Why Mixed-Species Exhibits Are Vital for Modern Zoos

See what happens when Pygmy hippos and Wolf's guenons interact in one of the world's few mixed species exhibits.

00:00Here at the San Diego Zoo

00:04we have a mixed species exhibit

00:06with pygmy hippos and wolves

00:08who went in. There are two

00:10pygmy hippos. We have a male

00:12whose name is Algon, he's six years old

00:14and a female, Francesca

00:16who is eighteen years old.

00:18The age is a little different.

00:20She's a little older, but he doesn't

00:22seem to mind.

00:24I gotta say, they have

00:26a great relationship.

00:28Most of the time, they like to sleep together.

00:30So they're either cuddled up on the beach

00:32or snuddled to each other in the pool.

00:34If they're not eating,

00:36they're sleeping.

00:40Well, we have Gwenens,

00:42two adults and two sub-adults.

00:44We have an adult male

00:46who is ten and a female

00:48who is also ten. Those two have

00:50a great relationship also.

00:52The two adult Gwenens

00:54have two kids. One is four years old,

00:56our male, Drew,

00:58and the other one is two years old,

01:00our female, Mimi.

01:02The Gwenens spend most of their day playing.

01:06The tubes that were put out there,

01:08the purpose is to kind of keep them

01:10working at their goodies.

01:12It has holes on the sides

01:14so that when we put treats in them,

01:16whether it's peanuts or raisins

01:18or even popcorn,

01:20they use the little fingers to manipulate

01:22the goodies out of there

01:24and that keeps them busy

01:26for a good part of the day.

01:28It's rewarding because they are

01:30working at it and

01:32it makes them use their mind.

01:34You will see

01:36sometimes there's interaction

01:38with the pygmy hippos and the Gwenens,

01:40especially when there's treats in the sand.

01:42They don't mind hopping up

01:44pretty quick to go get those peanuts

01:46because they'll take a chance

01:48to be around those pygmy hippos.

01:50The hippos, they don't mind too much

01:52as long as they're not eating their brows.

02:02What I enjoy about that exhibit

02:04is just the guests.

02:08They just sit there

02:10and they'll be a good hour in front of them.

02:12Just even watching the tilapia fish.

02:14Another thing that I really like

02:16about that exhibit

02:18is just how well

02:20it was designed for both species

02:22to just be themselves.
