00:00Dailene seemingly disappeared off the face of the earth.
00:14We love Dailene so much and we want her home.
00:16Carlson was last seen leaving a bar then shopping at a grocery store.
00:21At the bar, one of the men put his arm around Dailene and Dailene brushes him off.
00:26We basically have a bar full of possible suspects.
00:31He told us that he went home by himself and that he is seen on video buying a bottle of alcohol with Dailene.
00:38He is the last person to see her. That's all we have at this moment.
00:41We wanted to know where Dailene was. That was at the root of it all. Where is she?
00:52Every suspect accused of a crime has the right to remain silent.
00:56Many agree to be interrogated anyway, but they can stop the interview at any moment, making it a race against time.
01:06Justice hangs in the balance.
01:08Missing person report comes in for Dailene Carlson.
01:27The original report was by her aunt that she went to this bar and did not come home.
01:33Dailene decided that she was going to go to a local bar called Finnegan's, and she had plans to meet some friends there.
01:46Dailene's aunt and her cousin heard from her a little bit through the night.
01:49Her plan was to come home, and then Dailene never showed up.
01:52My understanding is that Dailene communicated with her family very consistently, and if Dailene said, hey, I'm going to be home, then she would come home.
02:05So the fact that she had not communicated with those folks at all, that was extremely alarming.
02:12Dailene Carlson was full of life and energy.
02:24She was from Sandpoint, Idaho, loved to explore, kind of a free spirit.
02:30She traveled to the United States with a magazine crew from city to city, trying to get subscriptions for a variety of magazines.
02:38So she was a person that was, I think, looking for her way in the world, but definitely enjoying her life.
02:47When Dailene Carlson moved to Stockton, she moved in with her aunt and her cousin.
02:53And she decided she liked the community so much that she wanted to stay, and she wanted to go to Collinshire.
02:59Dailene had never gone missing in the past.
03:01So the fact that she seemingly just disappeared off the face of the earth, it did seem exceptionally unusual.
03:10If they know anything, it doesn't matter how little it is, that if they would please come forward, contact the police department.
03:19She's a very quiet person, but once you get to know her, she's just bubbly, and she just wouldn't have hurt anybody or anything.
03:26Her cousin said that Dailene had recently broken up with a boyfriend, Jacob Evangelisti.
03:53I think Jacob had had some feelings about that.
03:57He wanted to remain in a relationship with Dailene, and Dailene did not.
04:01Part of the same kind of social network was Jason Gilley.
04:06Dailene and Jason were just friends, and Jason's home was kind of the party place.
04:12We learned that these young men were at the bar.
04:15Jason was there, and Jacob was there.
04:18And given the circumstances, that certainly caught our attention.
04:23So we want to talk to the ex-boyfriend, Jacob, because he has a reason to want to maybe get back with her, or maybe he's upset.
04:35Jacob was very willing to talk to us, and Jacob insisted that he knew nothing about Dailene's disappearance,
04:56and that he was more concerned for her than anybody was.
05:00And he seemed to be very transparent and very honest, and the sense was that he was telling us the truth.
05:06Jason told us that he was at the bar, and that he saw Dailene there, and that the two did hang out, and that they were being friendly.
05:34And as the night went on, he got a text or a call from his grandmother, who relayed that Jason's son was sick, and that Jason needed to come home.
05:46So, according to Jason, he went to the car, and he left by himself, and went straight home to take care of his son, who was ill.
05:53Jason told us that when he left, Dailene was still partying at the bar, and he had no idea what her plans were from that point on,
06:03because he went straight home and didn't see Dailene again.
06:05So, there was one camera angle in the hall near the restrooms, and in that particular angle, you're able to see that Dailene is kind of milling about with a group of men.
06:29And at one point, you see one of the men put his arm around Dailene, and Dailene kind of brushes him off and steps away.
06:41And when that person who tried to kind of bring Dailene in for a hug turns around, we're able to see that it's Jason Gilley.
06:48So, watching the video and really dissecting it in all the different angles, what we saw was, at the very end of the night, Jason left at 12 minutes after 1 a.m.
07:01and walked out of view of the camera, and then Dailene left three minutes later, also right out of view of the camera.
07:08They left not necessarily right together, but in very close proximity in time.
07:18By way of text message, we learned that Dailene's plan was to leave the bar with Jason and then go to the store and get a bottle of Jägermeister and continue the party at Jason's house.
07:45Jason said that he was not with Dailene.
07:48So, of course, the text messages caused more questions for us than we had answers to at that time.
07:55Because we had the information that they were reportedly going to go pick up a bottle of Jägermeister,
08:01we just looked at what a logical route would be from the bar to Jason's home, you know, what liquor stores were along that route.
08:09And so we visited several of those type of locations, which ultimately led us to a local grocery store that did sell alcohol at that hour.
08:17And through that visit, we were able to obtain surveillance footage of a couple of young folks buying a bottle of alcohol.
08:29And the surveillance footage was not great.
08:32But when the two went to the register, ultimately, we end up identifying Jason and Dailene.
08:44We knew that Jason was not telling us the truth simply because he told us that he went home by himself.
08:50And that he is seen on video buying a bottle of alcohol with Dailene.
08:54Okay, Jason's lying to us. Why is Jason lying to us? That's the question.
09:15Jason was not present. He actually was out of town.
09:18So we spoke with his grandmother and we specifically asked if she told Jason that he needed to come home because Jason's son was sick.
09:28And his grandmother looked at us in a kind of a puzzled way and said, no, I don't.
09:34I never did that. I don't know what you're talking about.
09:38During the search warrant at Jason's home, there were several key pieces of evidence that were located.
09:45First and foremost, we found women's underwear in Jason's bedroom, which were obviously out of place.
09:51And we also found a certain amount of marijuana in Jason's home, enough to build a case.
09:57He possessed it for sale.
09:59It was ultra clear that Jason was not being honest and that we now had enough, at least based on the possession of marijuana,
10:08to take him into custody on that and have a very direct conversation with him.
10:11So, on August 14th, Jason was located and he was arrested and was immediately taken into custody.
10:19Sorry about the wave, man.
10:32I don't know.
10:34Unlike you, you're...
10:35We keep saying we've got so much stuff.
10:37It's crazy.
10:38Well, we appreciate your cooperation, by the way.
10:49I don't know if I said that.
10:49It really helps.
10:50I mean, you know, we really...
10:52I understand it's all procedures.
10:53Yeah.
10:54No, we appreciate it.
10:54I mean, all you're doing is helping us, so...
10:56I'm upset about my room upside down, but...
10:59So...
11:00We're not worried about weed or whatever.
11:01I'm just curious, to be honest with you.
11:03What is a little sack like that?
11:04What does it cost?
11:05Uh, I've been getting $10 for one of them.
11:0710 per?
11:08Yeah.
11:09I'm not really trying to make money off of it.
11:11Just kind of smoke for three kind of thing?
11:12Yeah, pretty much.
11:13Okay, so now going back to Saturday.
11:15Uh, Saturday.
11:17It was a long, boring day.
11:20So, I think I did some yard work.
11:22I can't quite remember.
11:24You went to the bar at what time?
11:25I would say, again, 9 or 10-ish.
11:29Okay.
11:29It's about the time I show up.
11:30I wanted Jason to lock himself into a statement.
11:35If the statement was going to be absolutely the truth,
11:37that would be great.
11:38If he chose to continue to stick to his story
11:40and tell us more lies,
11:42we were going to let him do just that.
11:43Uh, I do remember playing beer pong,
11:48drinking some beer.
11:50Uh, I seen her bailing there.
11:53And I seen her, like I said, bouncing,
11:56I told you before she was bouncing around.
11:58Uh, about, I would say,
12:02a little bit before one,
12:03my grandma texted me,
12:05said, hey, how are you busy?
12:06Can you come home and take care of your son?
12:09I'm like, all right, I will.
12:10And then, what do you got?
12:11Straight home.
12:16The thing that we want most is a full confession.
12:20A very close second to that
12:21is a statement that's riddled with lies.
12:25And in that interview room,
12:27Jason continued to lie.
12:28We just want our home safe.
12:47I just want my family to, you know,
12:50have peace and my aunt get her daughter home.
12:53Everybody has their own kind of nuances
13:13as to how they speak, how they act.
13:17And I was just kind of getting a read
13:19on who Jason is
13:21and how he would generally communicate
13:23so that we could then identify
13:25behavior changes from that.
13:27And that's really what we're looking for
13:28is what that behavior change is.
13:32So what do you think about all this stuff
13:34and everything that's floating around?
13:36Honestly, I don't even know.
13:38I know it's not good.
13:40It's sad.
13:41And I don't really know thoughts on it.
13:45What do you think happened?
13:46I'm thinking she left with somebody
13:49and hopefully she's just stuck somewhere
13:52and hopefully she's all right.
13:54I don't have no idea what happened.
13:57No idea.
13:59Have you tried, since you found out
14:01she went missing,
14:01have you helped out, like,
14:03to try to find her to do anything?
14:04I was going to print out some flyers,
14:06but my printing was out of ink.
14:08Try calling her or texting her or anything?
14:10I tried calling her with the phone.
14:12Damn.
14:13Go straight to Westman.
14:15When did you try calling her?
14:17Oh, gosh, I couldn't even remember what the ad was.
14:19Well, I mean, has it been kind of repeatedly?
14:21No, I tried one time.
14:22Oh, just one?
14:23Plus everybody else,
14:23and they only had her phone's off.
14:25He was so nonchalant about,
14:27oh, yeah, I don't know.
14:28Maybe she's stuck somewhere.
14:29I hope she's okay.
14:31That doesn't make sense to me.
14:32For most adults,
14:34if something happened to one of their friends,
14:36they would do everything they could
14:37to try to help locate that person,
14:39particularly in the context of this case.
14:42Is there anything else you could think of?
14:45Anything that you could think
14:46that would help us out?
14:47I don't,
14:49I'm not one to point fingers,
14:50but Jacob was just staring her down
14:52all night long,
14:53watching her every little move.
14:55What I kind of understood,
14:58and maybe I misinterpreted,
15:00this was pretty much she broke up with him.
15:02I don't know if it was mutual
15:03or if he broke up with her
15:05or she broke up with him.
15:05I just know she was all excited
15:08about being apart from Jacob.
15:09Honestly, she was all excited.
15:11About being apart from him?
15:12She's like,
15:13I'm done with him.
15:14So glad it's over.
15:15I don't know why I see him.
15:16Right.
15:16Every time I looked at his direction,
15:18he was standing at her.
15:19Okay.
15:19He immediately went to deflecting,
15:26bringing up reasons.
15:28Oh, she was drinking.
15:29She was talking to a lot of guys.
15:31Jacob was staring at her.
15:32You know, that's the ex-boyfriend.
15:34So when people start deflecting,
15:36they're hiding something.
15:37And our goal is to know
15:39what they're hiding and why.
15:41You know, we have,
15:42here's the thing.
15:44Yeah.
15:45Yeah, same as you guys.
15:46So nothing else you can think of?
15:52Anything you want to add
15:53on the timeline?
15:55Anything you want to,
15:56you know, that you think
15:57that maybe you made a mistake
15:58when you're telling us?
16:00No.
16:03Nothing I can think of.
16:04Okay.
16:05We have a ton of resources
16:08that we use,
16:09investigative tools
16:10that we use,
16:12and there's some inconsistencies
16:15in her story.
16:16Okay.
16:19And we want you
16:20to clear this up for us.
16:21Really horrible times.
16:22Okay.
16:22That's okay.
16:23That's all right.
16:24And you can't expect us,
16:26we don't expect you
16:28to know every minute
16:29of what you did.
16:30That's not reasonable.
16:31It's not reasonable.
16:32Okay.
16:33But that's the good thing
16:34with surveillance,
16:35video surveillance
16:36at different locations,
16:38the cameras
16:39that are on the intersections,
16:41and as such.
16:42So, you know,
16:43we don't have to account
16:44for your time,
16:45but these things,
16:46they do take their time stamp.
16:48What we can see
16:49is literally the wheels
16:51begin to turn
16:51in his head, right?
16:53And him beginning
16:54to recount
16:55where might I have gone
16:56that they might have
16:58surveillance footage.
16:58So, we need you
17:03to be completely honest
17:04with us.
17:04Because we know,
17:05we know a lot more
17:07of what's going on.
17:08Right.
17:09Okay?
17:10And this is your opportunity
17:11to be completely honest
17:12with us.
17:12And we need you
17:13to be honest.
17:14Because we know,
17:15we know a lot
17:16of information.
17:18What you see
17:18is him kind of shift
17:20in his chair.
17:22And that's a classic tell
17:24of somebody who's beginning
17:26to feel very uncomfortable.
17:27Jason is beginning
17:29to connect the dots
17:31that we certainly know
17:33more than we revealed
17:34to him originally.
17:36And his body language
17:38said so much more
17:39than his words did.
17:54So, Jason,
17:56let's stop goofing around.
17:57Let's stop playing games.
17:58Okay?
17:59Because we know
18:01that there's a whole lot
18:02more to this story.
18:03And this is not the time
18:05for games.
18:05We just need you to be honest.
18:06This is a big deal.
18:09Any investigator knows
18:10if somebody is talking,
18:12you're making progress.
18:14It might be very,
18:15very slow progress.
18:17And even if he's going to lie,
18:18the fact that he's talking,
18:19if he's talking,
18:20we're on the right path.
18:22You're in a good position
18:25to help yourself right now.
18:27Okay.
18:28So let's really consider
18:30some questions
18:31and let's really consider
18:32the answers that you're giving
18:33before we go further
18:35down the road, Jason.
18:36Because I don't want you
18:37to waste this opportunity
18:39that you have right now,
18:41okay,
18:41to be honest with us.
18:42because...
18:43I'm trying to...
18:45I understand
18:46everything that I can.
18:46I mean,
18:47I understand...
18:48I don't know
18:49what you guys know
18:49or anything, but...
18:50Jason,
18:51we know a lot of stuff.
18:53Okay?
18:53And we need you to be honest.
18:55Please don't waste
18:55this opportunity.
18:56Because this is serious.
18:58Okay?
18:59So don't do that
19:00to yourself.
19:02Me leaning in
19:02and putting my hand
19:03on his forearm there
19:05is a way for me
19:06to try to connect with him
19:07because humans
19:08like that human touch.
19:10And if that need
19:11is being met
19:12in this way,
19:13then there's
19:14a higher likelihood
19:15in my experience
19:16that somebody's
19:16going to continue to talk.
19:18So let's start over.
19:20So on Saturday,
19:23okay,
19:23what time do you
19:24get to the bar?
19:25I got to the bar
19:26probably 10, 10, 15.
19:29Okay.
19:29I was there
19:30until probably 1 o'clock.
19:31Okay.
19:31And what happened at 1?
19:33At 1 o'clock,
19:34I left.
19:35Because what?
19:36Because of my son.
19:37Okay.
19:38So I went home,
19:39made sure my son
19:39was all right,
19:41and that was it.
19:41So let's talk about...
19:44Let's talk about
19:45your grandma
19:45in the text first.
19:52Because when we were
19:53out there on Thursday night,
19:54I spoke to your grandma,
19:55and I spoke to her
19:55in detail about that.
19:56Right.
19:57About your son
19:58being sick
19:58and all that,
19:59and she explained
20:00what she did
20:02or didn't do.
20:03Right.
20:04And it doesn't...
20:05It's not consistent
20:06with what you're saying.
20:08So this is your opportunity
20:10to straighten it out for us.
20:12She didn't text me.
20:13You're right.
20:14She didn't.
20:14You're right.
20:14I had just my phone.
20:18Okay.
20:18Why did you...
20:18Why did you not tell us
20:20the truth about that?
20:21Well, to the...
20:22What's the purpose of it?
20:25There is no purpose.
20:26Well, listen.
20:26People don't lie to the police
20:28for no reason, Jason.
20:29And we asked you multiple times,
20:31and you gave the same lie
20:32over and over.
20:33And, you know...
20:34Well, that...
20:35I was texting a lot.
20:37You know...
20:38Who else were you texting?
20:39I honestly could not remember
20:41who I was texting.
20:42His brain's going
20:43800 million directions,
20:45and he's trying to come up
20:46with a new strategy
20:48because he knows
20:49his whole statement is,
20:52I left to see my son.
20:53Well, that's no longer true.
20:55So now they're just going to keep
20:57chipping away at him
20:58and have him keep
20:59contradicting himself,
21:01and then hopefully each time
21:03he'll reveal a little bit more
21:04of the truth.
21:08So why did you decide
21:09to leave the bar?
21:11Because I wanted to go home
21:12to my son's.
21:12Okay, so who did you leave
21:13the bar with?
21:14Now, what?
21:14I left by myself.
21:15And where did you go?
21:17I went home.
21:18From the bar directly
21:19to your house.
21:20Didn't make any stops.
21:22Stopped nowhere.
21:24Wait a minute.
21:24Wait, wait, wait, wait.
21:25Wait, wait, wait.
21:27Excuse me, Jason.
21:28I left the bar.
21:29Okay, hold on.
21:30I left the bar
21:31with Deline
21:32to food for less.
21:35I bought a bottle of air
21:35for her,
21:36dropped her back off
21:37at the bar.
21:39And then...
21:40Now, why would you
21:42lie to us about this,
21:44Jason?
21:44I just remembered
21:45that I went to this...
21:47But that's pretty important.
21:48Jason, you did
21:49have been very detailed
21:50on everything to us.
21:51Jason, this is...
21:53No, I understand.
21:54It's not something
21:55you forget, Jason.
21:56It was just so
21:57obviously fabricated
21:58that he just happened
22:00to remember.
22:01Oh, gosh, thank you.
22:02Yeah, I forgot,
22:03but yes, now I remember.
22:04This is not something
22:05you forget.
22:06I understand.
22:09So, let's talk about this.
22:11This is serious.
22:12It slipped my mind.
22:13I'm serious.
22:14I don't think it did, Jason.
22:16As a matter of fact,
22:17I'm quite certain it didn't.
22:18Okay?
22:19There's a whole lot more
22:20to this story,
22:21and all these questions
22:22that we sat in here
22:22and asked you,
22:23we obviously knew the answer.
22:25Right.
22:26That was not
22:27a slip of the mind.
22:27That was a lie.
22:29There's a big difference.
22:30It was a lie, correct?
22:31Yeah.
22:31Why?
22:32I don't know.
22:33Scared?
22:35Of what?
22:36Because I know
22:37she disappeared
22:38around the same time.
22:41So, so why would you
22:43be scared about that, Jason?
22:50Jason clearly wasn't going
22:52to volunteer
22:53any more information,
22:55so it seemed obvious
22:56that we needed
22:57to pivot on our strategy
22:59to confront him
23:00with facts
23:01about his lies
23:03and ultimately
23:04we wanted to know
23:05where Dailene was.
23:07That was at the root
23:08of it all.
23:09Where is she?
23:11Most important
23:12is we need to get
23:13Dailene back to her family.
23:14Right.
23:15Right?
23:16So you're going
23:17to help us find her?
23:19I don't know.
23:20I'm going to do that.
23:21I'm sure you do.
23:25Jason,
23:26I'm sure you do.
23:27Okay.
23:28I'm sure you do.
23:31I'm sure you do.
23:47Why would you lie to us
23:49about having gone home
23:52by yourself?
23:53Slip my mind.
23:54I'm sorry.
23:55Okay.
23:55What else
23:55slipped your mind
23:56up until right now?
23:58What else do you want
23:58to change about your story?
24:00This is your chance.
24:02Jason,
24:02use this opportunity.
24:04Let's talk about
24:05your conversation
24:06with Dailene
24:07leading up to
24:08going to Food for Less.
24:09I had an offer.
24:13I said,
24:14do you want to come
24:14back to the house
24:15and trash on the couch?
24:17She said,
24:18okay.
24:19It's not too cool.
24:20I'll bottle you a bottle.
24:24I had changed my own plan.
24:25I had bottled the bottle
24:26still and went home.
24:28And why did you take her?
24:29I took her back to the fence.
24:31She was with me
24:32and I dropped her back
24:32off the fence
24:33all the way back
24:34to my house.
24:35So you dropped her
24:36back off in the bar?
24:37Yes.
24:38For sure.
24:39Shortly after one.
24:43Maybe left a little bit
24:44before one.
24:45Maybe right at one.
24:47Yeah, sure.
24:48What did she do
24:49when you dropped her off?
24:50She walked into the bar?
24:52That's weird.
24:53Jason,
24:54you know what's weird
24:54about that?
24:57You know what's really
24:57weird about all that?
24:59There's a s***
24:59load of people
25:00at Fens.
25:01There's cameras
25:02everywhere.
25:05Guess what they
25:05caught at Fens?
25:07After we,
25:08because we saw you guys
25:09leave together.
25:09or come back
25:11in the fence?
25:13Jason.
25:14There's no surveillance
25:15of them.
25:16And there's surveillance
25:17everywhere.
25:18We sat and we watched
25:19hours of footage.
25:20Jason.
25:24Okay.
25:25You guys went home
25:26to your house.
25:28No, no.
25:29Jason,
25:29let's quit
25:31f***ing around,
25:32Jason.
25:32I'm about f***ing
25:33done with it.
25:34Got it?
25:35I'm about f***ing done.
25:36Do I need a lawyer
25:38or something?
25:39I mean,
25:39you guys are starting to
25:40yell at me.
25:40I don't understand.
25:40Jason, listen,
25:41I apologize.
25:42I apologize.
25:43I'm sorry.
25:44I'm sorry.
25:46Yelling at him
25:47and cussing at him
25:48was not a successful
25:49strategy, right?
25:51And so it seemed
25:53very clear.
25:54I needed to apologize
25:55and I needed to back
25:56it off.
25:57And I needed to be
25:58more of that soft touch
26:00and more like,
26:01hey, it's okay.
26:02We're here.
26:03We want to help you.
26:04This is your time.
26:06And you're a good guy.
26:07Okay?
26:08So,
26:09this can,
26:10we can make this work.
26:11We can make this okay.
26:13But you gotta be honest.
26:14Starting right now.
26:17Starting right now.
26:20Should you walk
26:21towards the bar
26:21around Harvey's?
26:22Aye.
26:23For blood,
26:24for dead bodies,
26:25for...
26:29Why don't you tell us
26:30about where you
26:31and Dalene went
26:33after Food for Less,
26:34Jason?
26:34Because it wasn't
26:35to the bar.
26:36Jason?
26:37I'm really scared
26:40because I know
26:41when people are missing,
26:42they look like
26:43you guys are
26:43looking at me
26:44and the person
26:45that they're last with
26:46usually has done something.
26:47Okay, then be honest
26:48and stop lying.
26:49I'm sorry.
26:50I'm really scared.
26:52We went back to my house.
26:54We drank a little bit.
26:56Then she called
26:57and she started
26:58to walk off
26:59to go home.
27:00She,
27:01I wasn't gonna let her
27:02walk all the way home.
27:03She's been drinking a lot.
27:05So I got my grandma's car
27:07and I didn't know
27:09how much she got in.
27:11Why is it that you
27:12lied to everybody?
27:13Because I'm really...
27:14Because I know
27:15how people look
27:16when you're the last person.
27:17Like, everybody's
27:17pointing fingers at me
27:18because I didn't think
27:20she left the bar with me.
27:21Well, she did leave
27:22the bar with you,
27:22Jason.
27:23Right, but now she's missing
27:24and I don't want
27:25anything to do
27:26with her missing.
27:27Then, Jason,
27:27why would you not
27:28tell us that
27:28from the get-go?
27:29Jason,
27:30because here's the problem.
27:32I'm really scared.
27:34I'm still scared.
27:35Things happen, man.
27:36It's okay.
27:37Okay?
27:38I don't know
27:38David's missing.
27:39But, but,
27:40so let's,
27:41let's make it better.
27:43Okay?
27:45Jason,
27:45let's make it better.
27:46Let's make it better
27:47right now.
27:48Okay?
27:50Let's make it better.
27:51Do the right thing, man.
27:52You're a good guy.
27:53And I know
27:54in your heart.
27:54I don't want to let her walk.
27:55Hey.
27:55I'm a good guy.
27:56I let her walk away.
27:57In your heart,
27:58I know you want
27:58to do the right thing.
28:00I don't mind it.
28:02It's okay.
28:03I made mistakes, Jason.
28:07Do the right thing now
28:09for, for you.
28:10What am I supposed to do now?
28:11It's been seven days.
28:13The more that
28:13he becomes emotional
28:14and the more that
28:15he cries,
28:16it becomes apparent to me
28:18that these are not
28:19real tears.
28:24What we see
28:25is him
28:25beginning to get
28:26really, really worried
28:27about himself
28:28and not about Dalene.
28:30He knows
28:31that he's in serious trouble.
28:33Jason, the more you talk about it,
28:52the better you're going to feel.
28:53The better you're going to feel?
28:54Don't you feel me?
28:54You've got to feel better.
28:55You've got to feel
28:56a little better about,
29:03you know,
29:04being able to get this
29:05off your chest.
29:05You haven't been able
29:07to tell anybody.
29:13Okay.
29:14But you get it off your chest.
29:15Jason, listen,
29:15because ultimately
29:16the truth is going to come out.
29:18Ultimately.
29:19The truth will come out.
29:21Okay?
29:22And how much
29:23had you had to drink?
29:25Between the two
29:26and drink the whole bottle.
29:28Of?
29:28Of Jager.
29:29I should have gotten it.
29:30Right.
29:31Did you guys have sex?
29:32No.
29:33Jason.
29:33Jason.
29:35Jason.
29:35Jason.
29:38Why would you lie
29:39about that, Jason?
29:40Jason, stop lying.
29:42Let's, let it,
29:43hey, let it out now.
29:45It's okay, man.
29:46I'm going to walk away.
29:48Jason, that's okay, man.
29:50Okay?
29:51But you've got to
29:51stop lying.
29:53Okay?
29:53Stop lying.
29:54Is that the first time
30:00you guys had sex?
30:02Was she upset because?
30:03Because we were both drunk.
30:04It should have never happened.
30:05Well, that's okay.
30:07Was she upset because,
30:08because?
30:09I didn't think so.
30:10I didn't want to.
30:11I didn't want to.
30:12Why do you think
30:13she was upset?
30:14She was probably
30:15sobering up.
30:17We had sex
30:18and we came out
30:19for a little bit more
30:20and then she just said
30:21she wants to go home
30:22and she started walking
30:23so I got her in the corner.
30:26Was she in the front seat
30:27or the back seat?
30:29She was telling me
30:30just let her go.
30:31Just don't worry about her.
30:32Just let her go.
30:33I figured she was...
30:34Was she yelling?
30:35I figured she was upset
30:36about the sex.
30:37I figured, you know?
30:38What was she saying?
30:39She was like,
30:40I'm horrible.
30:41I can't believe I did this.
30:42You're a piece of garbage.
30:45To you?
30:45Yeah.
30:46Why was she saying
30:47about you?
30:47I don't know.
30:49Like I said.
30:49What were you saying?
30:50Nothing.
30:51I said,
30:52I'm just going to
30:52take you home.
30:53You'll be all right.
30:55And then she got out of the car
30:56and I didn't want
30:57to pursue the issue
30:58so I just,
30:59I don't know.
30:59Wait.
31:01That's what I mean.
31:02I should have just made
31:04sure to do my phone.
31:06Jason said that
31:07they drove all the way
31:09to Modesto,
31:10which is about
31:1130 minutes south.
31:12of us
31:13and that
31:14Dalene got out
31:15of the car
31:16at some unknown
31:17place
31:18and instead of
31:19alerting the authorities
31:20in that community
31:21and asking for help,
31:23he just left
31:24and went to a gas station.
31:26You were so good
31:27to try to stop her.
31:28That's what I mean.
31:28I don't know why.
31:29She got out of the car
31:30and you didn't go around
31:31to help her?
31:33No, I didn't.
31:34I really don't.
31:38That's why I didn't
31:39want to put it away.
31:40Okay.
31:41She didn't jump out
31:42of the car, Jason.
31:44Jason.
31:45Yeah, she didn't jump out.
31:47She stepped out
31:47of the car.
31:49Jason, she didn't
31:49step out of the car.
31:50She didn't just walk away,
31:51Jason, and you didn't
31:52just drive off.
31:53That doesn't make
31:54any sense, Jason.
31:55Because when you lie,
31:56it's great.
31:59Jason, she didn't
32:00get out of the car.
32:01Jason, somebody.
32:04No.
32:04Jason.
32:05Jason.
32:06I saw...
32:06Jason.
32:07Jason.
32:08Jason.
32:09No.
32:09Where are we going
32:10to find her body?
32:11Help us find her.
32:12Help us bring her home.
32:13Her family deserves it.
32:14Do you have a family?
32:15She has a family.
32:16She deserves it.
32:16I know that.
32:17She does.
32:17I don't do anything to her.
32:19Come on, Jason.
32:21Listen to me.
32:21You don't seem to understand
32:23the gravity of the situation.
32:24Okay?
32:26When Jen explains it...
32:27I don't want you...
32:30I don't...
32:31Definitely don't want you
32:31to do that.
32:33Can I have a lawyer?
32:37Okay.
32:39I'm just lying, you guys.
32:42I feel like you're making
32:43me say something
32:43that's not true.
32:44You know, we don't want
32:45to put anything on,
32:46but...
32:47It's over, so...
32:50You asked for it for me,
32:51so...
32:51We can't talk to you
32:52at all.
32:53So here's what's gonna happen,
32:53okay?
32:54You're gonna go to jail.
32:55Okay?
32:56Jason, good night.
32:58Jason asking for a lawyer
32:59and our communication
33:00having to end.
33:01with him
33:02was pretty devastating
33:03as somebody
33:04who was fielding
33:05the calls
33:06from her family
33:08every single day.
33:09I wanted to know
33:10where she was.
33:22We are looking
33:24at a nobody,
33:26no cause of death
33:27investigation.
33:29There's no evidence
33:30really of his kidnap
33:32or what we believe
33:34to be murder
33:34of Daylene Carlson.
33:36We just know
33:37that she has disappeared.
33:39He is the last person
33:40to see her.
33:41He is lying
33:42about his interactions
33:43with her,
33:44but that's all
33:46we have at this moment.
33:46Gilly was set free
33:58for lack of evidence
33:59after police arrested him
34:01soon after Carlson's
34:02disappearance.
34:03This is the only
34:04interview he's done.
34:05I really haven't
34:06known her that long
34:07and just to be accused
34:08of this,
34:08it really hurts.
34:09Carlson was last seen
34:10with Gilly
34:11leaving a bar
34:12then shopping
34:12at a grocery store.
34:13She was never
34:14seen again.
34:15I'm not that person
34:16that you all see
34:17on TV.
34:18I'm a kind person.
34:20Never,
34:20I don't push myself
34:21on anybody.
34:22Everybody that knows
34:23me knows that.
34:23It just seemed like
34:52such a perfect opportunity
34:54to have another
34:55discussion with him
34:55about Dalene's
34:57whereabouts,
34:58but clearly I was
34:59not the right person
35:00to have that
35:00discussion with him.
35:01Let's quit
35:01around, Jason.
35:03I'm about
35:03done with it.
35:05Got it?
35:05I'm about done.
35:07Introducing
35:08Detective Dela Cruz
35:09to Jason
35:10was an opportunity
35:11to see how he
35:13would respond
35:14to a female
35:15investigator.
35:16He doesn't have
35:17to talk to me.
35:18He doesn't have
35:19to be there.
35:20He wasn't under
35:21arrest here
35:22so he could really
35:24have told me
35:24to f*** off.
35:43What happens
35:44is you come across
35:45a lot of people.
35:45I do, you know,
35:47in the course
35:47of 20 years.
35:49And there's people
35:51that, you know,
35:52not empathy
35:53or, or, but I kind
35:57of fell for you,
35:58if that makes any sense.
36:00I think so.
36:01I don't know.
36:02Jason seems like
36:04the type of suspect
36:05that just needed
36:06to be coddled
36:07and just be reassured
36:09as opposed to hitting
36:10him hard
36:11and him shutting
36:12down.
36:12You seem like
36:13a nice guy.
36:14Yeah.
36:15You know,
36:15and a lot of times
36:16I know that
36:17nice people get
36:19caught up in stuff.
36:21That's what I'm afraid
36:22of.
36:23That's what I'm afraid
36:24of for you too.
36:25To be very honest
36:26with you.
36:27Yeah.
36:27Because I think
36:29you've gotten
36:30caught up in stuff
36:31and my,
36:33some,
36:33my heart feels
36:34for you.
36:34I feel bad
36:35for you.
36:36Right.
36:37I think something
36:38happened.
36:40You're not someone
36:41to actually hurt
36:43somebody.
36:43I think something
36:44bad happened.
36:45So when you watch
36:46this,
36:47he acknowledges
36:48for a minute
36:48by nodding his head.
36:49You can see that
36:50when she says
36:51something bad
36:52happened,
36:52I think you know.
36:53And he's like,
36:54yeah.
36:55And she's trying
36:56to relay to him,
36:57you can trust me.
36:58If anybody would
36:59want to help you
37:00on this department
37:00and be on your side,
37:02you got one person.
37:03Right.
37:04Okay.
37:04And I don't do
37:05that often.
37:06I understand.
37:06There's a lot
37:09of people
37:09that I've sat
37:09across the table
37:10from.
37:11Okay.
37:13And I've done
37:14some,
37:14some bad things.
37:16It does not
37:17make them a bad
37:17person.
37:18Right.
37:19By no means.
37:20Okay.
37:21I just don't
37:21really know.
37:22Nothing else
37:22that I can think
37:23of.
37:23Like,
37:23I've been thinking
37:24every day.
37:25I just,
37:25I don't really
37:26know.
37:27At that point,
37:28he just kind
37:29of,
37:29like,
37:29didn't budge.
37:30He just reminded
37:31me of someone
37:32that wanted
37:33to go ahead
37:33and tell the truth,
37:34but it wouldn't
37:35come out of his
37:35mouth.
37:36The written timeline
38:01was something
38:03that was beneficial
38:03for the case.
38:04We wanted
38:05to do
38:06an analysis
38:07of the events
38:08in Jason's
38:09writings.
38:10So when we
38:11get it on paper,
38:11there's one portion
38:12where he starts
38:14speaking about
38:15Dalene in past tense.
38:17That's not good.
38:18That means
38:18he did something.
38:19That means
38:20she's gone.
38:20The condition
38:34of the body
38:49was extremely poor
38:50so we were not
38:51able to use
38:52DNA
38:52and had to
38:53use a forensic
38:55dentist
38:55who two days
38:57later
38:57positively identified
38:58the remains
38:59as Dalene Carlson.
39:02Dalene had been
39:04shot five times
39:05and we recovered
39:07five spent
39:08.22 caliber
39:09casings
39:10close proximity
39:12to her body.
39:20To have a young
39:21gal like that
39:22that's beautiful
39:22that has a lot
39:24going for her
39:25to have her life
39:25cut short
39:26it's horrible.
39:26people.
39:32.
39:33.
39:40.
39:41.
39:46.
39:51Prosecutors say the evidence that they were able to get once Carlson's body was discovered
40:01fits in with the timeline that they already had for the sequence of events here at Gilly's house
40:06that night. What they don't have is the murder weapon. Through the course of this investigation,
40:12we learned who all of Jason's family was in this area. And through questioning Jason's uncle,
40:19we learned that Jason had an old .22 caliber semi-automatic handgun that he gave his uncle
40:27and told his uncle to put in a safe and keep for him. I asked him, when did Jason give you that gun?
40:35He said, you know, Jason gave me that gun just after that girl disappeared.
40:42We did a forensic examination of that gun in relation to the casings that were found at the scene.
40:49And through that examination, the experts were able to say that that gun that was provided to us by the uncle
40:55was the murder weapon.
40:57Our evidence for the rape charge was Jason's statement that Dalene woke up after having sex and was extremely mad at Jason.
41:21So those were the grounds I used, and I believe was the motive for the homicide.
41:27I believe that he was worried about being accused of rape, and that was more important to him than Dalene's life.
41:34The amount of agony that we went through every day, every day it was harder, every day it was not easier, it was harder and harder and harder.
41:42And I hope that he goes down. God forgive me for saying it, but I hope he does.
41:48Jason Gilley was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, which I believe was the right sentence.
42:00Jason Gilley was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, which I believe was the right sentence.
42:06Following the trial, the jurors explained that this video and this interrogation was critical in their decision making because they were able to see that his thought process and his lies were kind of the final nail in the coffin, so to speak, in his fate.
42:28He took my daughter away. Why take somebody else's life because of selfish, selfishness?
42:42My cousin got justice and she can rest now. She's been along two and a half years. She didn't deserve any of this. She had her whole life ahead of her.
42:55One of the saddest parts of this case is the fact that Daylene's life ended so, so tragically and so, so prematurely and left so many people absolutely completely devastated.
