they saw it slithering away.

00:56But Kenny thought his initial search would come up empty-handed

01:00as the critter is only a little more than a foot long.

01:03So the first thing that went through my mind was that there's no way I'm going to find it.

01:08It's a tiny little alligator in the Charles River.

01:10It's a big river.

01:11I went out there.

01:12It took me all of 10 minutes, maybe 15,

01:15walking along the edge of the area that I was last seen in,

01:18and it stuck out pretty good along the muddy bottom of the river.

01:20So it was pretty easy.

01:23I was a little shocked, though, to be honest, that I actually found it.

01:27Wildlife officials are allowing Kenny to keep the critter

01:30until they find a more suitable home for Charles.

01:33An investigation is now underway to see how the gator got loose in Boston.

01:37But they suspect it was likely an exotic pet

01:40that somebody either unintentionally let loose or purposely released.

01:45This is not the first time an alligator has shown up in Boston.

01:48Another one was spotted in the Charles River in 2010.
