The Strange Dr. Weird is a radio program broadcast on Mutual from 1944 to 1945. Sponsored by Adam Hats, the drama is notable in part because it was a sister series to The Mysterious Traveler, both in theme and its narrator. Maurice Tarplin, who was also the creepy voice of The Mysterious Traveler. Many of the scripts were condensed 15-minute versions of scripts originally broadcast on The Mysterious Traveler.

00:00The Strange Dr. Weir
00:05Good evening. Come in, won't you?
00:18Well, what's the matter? You seem a bit nervous.
00:22Perhaps the cemetery outside this house has upset you.
00:26But there are things far worse than cemeteries.
00:30For instance, being lost in a wilderness.
00:33A wilderness where death is never more than a few inches away.
00:37It's in the story I want to tell you tonight.
00:39A story I call Dead Man's Paradise.
00:52My story begins in the wild and desolate swamplands near the mouth of the Mississippi River.
00:58In a small Cajun shack, all but hidden by the overhanging cypress trees, Andre Morel speaks to his son, Paul.
01:09Paul, your son has been up for an hour already.
01:13You must see to our traps.
01:15But, Father, you're ill.
01:17I don't like leaving you here alone.
01:19I'll be all right.
01:20Please, tend to the threats.
01:24Very well, Father.
01:25I'll be back just as soon as I...
01:27Take him out, Paul.
01:28Who are you?
01:29What do you want?
01:30You'll find out soon enough, old man.
01:32Duke, get that rifle of theirs over the fireplace.
01:34Okay.
01:34Well, you must be the two bank robbers the radio was warning everyone about.
01:38That's right, bright boy.
01:40Now every cop in Louisiana is looking for us.
01:42How far are we from New Orleans?
01:44Forty miles.
01:45Forty miles, huh?
01:46Well, you're taking us there in your boat.
01:47But we lent our boat to Pierre Duval.
01:50Besides, no boat can get through swamps.
01:53Hey, Ace, what are we going to do?
01:54We figured I'm sailing right through to New Orleans with no trouble at all.
01:57We'll have to make it on foot, that's all.
01:59These Cajuns know every inch of the swamp, so bright boy here will guide us.
02:03No.
02:03No, it's impossible.
02:04Well, you must.
02:05He will kill you if you do not do as he asks.
02:08That's right, kid.
02:09Your old man's talking sense.
02:10But you don't know the swamps.
02:12We must travel by narrow Indian trails through bad stretches of quicksand,
02:15where a single misstep means death.
02:17It can't be that bad.
02:19Why, on my road map, this region is listed as Paradise Swamp.
02:22Yes, but the old name, the name the Indians gave it, was Dead Man's Paradise,
02:26because no stranger who ever entered it came out alive.
02:29There's the quicksand pools of it waiting to trap strangers,
02:32and there are the insects, the mosquitoes that drive men mad.
02:36There are the birds whose shrieks sound like the screams of dying men.
02:39Ace, listen to that.
02:40That's a lot of malarkey.
02:42Bright boy here is going to guide us, and that's that.
02:44But I can't leave my father here alone.
02:47Can't you see he's ill?
02:48I don't want to leave him alone any more than you do.
02:50He might talk.
02:51So I'm going to see to it that none of us have to worry about him anymore.
02:54Well, what do you mean?
02:56Just this.
02:58Father!
03:02You've killed him.
03:03Yeah, and that's what's going to happen to you if you don't do exactly as I tell you.
03:07Now let's get started.
03:09I want to be in New Orleans by tomorrow night.
03:21We've been working for seven hours now, Ace.
03:23Ace, how far do you figure we've come?
03:25Hey, bright boy.
03:26How far have we come since this morning?
03:29Ten miles.
03:29Ten miles?
03:30Hey, that ain't bad.
03:32Ace, what's that?
03:32That's just a bird, not a ghost.
03:34Pull yourself together, Duke.
03:36You don't have to be scared of.
03:37Just trees, underbrush, and swamp pools.
03:40Yeah, yeah, I know.
03:40But everywhere you turn, everything looks the same.
03:42Yeah.
03:42If we didn't have that Cajun kid to guide us...
03:44Ace, look.
03:45The kid's trying to give us a slip.
03:46Oh, he is, is he?
03:48Melissa teaching...
03:49Ace, you hit him.
03:50Yeah, I could hardly miss him at this distance.
03:52Come on.
03:54Should have kept a closer watch on him.
03:56Might have known he'd try something like this.
03:58Ah.
03:59Well, here he is.
04:00His head's all covered with blood.
04:02He's dead, all right.
04:03Yeah.
04:04You never knew what hit him.
04:05Yeah, but Ace, what are we going to do now without the kid to guide us?
04:07And we'll just have to go on the rest of the way by ourselves.
04:09But how we find our way, every way you turn, is nothing but swamp.
04:11We can't go on without a guide.
04:12Get hold of yourself, you fool.
04:15If you lose your head, you're done for.
04:16Yeah, but Ace, what chance we...
04:17Shut up, will you?
04:18Listen to what I have to say.
04:21Now, by keeping our eyes on the sun and doing the little figuring, we can keep going in
04:24the right direction.
04:25As for the quicksand, well, we'll just have to watch our step.
04:29Just keep saying one thing to yourself.
04:31New Orleans is only 30 miles away, and we're going to make it.
04:35And now I'll continue my story, Dead Man's Paradise.
04:48Five hours have passed.
04:50Five hours of nightmare for Ace and Duke.
04:53The shadowy cypress trees and underbrush seemed to become thicker every mile they pushed on,
04:59and they were constantly forced to detour around swamp pools and lakes,
05:04ever mindful of the treacherous quicksands they must avoid.
05:09How far do you think we've been amazed since we left that Cajun kid?
05:12Yeah, about four or five miles, I guess.
05:15Now, look, the sun's going down.
05:16It'll be dark before long.
05:18What do we do now?
05:18We'll stop pretty soon and wait for dawn.
05:21The morning will push on.
05:22Neither of you will ever get out of these swamps alive.
05:27Did you hear that?
05:28Yeah, that sounded like...
05:29You have committed murder, and you must pay.
05:34Yes, it's the voice of that Cajun kid.
05:35No, no, it can't be.
05:37I knocked him off.
05:38It's the voice of his ghost, that's what it is.
05:39Ah, don't be a fool.
05:40The ones who have died in the swamps say you too must die.
05:46Hey, you see, I told you he's come back to get us.
05:48Yes, both of you will die in the quicksand.
05:54Only 20 feet ahead of you is a fool of quicksand.
05:59I see a head at this quicksand.
06:01Ah, don't be a fool, I tell you.
06:03You really think this quicksand ahead had worn us?
06:05Just a trick to get us to walk in another direction where the quicksand really is.
06:09Yes, I guess you're right.
06:11Why, sure I am.
06:12Now keep going straight ahead.
06:13Oh, okay.
06:14We've still got an hour or so until it gets too dark to travel.
06:17So, we've got to make the most of it.
06:18Yeah, yeah, Ace, but just the same thing you think...
06:20Hey, Ace!
06:22What's wrong?
06:22I stuck into some quicksand, Ace.
06:24Help me out, I'm sick.
06:24Dad!
06:25Duke, try crawling out.
06:26I can't, it keeps sinking deeper.
06:28Ace, Ace, help me out.
06:29No, if I only had a rope or something, where do I look around?
06:31No, no, it's only me.
06:32Look, how can I help you?
06:33Ace, you're sucking me down.
06:34It's already up to my chest.
06:35Give me a hand and pull me out, will you?
06:36I can't do that.
06:37You'd pull me in with you.
06:38Why, Ace, do something.
06:39There's nothing I can do without a rope.
06:41No, there must be.
06:41Hey, don't let me fall like this.
06:43Help me, will you?
06:43There's only one thing I can do for you, Duke.
06:46And this is it.
06:50Duke, he's dead.
06:54Yes, he's paid for his crime.
07:00Now it is your time.
07:02No, no, you may have gotten, Duke.
07:05But you won't get me.
07:07You won't get me.
07:11With an effort, Ace pulled himself together, determined not to suffer Duke's fate.
07:23Taking a bearing from the twilight rays of the sun, Ace continued on his way,
07:27cautiously scanning the ground before him.
07:30Time and time again, the voice of the Cajun boy came echoing through the swamps,
07:36mocking Ace's efforts to escape,
07:38telling him of the quicksand
07:40that lay waiting on every side.
07:45There's no escape for you.
07:49Just ahead of you lies quicksand.
07:54And you are going to die in it.
07:58Shut up! Shut up, you hear?
08:00The rest is waiting for you
08:02in the quicksand ahead.
08:06Baby, this will keep you quiet.
08:08You should have saved one bullet for yourself.
08:16Be quiet. Be quiet to hear. You're dead.
08:18You can't talk.
08:20You seem confused now.
08:24Is the quicksand ahead of you?
08:28To the left?
08:29To the right?
08:31If I were you, I'd turn to the left.
08:36Oh, try to outsmart me, aren't you?
08:39Well, you can't.
08:40I'm going straight ahead.
08:44You're making understand.
08:47There is quicksand just ahead.
08:50If it was, you wouldn't be telling me.
08:52I know better than...
08:53I'm caught!
08:55It is quicksand!
08:57I'm sinking!
08:58Yes!
08:59It's quicksand!
09:00And in a minute you'll sink beneath the surface.
09:03Then your crimes will be taken for.
09:05You...
09:06You're...
09:06You're not dead.
09:08You're alive.
09:09I didn't kill you.
09:10No.
09:11That bullet you fired at me only creased my scalp.
09:14Knocked me unconscious.
09:16I recovered in time to trail you.
09:18Get my revenge.
09:19Oh, don't stand there.
09:20Get me out of here.
09:21I'll confess to anything.
09:23Only get me out of here.
09:24Why should I help you?
09:26You killed my father.
09:28No!
09:29This is the same pool of quicksand that Duke died in.
09:32And now you're going to join him.
09:34No!
09:34No!
09:35You've been wandering around in circles for hours.
09:37But I knew you'd end up here.
09:39No, no.
09:40Oh, don't let me die.
09:41Don't let me die.
09:42The quicksand is up to your neck now.
09:44In a minute it will reach your mouth.
09:47And then...
09:48It'll be all over.
09:50Shame it.
09:51I...
09:51I don't want to die.
09:52No.
09:53My father didn't want to die either.
09:55But you killed him.
09:56Help me.
09:57No.
09:57You must help me.
09:59Nobody can help you now.
10:00No.
10:01Don't let me die.
10:07I'm sorry I didn't have a chance to tell you...
10:10that this is the only quicksand hole in all the swamp between here and New Orleans.
10:31If Ray had only known there was just one pool of quicksand, he might have reached New Orleans.
10:37But you see, he let his imagination run wild, envision death on all sides.
10:44No wonder he traveled in circles and ended up dead.
10:49I know another case where...
10:52Oh, you have to go now?
10:54Too bad.
10:55But perhaps you'll drop in on me again soon.
10:57I'm always home.
10:59Just look for the house on the other side of the cemetery.
11:04The house of Dr. Weir.
11:07The Oh~!
11:14The Oh !
11:15The Oh!
11:16The Oh!
11:16The Oh!
