00:00No, Portugal is not banning all Islamic practices.
00:06Viral claims on social media
00:09alleg that Portugal is banning all Islamic laws and practices
00:12and that failing to comply will result in a €4,000 fine.
00:17This post on X has been seen more than 800,000 times
00:21and has been shared and liked thousands of times too
00:24and alleges that more and more EU countries will follow suit.
00:27It attaches a video which also makes the same claims,
00:31noting that France, Italy, Sweden, Austria and Belgium
00:34are also going to implement the same measures.
00:37However, the claim that Portugal and other countries
00:40are banning all Islamic practices is wrong
00:42and appears to be an exaggeration of a recent bill
00:45to ban the wearing of face veils in public places.
00:48In mid-October, the Portuguese parliament approved a bill
00:51banning face veils worn for gender or religious reasons in public
00:55in a move seen as targeting the face coverings worn by some Muslim women.
00:59It was proposed by the far-right Jäger party
01:02and received support from the ruling centre-right PSD,
01:05the Liberal Initiative and the centre-right CDSPP.
01:09Anyone flouting the new law could face fines of between €200 and €4,000
01:14depending on the severity of the case.
01:17So the online claims clearly have some parallels to the face veils ban,
01:21but they've exaggerated and misconstrued the truth.
01:23The law will now be debated in a parliamentary committee
01:26where it may be amended before returning to the plenary for a final vote.
01:31President Marcelo Rebelo de Souza still needs to approve the law,
01:35otherwise he could veto it or send it to the Constitutional Court for review.
01:40Once fully approved, Portugal will join the likes of Austria, France, Belgium, Denmark
01:45and others in the group of European countries which have banned the burqa.
01:49But again, this doesn't mean that these countries have banned the practice of Islam.
