Canada and India are working to rebuild trade ties after a two-year diplomatic freeze. Canadian Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu met his Indian counterpart Piyush Goyal in New Delhi, calling the talks “productive” and focused on sectors like clean energy, critical minerals, AI, and agriculture. Ottawa now hopes to restart trade negotiations under a new process, marking a reset in bilateral relations.

00:00Well, officially I would call it discussions early in the process.
00:16I would say it's a new process because it's a new government.
00:21And I would be very open about that because things have changed globally, right?
00:26And, you know, if you look at what's happening with India and some of the usual trading partners, a lot has shifted here as well.
00:33And so we're in a different environment, but it's important that we support each other.
00:38You know, you talk about aerospace, AI, critical minerals, energy, agriculture.
00:44There are many areas of opportunity that we've identified, especially on investments.
00:48What more can we do? And so that's the focus. That's the energy we want to send.
00:52You know, Dr. Deshankar was there in Canada yesterday.
00:57You know, Minister Anita Nanda was here a few weeks ago. I'm here now.
01:01And Minister Goyal has committed to coming to Canada.
01:05So what I see from this new government, new Prime Minister Carney, new government, new focus, new energy, new mandate,
01:12is to start afresh because things have changed from where we were two years ago.
01:17You know, you look at policies in the trade world that President Trump has made that has really shifted things dramatically.
01:24Canada is the only country in the world that has every element needed to build an electric battery.
01:30And so when you look at what we're doing in Canada with our critical mineral projects,
01:33we welcome that investment from India is what I was very clear about today is, you know, you want to secure supply chains?
01:40We have those those resources and we're ready to work with you to make sure that we're able to get those resources.
01:47And it's also about processing. Much of that processing, as you know, happens in one country, mostly in Asia.
01:53How are we going to work together to add value to that processing?
01:57Because the value is in the processing.
02:10Unfortunately, especially in the different parts of the world, nobody is in the Commission.
