Dans les années 1960, Ferrari gagne pour la cinquième année consécutive la célèbre course du Mans. En 1966, le patron de la marque se moque de la compagnie Ford, en disant que ses voitures sont hideuses et peu performantes. C'en est trop pour Henry Ford II, le patron américain, qui demande à l'ingénieur Carroll Shelby de construire une voiture capable de battre le constructeur italien. Ce dernier embauche son ami Ken Miles, un pilote émérite qui va se mettre derrière le volant de ce nouveau bolide. A cause de son caractère volcanique, Miles est constamment sur la sellette et Henry Ford commence à avoir des doutes sur leurs chances de succès...
