00:00The movie opens in Seoul, where we meet our protagonist, In Chang, a member of the military's explosives disposal team.
00:06His unit is currently dismantling unexploded ordnance found at a construction site from the Korean War.
00:12In Chang is overjoyed because today is his final day of service before he finally retires from the military.
00:18I had to say it.
00:20After the bomb is discharged, In Chang heads home, and on the way he calls to check on his pregnant wife, Choi.
00:25She has just returned from a regular checkup at a hospital and assures him that everything went well.
00:29In Chang wants to know about the baby's gender, but she refuses to tell him and asks him to come home first.
00:35Moments later, a massive earthquake strikes, and news spreads that Mount Baikdo, located near the China-North Korea border, has violently erupted.
00:42The tremors reach as far as Seoul, where the ground shakes violently and buildings begin to collapse.
00:47Countless people meet a terrible fate in the chaos, but In Chang is determined to reach his wife.
00:52He narrowly escapes the falling debris, but crashes at the last moment.
00:56He begins running away when a massive structure collapses right above him.
00:59But he miraculously manages to avoid it.
01:02He needs to know if his baby is a homie.
01:04Elsewhere, we meet a woman named Jiyeon, the senior secretary of civil affairs, who visits a man named Professor Kang.
01:10It turns out the man is a scientist who had long been predicting such an explosion.
01:14Now, after years of being mocked for his theories, he is preparing to leave South Korea and travel to the United States, where he holds citizenship.
01:21Jiyeon now asks for his help in dealing with the current disaster, but Kang refuses and tries to walk away.
01:26However, when Jiyeon brings up his shady past and threatens to have him arrested, the man has no choice but to comply.
01:33Please, don't tell anyone about the Shake Weight ads.
01:36Later, Professor Kang meets with high-ranking officials and explains that Mount Baikdo has four magma chambers beneath it.
01:42The recent eruption was just the first, and three more are expected.
01:45The final eruption could be so massive that it would devastate roughly half of the Korean peninsula.
01:51To stop the fourth explosion, Kang suggests setting off a blast in a nearby mine with the force of six nuclear warheads to relieve some of the pressure.
01:59He explains that the lava's force could be reduced by drilling a passage into the magma chamber to let it flow safely underground.
02:06But creating such a passage would require an enormous amount of energy.
02:09Upon hearing this, the high-ranking officials are horrified and refuse to proceed, fearing that if America were to find out, it could spark another war.
02:17However, later, the South Korean president privately summons Professor Kang to his office and urges him to go ahead with the mission, even if the chances of success are slim.
02:26The plan involves ignoring the U.S. denuclearization efforts, entering North Korean territory, and detonating a nuclear device near the Chinese border.
02:34After some time, In Chang receives a call from the colonel, who assigns him the task of going to North Korea for bomb disposal.
02:40He initially refuses, since he's already retired.
02:42But the colonel reminds him that the mission concerns the future of their nation, and offers to secure his wife a spot on the U.S. military transport plane for evacuation.
02:50In Chang reluctantly agrees, on the condition that his baby is a boy, and returns home to tell his wife that he has been called for another mission.
02:58He doesn't reveal that it's in North Korea, so she won't get worried.
03:00In Chang asks again about their baby's gender, but she just asks him to come back early, so he can meet their child in person.
03:07The next day, In Chang and his team meet with the officials and learn that North Korea still possesses six long-range nuclear missiles that have not been dismantled.
03:14The plan divides the team into two groups.
03:16In Chang's team will dismantle the missile, and a separate special operations unit will handle the rest of the operation, including transport and detonation.
03:24They also learn about a North Korean informant, Jun Pyong, who knows the missile's location, but is now imprisoned in his country.
03:31Fortunately, South Korea has implanted him with a GPS tracker, so the team must free him, secure the uranium, and set the bomb to detonate inside the mines.
03:39In the next scene, the plan finally goes into action, and the two teams take off in a transport plane.
03:44However, a large amount of volcanic ash fills the air, and soon, the transport plane carrying the Special Forces team breaks down.
03:51In Chang's unit is also about to crash, so all of them parachute into North Korea.
03:55Upon landing safely, they are shocked to realize that the Special Forces team did not survive, which means it's now up to In Chang's squad to carry out the entire mission.
04:04With no other choice, In Chang leads his team, and they soon arrive at the prison where Jun Pyong is held, and discover that a riot has broken out due to the earthquake.
04:12Fortunately, the prisoners have already killed all the guards, allowing the group to reach Jun Pyong without resistance.
04:18They explain the mission to him, but Jun Pyong mocks them, saying that they're just novices with no combat skills.
04:24Despite this, the team needs his help, so they free him and keep him in handcuffs, so that he won't escape.
04:29Next, they let him take a shower and clean up a bit.
04:31Good luck scrubbing butt with them cuffs.
04:33And during this, we notice that Jun Pyong has stolen In Chang's wallet.
04:36He notices the ultrasound picture of the child there, and also a map of the mines.
04:40The cunning man quickly memorizes the map, after which, he tears it up and eats it.
04:45Next, the team moves forward, and soon passes a collapsed statue of North Korea's leader.
04:49Jun Pyong feels bad, and says he used to look at the statue every day from his apartment before he was imprisoned.
04:54Soon, In Chang realizes that his wallet is missing, so Jun Pyong hands it back, and says that he ate the maps, but has memorized them as insurance.
05:01This enrages a young soldier, who angrily throws a punch at the cunning man, before being restrained by his colleagues.
05:07Regardless, the group continues moving forward, and Jun Pyong soon needs to stop, for he will soon pee long.
05:13He is let outside, while being monitored by the man who attacked him earlier.
05:16During this, Jun Pyong somehow manages to unlock his handcuffs, and attacks the man before running away.
05:22Soon, the rest of the team arrives, and is horrified to see their comrade unconscious, while Jun Pyong is run away after leaving the GPS behind.
05:28Frustrated, the group returns to the city to find him, and In Chang soon notices the fallen statue of North Korea's leader.
05:34He recalls how Jun Pyong said it was a nice view from his apartment, and spots a nearby building, where he must be.
05:40Elsewhere, we see that Jun Pyong has indeed returned home, where he changes his clothes and gathers his hidden guns.
05:46He finds his wife high on drugs, and asks her where their daughter is.
05:49She responds that she is at her brother's place in Pocheon, which is near Mount Baikdo.
05:54Jun Pyong then asks if it was she who ratted him out to the authorities, which she confirms.
05:59Enraged, he fires a shot in the air, which is soon heard by In Chang and his team outside.
06:03They quickly arrive at the apartment, and find Jun Pyong pointing a gun at his wife.
06:07In the end, the man cannot bring himself to kill her, and is detained by In Chang's team.
06:12Following this, In Chang views him as a traitor, and doesn't allow him to participate in the strategy meeting.
06:17But Jun Pyong finds his lack of planning experience laughable.
06:20He then eventually leads the team to the nuclear weapons storage site.
06:23There, North Korean soldiers lie in wait at a military base hidden beneath a camouflaged factory.
06:28But the team bravely fights, and manages to subdue them.
06:30They then approach a container, and inside it, they find an elevator.
06:34After Jun Pyong inputs the password, they descend miles underground to reach the nuclear warheads.
06:39They secure Jun Pyong to a railing, put on their specialized suits, and start dismantling the missiles.
06:44But once the uranium is secured in their custom detonator, a second earthquake strikes, and the ground begins to shake violently.
06:50Amid the chaos, Jun Pyong manages to escape on his own, and contacts its Chinese associate,
06:56who offers him and his daughter refuge in the country, in exchange for a bomb.
06:59However, the associate also insists he bring a technician, who can disarm the detonator.
07:04This leaves Jun Pyong with no choice, but to return to where Captain In Chang and his team are trapped, and help them.
07:09Back in Seoul, Choi feels the tremors of the earthquake, and quickly packs to head for the military base.
07:14She soon gets stuck in traffic on a bridge, where a massive tsunami hits, causing her to be swept into the water.
07:20But, she manages to swim through the current, and eventually reaches safety.
07:23Meanwhile, Professor Kang meets with Jian, and reveals that their initial eruption estimates were wrong.
07:28The large iron ore deposit in the seventh mine is accelerating the eruption,
07:32and he suggests targeting a weak point there, to prevent the final, catastrophic explosion.
07:37Back in North Korea, In Chang and his team are about to leave, when all of a sudden,
07:40they are attacked by unfamiliar people, who open fire relentlessly.
07:44Amid the chaos, they realize the attackers are using heat detection,
07:47so In Chang blows up a truck, and sets it on fire, to mask their heat signatures, and tries to escape.
07:53They are soon shocked, to discover that it is actually the US military attacking them.
07:58Several soldiers are injured, and In Chang and Jun Pyong are separated from the rest of the group.
08:02As the two men get in a military vehicle to flee, Jun Pyong shockingly betrays In Chang, by tasing him.
08:08Meanwhile, in South Korea, the US military shuts down the mission,
08:12as crossing borders and stealing nuclear weapons has violated the peace treaty, and could trigger a war.
08:17Professor Kang thus decides to leave, while Jian tries to persuade him to stay,
08:21knowing that if he abandons the operation, South Korea will face serious danger.
08:25However, Kang insists there's nothing he can do, and ultimately departs.
08:29Later, Kang boards a bus to the evacuation base, where he meets Choi along the way.
08:33She is crying, so he comforts her, and gives her a handkerchief.
08:36Fortunately, he never used that one, back when he was predicting his own little Mount Pyong would erupt.
08:41They talk for a while, and he learns that she is In Chang's wife,
08:44and is hoping her husband will meet her at the evacuation point.
08:47This makes Kang feel bad, but he doesn't say anything to her, about her husband's mission.
08:51On the other hand, we see that Jun Pyong is handcuffed In Chang,
08:54and plans to take him and the bomb to hand over to the Chinese.
08:57He reveals that they are heading to Pocheon, near Mount Baikdo, where his daughter's son Ok is.
09:02At one point, Jun Pyong stops the vehicle to relieve himself,
09:05and during this time, In Chang manages to break free from his handcuffs.
09:08When Jun Pyong tries to restrain him again, In Chang quickly swallows the GPS,
09:12and declares that now, his team will be able to track him wherever he goes.
09:16This enrages Jun Pyong, and the two get into an intense fight.
09:19Amidst their struggle, the military vehicle crashes into a tree, and becomes immobile.
09:24In the desperate situation, In Chang begins to cry, saying that he may never return to his wife alive,
09:29and might never see his child, or know if he should name it In Wang.
09:33Jun Pyong, who is also a father, is moved by his words, and decides to continue the rest of their journey on foot.
09:39The two carry the detonator and start walking, talking casually along the way.
09:43In Chang admits that he doesn't even know his baby's gender,
09:46so Jun Pyong points out that it's visible in the ultrasound picture.
09:49Better not have been, he says.
09:51A son of mine's packing a micro.
09:53Desperate, In Chang asks him what it is, but the cunning man refuses to reveal it.
09:57Jun Pyong then asks about the ending of a South Korean series called Damo,
10:00which he couldn't watch while imprisoned.
10:02He offers to reveal the baby's gender, if In Chang reveals the ending,
10:06but the latter also refuses to tell him.
10:08Why?
10:09Not long after, the two are attacked by the US military, and a gunfight breaks out.
10:13It seems like it's all over for the duo,
10:15but at the last moment, In Chang's surviving team members arrive by bus and come to their aid.
10:19They all get on board, and an intense car chase with the US military ensues.
10:23The group struggles against the highly maneuverable Jeeps,
10:26but a third explosion occurs on the bridge,
10:28sending the US forces plummeting into the valley and averting the immediate crisis.
10:32Meanwhile, in South Korea, panic spreads among the people after the latest earthquake.
10:36Choi and Professor Kang arrive at the evacuation point,
10:39where a ship will take them to the US.
10:41Kang is granted access due to his US citizenship, but Choi is left behind.
10:45The professor tries to help her, but she refuses, since she is waiting for her husband anyway.
10:50This makes Kang feel guilty, so he finally tells her that her husband is in North Korea,
10:54which horrifies her.
10:55Determined to do something, he makes one last attempt,
10:58and calls Jian to come up with a better plan to tackle the final eruption.
11:01Elsewhere, Junpyong is still determined to carry out his plan,
11:04and points his gun at In Chang.
11:06But seeing that In Chang still believes in the mission, and is determined to succeed,
11:10Junpyong finally gives up.
11:12He tells them the location of the mine, and sets off alone to find his daughter,
11:15leaving the bomb behind.
11:17Meanwhile, the South Korean military has been cut off from communication with the team
11:21since the US intervention.
11:22They decide to defy US orders, and seize the equipment needed to contact In Chang in North Korea.
11:27Jian then meets with Professor Kang and Choi,
11:29and together, they finally manage to contact In Chang.
11:32The professor immediately asks him to change his course,
11:35and instead head to Tunnel 7 instead of Tunnel 9.
11:37This leaves In Chang in a dire situation, because he doesn't have the original map,
11:41and must find Junpyong again.
11:43Elsewhere, Junpyong finally reaches Pocheon, and finally finds his daughter,
11:47who is in a dire state.
11:49She is traumatized from everything she has endured,
11:51and worst of all, doesn't even recognize him.
11:54This overwhelms Junpyong with emotion,
11:56and he begins to cry just as the Chinese associates arrive, demanding the bomb.
12:00Junpyong reveals that he doesn't have it,
12:02and pleads with them to at least let his daughter cross the border.
12:05But this only enrages the Chinese, who immediately shoot him.
12:09But before they can hurt any further, suddenly, the US military also arrives,
12:13and intense gunfire ensues between them.
12:15Amid the chaos, In Chang suddenly appears like a hero,
12:18holding a white cloth as a sign of surrender.
12:20He then reveals that he has the bomb,
12:22but shockingly shows them that the timer on the bomb has already been set.
12:26He explains that he timed it to coincide with the fourth explosion,
12:29as everything will end then anyway.
12:31Terrified, both the Americans and the Chinese finally run away from there in fear
12:35to avoid the explosion.
12:37Following this, In Chang decides to go to the mine alone,
12:39and urges everyone else to leave immediately.
12:41However, Junpyong refuses to give him the location,
12:44insisting that he will go along with him.
12:46The rest of the team leaves with Sun Auk,
12:48who sheds tears as she watches her father depart.
12:51Before heading to the tunnel, In Chang calls his wife,
12:53who is worried sick about him.
12:55He apologizes for lying to her,
12:56and she asks him not to be late so he can meet their baby in person.
13:00In Chang promises her and tearfully ends the call.
13:02Choi, equally distraught, suddenly begins having contractions,
13:06even though she is still not due.
13:07This panics Professor Kang and Jian,
13:09who rush her to the hospital.
13:10After much struggle,
13:11the two men finally reach the correct tunnel
13:13and make their way through the mine.
13:14They need to take the elevator down to the tunnel and set the detonator,
13:18but the lift stops working due to a power outage
13:20caused by a volcanic earthquake.
13:22In Chang decides to cut the cable and descend with the bomb,
13:24ready to risk his life in the line of duty.
13:27He then finally tells Jun Pyeong the ending of Damo,
13:29in which everyone dies.
13:32Jun Pyeong is stunned to hear this,
13:34but reveals that his claim of knowing the baby's gender
13:36was just a bluff.
13:38He then tells In Chang to stay alive
13:40and find out his child's gender in person.
13:42In a shocking turn,
13:43Jun Pyeong suddenly steps onto the lift
13:45and closes the door,
13:46choosing to descend alone.
13:48In Chang tries to stop him,
13:49but Jun Pyeong shows that he's badly hurt
13:51and claims no one will miss him in any way.
13:53He only pleads with In Chang to take care of his daughter,
13:56since he's the only person he trusts.
13:58With that,
13:58Jun Pyeong says his final goodbye
14:00and uses the last of his strength
14:02to carry the bomb to its destination.
14:04Next,
14:04In Chang is left distraught
14:05as he drives away from Mount Baik-du,
14:07and moments later,
14:08the uranium bomb detonates.
14:10While Jun Pyeong is killed in the blast,
14:12the explosion successfully stops the earthquakes,
14:14saving countless lives across the Korean peninsula.
14:17Choi, on the other hand,
14:18safely gives birth in a hospital.
14:20The scene then cuts to a year later,
14:22where North and South Korea work together
14:23to oversee the reconstruction of the peninsula.
14:26Professor Kang returns to Korea from the US
14:28and is greeted by Jian at the airport.
14:30It turns out that he has finally decided
14:32to settle in his homeland
14:33and is tasked with promoting
14:34a renewable energy project
14:36using magma from Mount Baik-du.
14:37Meanwhile,
14:38at In Chang's home,
14:39we see the couple living happily
14:41with their toddler
14:41and their adopted daughter,
14:43Sun Ok.
14:44And we will never discover the baby's gender.
