Stricter curbs imposed as toxic air looms over Indian capital

Air quality levels in New Delhi remained dangerously high on Thursday morning with PM 2.5 levels being recorded as high as 423 in parts of the Indian capital.

"It is really very surprising that there is so much pollution in the morning... the government should definitely take some measures to tackle pollution," said Ashish, a local resident who only provided his first name.

The Delhi government has imposed a ban on non-essential construction work among other measures to deal with the rising pollution levels.

Each winter, cold, heavy air traps construction dust, vehicle emissions and smoke from farm fires across New Delhi and surrounding districts, leaving many of the city's millions of residents grappling with respiratory problems.
